Across from her desk in the front room for their Warren homes, Arturo blinked lazily. “No hi for dad?” Burt winced and Benny snickered. “Hi, dad. Um.” Benny tilted her head encouragingly. Burt shot a look at her that clearly meant ‘Shut up I’m nervous.’ ‘Not my fault.’ Benny’s shrug conveyed. Burt sighed forcefully and opened his mouth. “You two are dating.” Aleta said it bluntly. A fact, not a question. Arturo nodded sagely. Burt blanched. “I told Beat and Bander not to tell you!” Benny narrowed her eyes. “Oh come on, you knew I was going to tell them now.” Burt snapped defensively. “Burt, look at me.” Arturo prompted, now standing closer. “You were nervous, and you two did the eye-thing.” “The what?” “Means we communicated with just looks.” Burt turned to Benny, surprised. “You knew what that meant?” She shrugged loosely. “Listen, the point is, Burt, that we know. The eye-thing’s kinda a dead give away anyways.” Aleta added as Arturo sat and snuggled up against her. “Welp, that was easy. I’m gonna go get a salad.” Burt watched, betrayed, as Benny strolled freely out of the room. “Burt.” Arturo was serious now. “She loves you. Really. Don’t screw it up this time.” “That’s harsh.” Burt snapped. “But it’s true. You don’t have a good history with relationships. Ours was effortless, yours won’t be. Not because of you, or her, but the times have changed really fast. Chaos and all that. All I’m saying is to be careful” Burt snorted. “Yeah. Sure.” Aleta’s eyebrow rose. “Thanks, dad.” Burt said begrudgingly, starting to stalk out of the room. Once Burt had left and closed the door, they waited. When neither tundra could hear him in the tunnel outside, Aleta turned on Arturo. “He’s right, jerk.” “I know, I heard it as I said it.” Arturo flinched when Aleta smacked him lightly. “Apologize next time! I have to agree with you, he’s screwed things up in the past, but he loves her just as much as she loves him.” Arturo nodded ruefully. “I just hope nothing happens to them.” ------
