TOPIC | Anybody else into needlefelting?
1 2
I've been into needlefelting for a few years now and sold a few pieces and i'm wondering is anybody else into this fiber art? I finished this piece about 2 months back and i'm getting ready to start a new one. It's a Ranchu goldfish in a lotus set into an up cycled japanese teapot. i love to felt things into vessels i find at my towns local dumpsite or at goodwill. I specialise in realistic animals mostly. Horses, goats, insects ectera. Fish are some of my favorite because they can be mounted into vessels easily for freeform and flowing pieces.

@Sorel

That looks really beautiful! I appreciate needle felting, I've even dabbled in it, but I'm not at that skill level yet!

Hey! I've needlefelted a bit (only 2D) and can say it's actually really calming and stress-free. Highly recommend it to those who have never done it.

Yess! I was taught how to do it at a furry convention! I don't do a lot of it right now, as I cycle through my artistic media and I'm into watercolor and digital art right now haha. But I wanna get back into it.

@Hiros I dont have that many pictures of my work on this computer but heres a few :3 Another fish, this time a betta in an upcycled pot And a unicorn with a poseable armature and pinned flowers that can be repositioned. And heres a turnaround of another betta fish in a pot, this time in needlefelted java fern https://youtube.com/shorts/CpcZ6bjFQDo?feature=share I cant recommend Serafina Fiber art more if your in to learning needle felting and want to try realism. When i first started i ordered a bag of undyed wool batting off ebay and some cheap industrial felting needles off amazon. I started out by just making 3d shapes with the wool. Just simple stuff like stars, spheres, cubes etc. Getting a feel for how much you can felt the wool and what it requires to make a neat surface. Many people start out with kits you can order online and while it's nice that they come with most of what you need to get started i never reccomend them to beginners because the results you get from them hardly ever look like the pictures and can be discouraging. Needlefelting, to me at least, is way less like sewing or knitting or cross stich and way more like sculpting (3d) and painting (2d). There is no real pattern to follow in 3d needle felting and kits often treat it like a paint by numbers experience when it requires a certain amount of familiarity with the materials and techniques to get a result like what the kit shows as a final product. It's like buying a crafting kit that comes with modeling clay and the instructions are like 'just make these shapes and ta-da you sculpted an owl!' and when you look at yours it's all lumpy and misshapen. If anybody out there wants to get into it i'd be glad to answer any questions and point you to any equipment I use :D I really love the art form and could talk about it all day <3

Wow your stuff is gorgeous! I think needlefelting is really cool, but I don't think I could do it myself hahaha. It seems to be a craft you need to have a lot of patience for.

I tried needlefelting once, but I poked myself so much with the needle that my hand went kinda numb for a few hours, which kinda discouraged me from trying to do it more... so now I just have this box full of different colours of felt sitting in my room :')

oh my god, I'd definitely keep something like that pretty unicorn in a center display, it's so elegant and lovely. I may have binge watched videos from the channel you linked and I think needlefelting really isn't for me, but it's so satisfying to watch others building them up anyway, I might have found a new comfort watch here
