Looking forward, he took in the gleaming white snow of the course, with pine trees spread sporadically around the edge of the course. Looking to his sides, he watched his competitors prepare themselves for the long journey. He couldn't help but admire the beautiful icy scenery, having never seen such quantity of the frozen water before. The announcer stepped up to the stand and began the preparation for the countdown. Nebulae quickly tightened his boots, and lined up at the starting line. He rolled his shoulders, ready for the endurance test that was cross country skiing. With a 3, 2, 1, the race was started. Nebulae focused on going as fast as possible, but still retaining energy to last the whole race. He panicked as the other racers zoomed past him, even spotting one laughing as they took the lead. They had only just started the race, he couldn't have lost yet, right?

He is more than capable of balancing on a tightrope, of jumping and spinning and performing otherwise seemingly impossible feats, but skiing is beyond him. He can see why his fellow performers singled him out for this sport. There’s jumping in the name sure, but he knows it’s far different from what he’s used to doing. Nonetheless, he persists. When he steps out onto the skis, he doesn’t expect to enjoy it. He does so out of obligation, and to prove the denizens of the Carnival are so versatile they can excel at anything they choose to do, even something this outside their comfort zone. He envision the hot cocoa and spiced mead his friends will have waiting for him when this is all over, and he tells himself it won’t take long to finish. He expects that he will be incredibly out of his depth, like a fish thrust out of water. He expects to feel discomfort from the chill of the glittering snow around him, seeping deep into his scales. He expects to do well enough to bring pride to his teammates, but not well enough to win anything of value. The only thing he did not expect was the wind rushing past his face, the adrenaline pumping through his veins. He does not expect to absolutely, completely love it. When he finally opens his mind to it, he is wrapped up into the rush and the thrill of the sport, and it is beautiful.

A light dusting of snow had fallen overnight, and though Marianne was not an Ice dragon by birth she still felt the urge to partake in the many snow day activities that she had seen hatchlings and their families attending to all day. For now, however, she had an event to focus on, and perhaps even win a high enough placing in to take a medal home to her clan. Though the Wildclaw had never been the most sporty of dragons, the ice hockey event had been the one that seemed most fitting for her general background, and she was eagerly looking forward to the chance to get out on the ice and show everyone at the Games exactly what she was made of.

It was only a distraction from the main problem, though. Her mate, Galen, was late. The two of them had seen the Sornieth Winter Games as a time to get away from the Lair for awhile. Their lives had been hectic since the collapse of their first home to the roving Beastclans. It was nice, getting out with the world for a bit and not worrying about fitting into a new place. It's not that they were ungrateful, it was just taking some time to slowly settle on their new life and feel safe again. On a whim, mostly Starbloom's, they'd registered for the figure skating competition as part of their holiday. They weren't really expecting to win; Starbloom just wanted to use it as an excuse to dress up and show off how beautiful her plumage was. And it was a subtle way for her to get Galen to fancy himself up as well. He was always so reserved, but in a lovable and gently goofy way. It was so hard to get him into nice clothes. Their turn was coming up fast, and Galen still hadn't showed. Starbloom was trying to resist the urge to pace. Where was he? He said he wanted to make his outfit a surprise, but... if he wasn't here soon, they'd miss their chance. He'd never let her down before, but she couldn't help but worry he'd gotten tangled up while trying to put his skates on. He was THAT kind of dragon. Just as she was about to go charging towards the dressing rooms, she spied him hurrying over. Her jaw dropped in awe. "Did I do all right?" he asked, panting some. He adjusted his neck ruffles a little, trying to smooth out his hastily-donned costume. Starbloom smiled and couldn't help but hug him. It fit his personality perfectly, and she had to admit, he looked simply dashing in green. Their turn was called, and they stepped onto the ice together. They'd chosen a slow yet elegant waltz as their performance. As they skated across the rink, Starbloom was once again reminded of why they worked so well as a couple, despite how different they truly were. It was a nice, quiet moment for them, and she'd cherish it long after they'd returned home.

this stupid boi is still unnamed, let's just ignore that fact

It wasn't visible, but it felt good to be in the Southern Icefields again. Maybe he even looked forward to participating in the winter games today, for which he was just getting ready - before they had ventured to the surface, he had never thought of something like this...

Krasi was with him & just finished helping him to fasten the Skiiers.

"Wooow, beautiful...", Duis mocked, sitting in the snow in safe distance, regarding the Gaoler with a soft smirk.

- And said one already snarled his teeth, ready to snap at him, when Krasi to his side laughed about the remark, as if it had been but an innocent joke.
So ... he reconsidered & with a silent huff glanced at Duis for a moment, before he turned away.
It wasn't long until the start anyway.

"I wish you the best of luck!", Krasi cheered.
And with a short nod towards her, he made his way to the starting point.
