@Shlambini

This entire thread is image heavy don't worry about it. :P

For this I use the ratio of 100g to $1. The G:T ratio sits at around 1:3000 right now but I personally use 1:1250. Some artists go as low as 1:1000 but that's a lot of lost treasure when you're getting into higher-tiered commissions. Just something to keep in mind. I'm only going to price in gems and USD just so you can pick your own treasure ratio later!

Jumpin' right into this and starting with your icons. Since icons are some of the smallest commissions you can offer, plus your style is a little more simplistic, I'd say these are sitting around 50g or $0.50 USD. I usually don't like pricing under a dollar so I'm gonna give you some quick tips here to bump it easily over a dollar. The first icon has shading but it is barely visible. Choose a darker shading color. Make it known that your icons come shaded so you can add on that extra 50 cents. Also since icons are small, play around with expressions! Show that you can do a super happy or angry expression. That adds more work and detail and you can raise your base prices more.

Hopping into your fullbodies I'm going to price your lined stuff at a scale of around $4 to $7 or 400g to 700g. Your sketchy stuff I'd say can go between $4 to $5 or 400g to 500g. Starting with your lined pieces, you've got a lot of clean linework and nice detail. The second one has a really good expression and I like your shape language. Very round and bouncy. What I'm majorly seeing here are some anatomy issues and execution issues. The top fullbody has a really stiff pose coming and the tail is a little too sharply bent. It looks almost broken. Foreshortening on tails is annoying as hecc but keep practicing and you'll get it. The second lined piece has a lot of nice drips but because they're not lined or different colors from the character's body, you get a lot of eyestrain and linebreaks without a clear indicator of what's going on. This is especially visible on the feet. If there were lines or darker colors that'd fix right up. For your sketchy pieces, I just see a few small anatomy issues. The top one's legs are a little wonky and feel disproportionate but I love the colors. The bottom one has an awesome expression but is really busy with all the scribble sketching. Just a very small hit of shading would help break up the shapes better here.

Pixel art: $3 to $7 or 300g to 700g. Obviously the plain linework piece is going to cost less than a colored and shaded piece. You've got some nice expression work and colors in here. You've got good starting implications of 3D shapes and some nice detail work. The top one looks like a WIP but I've never seen pixel art with a visible sketch before so that threw me off hard. I couldn't tell where some of the lines were because it was sketched and drawn in the same pen. The second one is really pretty. I like the pop of green from her eyes and the bandaid. My comments here is that the shading is too light again. It can be harder to see on the areas like the white, especially when on a transparent background. The jaw is also a liiiitle too straight. Jaws have a slight curve in them. The last one is adorable. I love the pose and the colors. The mask is cute and fits well with the face. Only comment here is again the too light of shading. It isn't as bad in the hair but looking at places like the face and neck it is barely visible. You also have solid areas of pure black here which look flat in comparison. Hitting them with a bit of grey or white to make highlights will make it match better!

Hope that helped you out a bit. :)

@ProbablyLying

I'm glad to hear that some people are skimming the thread! There's definitely a lot of information in my posts so hearing that it is reaching more people is awesome.

To start with, all your prices seem pretty fair though I'd make a few adjustments. I'm going to price you in gems (ratios are on the first post now!). So the base price is fair, although I'd say you can go up to 75g. For the genes as long as you have a list marking down what gets which upcharge, that also sounds fair to me! Apparel and skins I personally tend to have on a sliding scale. This is because they're not all made equal. An accent of just a different belly color is easier than a skin with a bird face and glasses are easier to draw than a full striped scarf. This is up to you of course, you can just upcharge a flat rate, have a sliding scale, or just take it case by case.

Alright honestly those are really good for someone working without pen pressure. Also oh my god how do you have the patience for that. I stab my surface when the pen pressure bugs out. Most of my notes were things that can be solved really quickly when you get pen pressure. (Line weight, highlight shape, ect.) Overall they look really cute! You've got some awesome adopts.

Ahh thank you so much for all the feedback! You made it a very pleasant read, and I'm very thankful you take the time and effort to make it both comfortable and constructive.

It's actually all digital so I'll try and factor that in. I must confess I haven't drawn on paper in... years really. But I'm glad that it resembles traditional as that was the intention behind it!
I totally see what you mean with the linework. I think I'll test out some things with more detail and/or a simple fill - I've done that before with another style and I quite liked the result of that. And if that doesn't work, I think I might just opt out of that option. After all, it is shading and coloring that I really love to do.

Huh, I hadn't thought about that the bg colors actually don't do that much for the overall drawing. I'll definitely look into that. I have wanted to do some more about the the bgs but I'm not that sure where to start.

I still have a lot to learn about fullbody anatomy especially. I will admit that I did think about the hip cloth piece but was too lazy and too daunted to really look into it or find a reference of moving cloth. Me and cloth are not the best of friends. It's definitely more a piece for myself, but it's something I'm working on right now so I thought I'd include it ^^

Generally, I'm glad to hear I'm not too off with my pricing. It's been great getting a second opinion and some feedback, it's really helpful! So yeah, thank you so much again :3

@Viscere I'm gonna have to read through this thread. Don't really have the time right now, but curious. I was trying to sell this kinda thing for about 15-20kt/g about a year ago. Edit-Now read through thread some. Methinks this was perhap low, even with my skill level... This is the most recent thing I did. Think you could help? I don't mind a bit of harshness.

Hey I’m back! I started doing pixel art yesterday or something? Also added some basic shading

Finally a thread with honest, helpful feedback from what I've seen reading through a few pages

So, I haven't had coms open since late 2018 (it's been a while I know, life's been stressful) and since then my style has gone through some rather large improvements anatomy-wise, but not necessarily expression, shading-wise, or backgrounds because I lack experience in those. I've tried asking around, but most people have the typical response of "I have no idea."

Here's a link to a wiki that contains most of my recent works save for the ones that are still in progress. Most are dated with the year they were drawn if that helps (a majority being 2020/late 2019)

In short, I'm mostly looking for feedback on general pricing in gems and some suggestions for fixes that could help increase the flow of pieces or their value (I'm looking at you shading...and backgrounds). Oh! Suggestions on charging more for certain genes, apparel, accents, etc. would be great too as some of them are hecka complex and other a super simple. Please be as honest or as harsh as necessary, as criticism is the key to improvement after all
Edit: I can also dig up my old commission forum if that would be of any use?

Firstly, thank you for offering such honest and thorough advice, I can tell just by leafing through the first couple of pages of this thread.

My style has changed a lot over the past few years but I'm comfortable where I am right now, but I mainly specialise in black and white head shots. colours confuse me

I'm mainly looking for feedback on pricing, right now I'm priced at about 15-20kt for most my art.

Here's a link to my deviantart which hosts most of my art.

Thank you again for this! Any help is very much appreciated!

@DarkPuffin

I'm glad to see you read through the thread! There's definitely a lot of information in it so reading through everything will help out at least somewhat. Even if my replies are like books.

Yes, you'd be correct in that being a major undercharge. On top of that it was a traditional piece so you've likely doubly undercharged yourself. Tsk tsk tsk. Bonks for you. For the traditional piece I'd say definitely at least 45kt to 55kt. It's a fullbody in a rather dynamic pose, full genes, lots of details. My comments here are anatomy anatomy anatomy. Spirals have a consistent thickness until you reach the tail, which starts to taper. Your spiral's body gets suuuper thin right before the back legs. The head is also a big too big for the neck. Working with thickness and body proportions is a lot of trial and error so stick with it!

Ahahaha trackpad art... I think I'd die if I tried that so kudos to you for pushing through! So looking at the fullbody I'd price around 180kt to 250kt. Fullbodies will cost more by default and since you've got a full color and cell shaded piece those costs need to be thought of as well. For the bust I'd go from around 95kt to 120kt. Same reasons as above but less since there's less character showing. Here again the biggest things I'm seeing are anatomy issues. Trackpad art is haaard so I can cut you some major slack there but I'll still mention it. Practicing with pencil and paper might help you out a bit there. The top one has some good proportions and foreshortening but the back leg is bent up too far and looks like he's about to fall over. The ledge needs to be under his knee to give the illusion of weight or his foot needs to be resting on something. Otherwise a human pulling that pose would fall backwards. On the second one the jawline is a bit rough. Humans don't have that many curves and bumps in their jaw. Think of a skull when you're drawing the jawline. There's usually little to no fat on the edge of the jaw, but some above and below it, which is why you tend to get harder lines. My other comment would be that the hair looks like it is floating off the head. Even for flipped-up styles the hairline would still be visible and hiding the base of the antlers!

I hope that helps you out a bit. Let me know if you need clarification on anything or if you want more feedback!

@Kyan0s

Welcome back! That looks super cute!

For that I'd price it around.... 90g to 130g give or take. I'm seeing a lot of merging issues, meaning I can't quite tell what's where, where the different parts of the head and neck start and stop, ect. This is especially prevalent to me in the mane. I'm gonna attribute this to two things here, the line color and the background. Since you're working with a character that has black markings you'll want to make them lighter or darker than your line color (or change your line color if that's easier) so you're not losing detail. I'm also fighting with the background because the character is mostly white and is sitting on the lightest area of the background. Flipping the gradient going light to dark instead of dark to light will help that as well.

Hello!! I haven't done commissions before but I've been thinking about starting some on FR for a little over a year now and pricing has always been something that stops me ;;

I was thinking about starting with easier commissions like busts, icons and sketches on FR because I'm a far cry from being proficient at full bodies ;w;

I just made a new thread for my most recent art here!

and thank you so much for doing this!! posts like these really boost the morale of the art community and could be the push some artists need to start their own commissions or even pursue art as the financial means to their livelihood! you're doing god's work op >:'D
