The guardian snapped around whip fast as Marmara gently closed the door. “Are you nuts!” She hissed. “It’s mid-day! There’s a Guard meeting! I have a meeting in less than thirty minutes!” Leena only nodded along. “Uh huh, I know, you fop.” Aloha’s eyes widened, clearly in disbelief. Then she settled - with some effort - and she sat at her desk. Leena took the only other seat, leaving Marmara to stand. Aloha looked at Maramara. Leena watched Marmara squint ever-so-slightly at Aloha, and then she sighed subtly. She probably thought Aloha was Nature at first, disappointed at her Wind status. Or something. Leena didn’t care either way. “Oh! Yeah, Aloha, meet Marmara. New buddy of mine!” Leena clapped her claws together, wings shifting in excitement. Aloha looked away from Marmara, whose expression soured as Leena talked. “Marmara, say hi!” “Hello.” “You can do better than that!” Marmara clicked her tongue in exasperation. Leena pretended not to notice. “Hello, Aloha.” “Greetings, Marmara. Leena, who is she?” “My new budd-” “You said that.” Leena crossed her arms, pouting. “Don’t interrupt me. She’s my soldier. You know. My first effort for the cause?” Aloha blinked as Leena tilted her head in askance. “Aloha, I’m asking you where your efforts for our cause are? I see no new rebels here.” Aloha’s eyes narrowed sharply as she wrung her claws, wings flattening. “You can’t expect instant results!” “It’s been a month.” Leena said, baring her teeth in a sharp smile. “I am quickly losing faith in you. And you have seen what my recruit and I are capable of already.” Aloha swallowed, remembering the discovery of Robo's grisly end. “Maybe I don’t need you…” Leena pondered suddenly, summoning a small orb of water and moving it around in the air with her claw. Aloha swallowed roughly, thinking of what Leena had told her was her favorite method of disposal. A quick strike through the head. “I. Am. Working. On it. I am a public figure. I can not move as quickly as you. And your subordinate-” Marmara narrowed her eyes. Leena did nothing. “-May be strong, but she’s in debt to you.” Leena’s eyebrow ridge rose. “How?” Aloha rolled her eyes. “You aren’t persuasive without force, and she is clearly strong enough to at least present a mild threat, so she must have a debt keeping her from walking away.” Leena crushed the orb of water she held, the liquid splashing across the room. Aloha blinked, clearly annoyed as drops sprayed across her face. Leena grinned. Satisfied that she’d made her point, she whooped. “Fair enough! Hurry up though, I need a big force for my plan. You know that!” “I do. Get out, it’s almost time for the Coliseum Heads to meet.” Leena hopped off her chair. “Yes yes, I know. Come on, Marmara.” Marmara followed obediently. Good. Leena whistled the whole way back to the mountain. Gray ash blew through the air. Soon, that ash would include Pnhkah, if she had her way. He’d blanched with everyone else as Medusa informed them Robo had died, but his excitement persisted through the grim news. “Hey, Benny!” He ran - a short distance since she had only just walked by him - to catch up to her. They began finding their way through the throng of Coliseum dragons as they prepared for an afternoon Game. Benny sighed as they pushed into a quieter corridor. “You okay?” Burt asked tentatively. He wasn’t the best of the triplets at comforting. That honor went to Bander, and if she wasn’t busy he’d most likely foist this conversation to her. It made him feel guilty. Benny shook her head in response to his question. “No. I’m not. Robo was the one who pushed for me to get this position. He was my mentor. It’s going to be hard not having him to go to anymore.” Ouch. Burt winced. That was a lot heavier than he was qualified for. “Are… Do you still want to go on the date?” Selfishly, he hoped she would say yes. Benny shrugged, her swarm of little yellow fireflies swirling with the movement. “I’m not sure. How about we just have a quiet lunch at that salad place nearby? I’ve got some paperwork to get back to at my house afterwards anyways.” Burt wilted, but nodded. “Alright.” They made it almost out of a side-exit of the Coliseum when he stopped, an idea striking him. “Benny?” Benny looked at him, and he winced at the pained expression she turned to him. Burt shook off the sudden knot of fear in his gut. “How about you go straight home?” Benny tilted her head, confusion etching itself into the pain she displayed. “But you were so excited for this…” Burt nodded, brimming with confidence at the opportunity to prove himself a good partner. “Yeah! And there’s more days for more dates. I’ll get your order with mine, and I can bring it to you, and you can decide if you want me to stay or not after that.” Benny blinked. “Huh. I… That’d be very nice. Please.” Burt nodded and bravely bumped against her shoulder, wincing when one of the spikes on her armor dug into his fur. “Go have a rest.” Benny smiled warmly. “Thanks, Burt.” ---------- Team: Dual, Baine, and Aloha. The rate at which dragons grew up, or grew old, or if they grew at all was determined by magic as so many things were. Magic is affected by emotions. Maelstrom grew up in Sanctuary with their mother and the Lab with their father. From the day they hatched they were engaged with the hobbies of their parents. Cipher had been curled around their egg reading out a lab report, and Tempo had been sketching the two of them. Above all else, they loved music. Their passion for music was discovered almost as soon as they could breathe, starting with imitating the synchronized ‘aw’s of their parents, and quickly - with help from Tempo - leading into piano. From there, Maelstrom’s need to master more complex instruments, combined with their passion for music, led to them growing quickly. They were still young in mind, of course, but they stood almost at the same height as their parents within a month of their hatch-date. It usually led to some interesting conversations with other dragons. None could top Protocol’s reaction to them already being bigger than her, but it was still interesting nonetheless. The family of three Guardians was out at the Pnhkah Farms, a collection of plateaus in the same mountain range as the Crescent Volcano, linked by bridges made of either stone or wood. It was early morning. Cipher was taking a rest before the day, as Protocol had promoted him to the new position of Lab Department Head. It was tiring, thankless work, but Protocol couldn’t handle all of the branches alone anymore and it was the least he could do. “Maelstrom?” Maelstrom looked up from their journal, closing the cover on the beginnings of a song. “What’s up?” Cipher sighed. “Do you mind your name?” Maelstrom tilted their head as their face twisted in confusion. “No? That’s a weird question, dad.” Cipher rolled his eyes and glanced at Tempo, who was arguing with one of the farmers about the prices of… probably flowers for dyes or something. “Well, we almost named you Maestro. Are you sure your Charge isn’t music? Because you already have your journal open again.” Maelstrom flushed a deeper pink, embarrassed. They had indeed opened it again. “Well,” they said defensively. “We shouldn't’ve gone somewhere with this many wind chimes. It’s your fault I’m inspired by where we are.” Of the many plateaus, Tempo, Cipher, and Maelstrom had gone to one of the ones undergoing construction. With Pnhkah experiencing a boom in population, the farms had to be modified to fit. This one in particular was actually a dye and decorative plant farm, which is why the family was there at all. Tempo had run out of a specific kind of paint that was harder to make with the stale ingredients she had in storage than she had time for. With a new set of commissions on the way, her personal projects needed to be finished quickly to open space in her studio. There were fields of flowers and ponds dotted around the small plateau - small compared to its closest neighbor, one of the artificial lakes - and one orchard which was where they were. Tied to the branches were various wind-chimes, ranging from simple one-pipe wooden ones with a bead in the middle to complex metal ornaments. They created a nice cacophony of sound in the morning air that Maelstrom thoroughly enjoyed. Maelstrom kept watching the arrangement of various pipes until Cipher bumped them lightly. “Well, excuse me.” Maelstrom glared at Cipher. He continued undeterred. “We want to make sure you experience as much as you can.” “So I can get a Charge?” “So you can have experience. It’s invaluable. And maybe you’ll find your Charge somewhere. Might even be here. Maybe it’ll take a lot longer. It doesn’t matter to me, and it shouldn’t matter to you.” “Hm.” Maelstrom looked at the freshly-dried note at the end of the line, before closing the journal with a snap. They looked up at the sunrise, just reaching the yellow stages that would shortly fade to blue. Tempo plopped down next to them with a huff, Cipher greeting her. “Hey, Tempo. Finished arguing?” Tempo snorted, waving a contract in the air. “It’s called haggling, jerk. But yeah, I got a sweet deal for the rest of the year, I just have to help paint some of the windchimes.” Maelstrom clicked their tongue curiously. “Mom, why do they have the windchimes anyways? And why is painting them enough to get dyes for free?” “Paints, not dyes, little maestro. And I do still pay a little.” Tempo pointed towards a wind chime hanging from a thick branch on the closest dye-tree. The red swirls depicting a cloud in a white sky were bright against the green leaves, making it easy to spot. “I actually asked while I was haggling. Apparently some of them are actually engraved with ruins on the inside. To protect against the heat for the plants that can’t endure it. They’re expensive as all get out, but the Head Farmer-” “Bladetail? Duoarch too now, right?” Cipher interrupted, earning a vicious glare from Maelstrom. “Sorry!” “Yeah. Bladetail wants to keep the farms open to the public. They’re the biggest green patch for ages around the territory. Sure Sanctuary’s got one with the luminescent plants, but they’re underground so they don’t count.” Tempo tapped the grass thoughtfully. “So aside from sounding and looking nice, the extras are to help disguise which have the runes and which don’t. The academy charges fees to the farms for replacing them. Usually they in turn get discounts on the stuff they need.” Cipher nodded along with Maelstrom as Tempo finished her explanation. The three of them continued to discuss the maintained gardens around them until Cipher had to go to work, leaving Tempo to design and Maelstrom to think about what he’d said before Tempo joined them. They knew they’d remember it for a long time, how lucky they were. ========== Athanor was not a quiet place in the slightest. Even before the official placement of Dual as Forgemaster on the Council, Athanor was the central hub for all metalwork in the entire kingdom. They provided nearly everything that could be made from metal, from jewelry to the industrial strength chains used in the Coliseum gates. Thankfully, Kyx thought. I’m nearly there. Kyx was coming to Athanor for help, but nothing in the way of forging. He was friends with Dual, and was coming to seek his advice. Kyx had to pick a day when he knew Dual had paperwork, regretfully. However, the trade off was the relative silence of the meeting room-combo-office Dual had. He’d need it to discuss what he’d been asked to do. Knocking on the door, he waited for Dual to let him in. The fae was busy, and Kyx wouldn’t be the one to activate his ‘got-interrupted-during-work-so-angry’ mode. “Come in!” Kyx huffed. Good, he didn’t sound annoyed. Pushing the door open, Kyx jolted when he saw Dual talking to his grandkid. “Bander! What are you doing here?” “Working.” Kyx shrugged, Arturo had introduced him to his kids as grandpa, but he knew that was a weird title to hold when they also knew about Darkling. He didn’t expect warmth. “Hey, Kyx!” Bander turned back to her bag as her mentor of the day took over. Kyx walked forward and took the only chair unoccupied by a dragon or project in the room, across from Dua’s desk. “Hey!” “Why’re you here?” “Got an odd offer, have a minute?” Dual considered. “Probably. This is mostly artistic stuff, nothing structure-critical or I’d have to turn you away.” Kyx winced in sympathy at the pile of papers Dual gently brushed aside, and the much larger stack behind it. “So! How’s life?” “Odd, I said.” Dual pulled a face, impressive when half of it was perpetually hidden by the hat, and it was done with his fins since Fae often lacked the correct facial muscles to use the common routes. “Okay, sure. Let’s jump right into it then. What’s up?” “Medusa offered me my oldest position back. I want to know if you think I should take it.” “You mean-” “You’re going to be the new Guard Second?” Bander piped up from where she was checking her supplies. Kyx stared at her, running their interactions through his memories before giving up. “Sorry, why are you here, Bander?” Bander pulled an even more impressive face, realizing she’d interrupted the conversation. “Uh…” Dual rescued her pretty quickly, much to her relief. “She’s Sol’s apprentice. Sol has to take care of the dragon who nearly lost a limb in the last Game, so he sent her in his stead.” Kyx dipped his head, and so did Bander, touched by the respect. “You must be one good healer already, if Sol’s sent you instead. Athanor’s not an easy appointment for any healer.” Bander nodded, thinking of the burns even Fire-born dragons had come to her with. Experienced or not, Forgeworkers could barely handle the heat of the largest furnaces without runes upon runes of protection. “Thanks gramps.” Kyx stuck out his tongue as if he’d tasted something sour. “Oh, ew. None of that, please. I’m not nearly that old.” Bander laughed, nodding again. “Thanks, I gotta go check around though.” Dual took the opportunity of Bander trotting out on her rounds to push up his hat. Kyx was one of few dragons used to looking into his eyes. The raw Fire magic pouring from them unsettled most. Something seemed wrong about looking into a core example of an element. “Kyx, are you sure you’ll be able to handle being in the Guard again? Medusa’s a lot stricter than Tanecho, from what I’ve heard.” Kyx punched the smaller dragon across the table, causing Dual to fumble with his hat for a second. “Hey!” Kyx grinned. “It’s more a matter if they can handle me.” He said with a claw to his lips, as if confiding a secret to Dual. Dual’s fins flattened in mock-frustration, re-attaching his hat to its clamps. “Either way, don’t shut yourself off, yeah? Talk to someone if it gets too much. Trace or Darkling, if not me.” Kyx nodded. “Of course.” Dual returned the gesture. “Good, now get moving, that paperwork won’t do itself.” Kyx laughed as Dual shooed him out, chest a little lighter with his decision made. Her mind was fried by the rune the other wildclaw had used, making it hard to think. “I hope you take comfort in that. Light dragons have always been a great ally in our fight against Plague. What with the elemental advantage, and all.” “You are the worst dragon I’ve ever met.” “Well.” Marmara said. Yes, that was the name of the wildclaw who had hit her with the Lightning runestone right after signing Kyx’s reinstatement. “That’s a pity.” Medusa felt her heart give out. She had expected it to, but it still scared her. Marmara leaned in as Medusa’s vision darkened. “Since I’ll be the last one you meet.” Medusa’s only hope was that Kyx wouldn’t be too startled when he was the Captain instead of the Second-in-Command. ---------- Team: Dual, Bander, and Medusa Important Events: Medusa fell in round 3/25 to a lightning bolt.

Because you already have your journal open again.”

Maelstrom flushed a deeper pink, embarrassed. They had indeed opened it again. “Well,” they said defensively. “We shouldn't’ve gone somewhere with this many wind chimes. It’s your fault I’m inspired by where we are.”

Of the many plateaus, Tempo, Cipher, and Maelstrom had gone to one of the ones undergoing construction.

It doesn’t matter to me, and it shouldn’t matter to you.”

“Hm.” Maelstrom looked at the freshly-dried note at the end of the line, before closing the journal with a snap. But yeah, I got a sweet deal for the rest of the year, I just have to help paint some of the windchimes.”

Maelstrom clicked their tongue curiously. “Sorry!”

“Yeah.

Athanor was not a quiet place in the slightest.

44455582_350.png

45925838_350.png
76681084_350.png

What’s up?”

“Medusa offered me my oldest position back. I want to know if you think I should take it.” “You mean-”

“You’re going to be the new Guard Second?” Bander piped up from where she was checking her supplies. Kyx stared at her, running their interactions through his memories before giving up. “Sorry, why are you here, Bander?” Bander pulled an even more impressive face, realizing she’d interrupted the conversation. “Uh…”

Dual rescued her pretty quickly, much to her relief. “She’s Sol’s apprentice. Sol has to take care of the dragon who nearly lost a limb in the last Game, so he sent her in his stead.”

Kyx dipped his head, and so did Bander, touched by the respect. “Thanks gramps.”

Kyx stuck out his tongue as if he’d tasted something sour. “Oh, ew. None of that, please. I’m not nearly that old.” Bander laughed, nodding again. “Thanks, I gotta go check around though.”

Dual took the opportunity of Bander trotting out on her rounds to push up his hat. Kyx was one of few dragons used to looking into his eyes. The raw Fire magic pouring from them unsettled most. Something seemed wrong about looking into a core example of an element. “Kyx, are you sure you’ll be able to handle being in the Guard again? Medusa’s a lot stricter than Tanecho, from what I’ve heard.”

Kyx punched the smaller dragon across the table, causing Dual to fumble with his hat for a second.

“You know,” Medusa heard her attacker say. “If I hadn’t already died once, your threats would have made me scared.” Medusa tried to stand up and failed, crashing against the stone floor of her office. Her mind was fried by the rune the other wildclaw had used, making it hard to think. “I hope you take comfort in that. Light dragons have always been a great ally in our fight against Plague. What with the elemental advantage, and all.”

“You are the worst dragon I’ve ever met.” “Well.” Marmara said. “Since I’ll be the last one you meet.”

Medusa’s only hope was that Kyx wouldn’t be too startled when he was the Captain instead of the Second-in-Command.
Team: Dual, Bander, and Medusa
Important Events: Medusa fell in round 3/25 to a lightning bolt. Run cancelled.
Medusa’s item is Battered Book of Fables.

I kept typing their instead of she in the first sentence with Maelstrom by accident, and honestly it fits them better. So now they’re they/them and Cipher will eviscerate on sight misgenderers. (:

Dual is so unlucky, third time in a row he’s been put on the coli team with a high level. Instead of him like I thought would happen if a death did, Medusa died. ):<

Medusa is not up for adoption. Transferred to Dreaming tab.
(I got her from an exalt rescue years ago. I’m way too attached now to ever consider sending her back so she goes to my Dreaming tab instead.)

Glad to see Marmara is being her wonderfully evil self!

Also, the scene with the family on the farmland was so cute!!!

Despite this the most they’ve turned up is the species, one of which we already knew, and the other is a wildclaw.” Iraulie groaned, leaning back into her chair. “Flamecaller’s spit, so we have nothing good to tell the people.” “Nope.” Bladetail shrugged. “Most we can do is reactionary damage control, and propaganda. Maybe we can use a tournament?” She turned to stare at Aloha, who had been oddly quiet. It was a valid state for her to be in, all of the successful assassinations - Diamonds, Robo and Medusa - had been murdered in the walls of her establishment. “Or is that too transparent, Aloha?” Aloha jolted, surprised at the pointed question. “Ah, no, Head Farmer. Aggression needs a focus and I’d rather it not be me. Or any of you.” She added on as if it wasn’t a second-thought. They all knew it was, Flareline in particular snorting. “Great.” Flareline interjected. “Now, I have to heal life-threatening wounds because the first instinct this Council seems to have is fighting will solve everything.” “Flareline…” Iraulie sighed for the umpteenth time that meeting. “Okay, that’s a valid concern. Make it a casual tournament that everyone can participate in, tell Shade no beasts over the size of a large Mirror, okay?” Aloha nodded. “Monarch, I should like to leave early. To start the organization and ensure it runs smoothly.” She added at Waterpearl’s side-eye. “Aloha, that’s the fifth meeting this week you’ve left early. Is everything okay?” Dual asked diplomatically. Aloha nodded, bowing slightly as she got up to leave. “It is fine, merely that the Coliseum has been busy with the unrest. I am eager to help, as always, but my position demands attention elsewhere, as always.” Dual waved at her as she left after Iraulie nodded assent. “You know, there’s not much else we have left to discuss. You’re all dismissed.” Iraulie nodded upwards, and the meeting disbanded, the Council each running off to their jobs as quickly as they could. The news of an assassin had reached the public, and it was chaos everywhere. They all needed a break that they wouldn’t be getting anytime soon, it seemed. I see a lot of new faces. I wish this were a happier occasion, but as laws state, I currently have the role of Captain. I do not want it.” Tanecho nodded to Kyx beside him, who grinned carefully back. “Kyx will be taking up the position instead.” Kyx stepped forward, pausing as Tanecho rubbed his shoulder encouragingly. “You’ll do great.” “Thanks, man.” Tanecho left, only waving at Crusher as he passed by. Kyx took a deep breath. “Medusa intended me to be your new Second-in-Command. None of us could’ve predicted her death. She was a strong dragon, and she seemed invincible. Her memory is stronger still, but I hope it won’t stop you from accepting me as your new Captain instead.” Kyx pulled out a roll of paper. “I know many of you see me as a failure Guard, but Medusa merely preferred Diamonds’ ways over mine. Either way, deal with it. I’ll do my best to listen, but my priority is the safety of the kingdom, and I can not spend my time as a diplomat with my own people. Or rather, not hear. “I have a list of choices Medusa had been considering alongside me to be the next Second-in-Command. I took my time, and a few of you have talked to me recently since I also asked for opinions on the matter.” Kyx unrolled the paper. “Out of the list, Crusher was the best choice. I know, it will seem like I’m favoring him because of his father, but his dedication and loyalty to his role, as well as his vast experience, including his visit to the Refuge in Nature, has swayed my decision. Crusher?” Crusher made his way down, getting a few sneers from those who didn’t believe Kyx’s words about the lack of favoritism. “I won’t go easy on you, Crusher. Not now, not years down the line.” Crusher nodded, swallowing his joy at achieving the position to remain serious. “Thank you, K-” Crusher paused, looking at the sea of mixed emotions in the seats around them. “So.” Iraulie sighed. “We have no clear idea of where either of the assassins are, or if they’re even actually working together.”

The rest of the Council nodded, all too aware of the empty seat between Radine and Forestcloud. “Unfortunately, yes.” Forestcloud pulled up a journal already thick with notes. “The Guards are at a near-riot with Medusa’s death, so they’ve had a lot of motivation to investigate. Despite this the most they’ve turned up is the species, one of which we already knew, and the other is a wildclaw.” Iraulie groaned, leaning back into her chair. “Flamecaller’s spit, so we have nothing good to tell the people.”

“Nope.” Bladetail shrugged. “Or is that too transparent, Aloha?”

Aloha jolted, surprised at the pointed question. “Ah, no, Head Farmer. Aggression needs a focus and I’d rather it not be me. Or any of you.” She added on as if it wasn’t a second-thought. They all knew it was, Flareline in particular snorting. “Great.” Flareline interjected. “Now, I have to heal life-threatening wounds because the first instinct this Council seems to have is fighting will solve everything.”
