joke aside, I got started in a similar fashion: I hatched an egg for funsies and liked the result, so I kept her. then I ran into some G1s for sale and decided to get those, and then I got more, and more. All I need is to move to either earth or light to complete my transformation /j

i don't really remember how i got into collecting g1's, but i do remember looking at a lot of g1 lairs and going huh. i wanna do that. after being on the site for nine years i wanted to have a new challenge to keep me going, and. well. here we are. i started collecting g1's in 2021 and now i'm essentially a purely g1 lair, with some old sentimental g2+ permas in my hidben just chilling.

look yeah... the blank offspring and parent list is nice don't get me wrong, but i definitely enjoy them because they are a blank canvas. i still regene g2+ dragons regardless of their genes, it kind of just depends what i come across and when

Hatching gen1's to me is like opening blind boxes. You get that thrill of "what will I get?"
Having been on this site for so long, a lot of dragons that are for sale tend to fall into similar colors schemes. Which there's nothing wrong with that. My lair is mostly G2+. I'm also someone who will breed gen1 dragons (for me it's fun to find two dragons that can produce pleasing offspring). But I like playing in the scrying workshop with a gen1 seeing if I can make three random colors work. Now that we have more genes that introduce additional colors, there's so much potential to create something unique!

Gosh, I think I started collecting Gen1s around the same time I joined? I remember being super into Ridgebacks & that got me into a more organized lair. Eventually that expanded on Gen1s as I preferred the bio to be "clean" and not as messy as a bred Dragons.
I also like the idea of having more "pure" Dragons and Lineages (not overbred 10 gens). If I wanted to bred a pair of Gens1 I can simply call them "Gen2" which is far more appealing, at least to me specifically.
The excitement of hatching an egg yourself and giving a XXY/XYX is so exciting! I've hatched a handful of my XXY/XYX & have far more pride over those than anything else. Having a projects of an ugly Gen1 & scatter-scrolling it & my gambling addiction (over 50k gems in that project lol)
To me a GEN1 shows commitment towards said Dragon. Because you have to make it work rather it's by scatter-scrolling it or spending time in the Scry to make whatever first born colors there are (which can be... more difficult than you'd expect)
My theme I usually go for Darker colors & Earthy tones. I don't mind more "pop of color" in them every now and then.

i started collecting them as a way to limit myself—there's too many possibilities otherwise!
This is what's responsible for my G1 collection. While I do enjoy having a fun project, I can do that with any generation of dragon (and have). However, there are so many beautiful dragons and so many wonderful colors that I had to impose a rule on myself that I cannot buy randomgen dragons anymore, that they had to be G1s. And when that failed, I then restricted myself to a particular aesthetic/color range as well, so we'll see how that goes.

i will fully admit that sagako was the catalyst for my love of g1s. only reason she exists is so that she can rep one of my favorite UMAs. hell i changed her breed and genes, and i can safely say she is my darling.

i legit have three g1s in my tf2 fandragon tab and i'm specifically featuring the demoman here because he's an absolute blemish to my wallet, as i had to spend 400g for his obelisk scroll and i still need to get him sarcophagus [emoji=bogsneak deadpan size=1]. he's going to the pain train station in train town.
(the other two are the engi and the sniper, incase you were wondering.)

and my most recent addition, armeria. he came from a post asking about a "white king" and he was the little [DATA EXPUNGED] that came out from the ice egg. got him for free, now he's the red prince o7

I'm a mixed lair. The majority of my projects are G1s though!

hwhdhdjdbdjddb JOIN ME IN GEN1 HELL. Mixed lair (4 gen 2+ dragons that I need to get rid of and like 50+ g1 projects but I’m looking to become a pure g1 lair soon) but I just love g1s and watching my wallet cry :)

I'm a mixed lair, but I'm slowly amassing new g1s over time. for me, the fun of g1s is taking a weird jank fodder combo and making it into something fantastic. like, I would never have said "you know what I need? a twilight/sable/fire dragon" and if one showed up in my fodder tab, I'd probably exalt without a second thought. but when I saw him as a g1, I decided to give him a scry, and now he's one of my favorites.
of course, you can do this with any kind of weird jank fodder, not just g1s (and I often do! that's why my lair is full of g+ projects and fodder rescues!) but out of sheer habit I'm more likely to scry and see the potential in g1s.
Big, BIG same. I used to not care, but byuing cheap g1s and making them cool just feels... so satisfying.
