Can we just talk about how gnarly this elephant like creature was? I'm sure they were sweet but.. . Very startling looking. :'D The first picture makes me almost uncomfortable

I feel like our boys from the paleozoic are underrepped on this thread, so I wanna give my love and respect to the majestic dimetrodon, mankind's wackiest distant uncle

I'm really quite fond of Permian-era stem mammals (I did see gorgonops mentioned earlier, hard agree on that btw), especially the realization of their more mammalian traits in recent years. I think I remember discussion about how even the larger stem mammals likely had more of a leathery skin covering as opposed to reptilian scales and I'm not sure why, but I got especially stoked about that.
Gonna close with my apprecation overall for some of the wackier products of the Cambrian: tullimonstrum with its weird stalk eyes and grabby thing, opabinia with its five (???) eyes, and this incorrect reconstruction of hallucigenia that was straight up so bizarre that it got me into paleobio in the first place:
