TOPIC | New Forum Section: Polls
A cursory forum search revealed multiple posts suggesting polls in the past...but seemingly all in the context of people hoping to influence staff / site direction.

Instead, given we now have quick links to share scrys, dragons, outfits—and the steady percentage of "which scry / outfit" posts cluttering the "dragon share"—I propose a new forum section specifically for polls with an actual polling functionality.

I honestly can't think of a downside. Indecisive people like me are likely to see more feeback cause people like voting in polls. Plus, a standardized format is likely to be more immediately engaging than the diverse and sometimes rambling nature of help-me-pick posts. I also feel like it fills a lacking niche for more passive / anonymous engagement. Not to mention it'd be a nice way for shy people to dip their feet into the forums with zero risk—while simultanously feeling valued, connected, and helpful. By clicking one button to vote users immediately get visual feedback that their opinion matters becase the meter goes up. They're also interacting with strangers in a way where they can't really get hurt. And silly as it sounds, since life can be tough, the fact that you could easily contribute to solving someone's dilemma (however trivial) would feel good.

As for how it might work I'm split. Either way I imagine you'd start by putting up to say...5 dragons / scrys / outfits, then choosing a duration. But whether polls should be another option on the bar that has text formatting, image linking, and emojis (i.e. you'd insert polls into posts)—or whether polls should be their own post type restricted to the poll forum I'm not sure. I do kind of like the idea of polls being image only with an optional (character-limited) description but that's not really necessary.

Regardless, duration-wise I was thinking maybe same times as listings on the AH? Say 1-7 days? Or actually no...we should definitely get some instant gratification in there so 5-10 min and 1-3 hr options would be good.

Finally, I was thinking it'd be nice if the poll posts could be color coded. Say blue for active poll, orange for over / discussion only.

P.S.—Please do not ping me. If you love the idea? Awesome. Hate it? Cool. I don't work for FR so yelling at me does...zilch. Am curious to see some alternative implementation / optimization ideas though!

Rather than a forum section, why not a post type? I'm interested in seeing Discussion polls about people's favourite eye types and silly random stuff. I'm not interested in polls on people's scries. Making it a post type would keep topics in the right place... and also let staff disable the post type in the Suggestions forum.

In general, with rules and safeguards to prevent popularity contests, this would be fun.

Support. People love polls and it would make- as you two said- it easier to check what opinions others have for things like scries and outfits.

Personally I feel OP of the forum thread should be able to edit and clear the poll as well. Including the ability to manually end the poll, as well as there being a timer. It would make them quite versatile.

I support the idea of making polls a thread type! I think I was on a forum a while ago that did this (it was probably a phbb forum lol) and how it worked was op coulc create polls that would be stickied to the top of the thread which was super useful

Support for polls in threads as long as the thread still promotes discussion. No support for a separate forum just for polls. It would be such a mish mash of topics. Related threads should go in the forum for their subject matter.

Support!

It would be amazing having it as a forum feature and not needed to go to strawpoll of google to do this, which also prevents younger and less experience players to click on links just to be part of a poll
