Shei

Ani regarded Kalaziel with an odd look, eye travelling to Laurry and then back to her. She raised an eyebrow... or maybe it was both. Shei couldn't tell through the bandage covering her face. "I wouldn't introduce myself to Thea that way, if I were you. She's a big fan. Birds of a feather, and whatnot." Shei struggled to contain her snort at the pun, not wanting to let the woman see her amusement.

As Ani led them through the crumbled corridors, Shei walked beside Laurry. She shrugged in response to his words. "We're all in danger as long as the Broken are around, right? Might as well try to help." She forced a grin at him. "Cheer up, mealworm. You got more allies than you expected, didn't you? We're-" she tripped mid-sentence and grabbed his arm to stabilise herself before carrying on, nonchalant "-totally dependable, right Oni?"

Her brother gave her an only half-fake look of despair before turning and touching Kalaziel's arm comfortingly. Shei had a sneaking feeling it comforted him a lot more than it comforted the masked girl.

The wasps kept a respectful distance from them, parting around them like an honour guard. The tour was brief, most of the survivors being in the clinic. They were either lying on beds or attending the ones lying on beds or ordering around the ones attending the ones lying on beds. Ani pointed each person out with names and abilities, though how she expected them to remember all that information was beyond Shei.

She noticed the woman never asked them of their own powers, specifically, and she wondered suspiciously if the woman already knew somehow. Oni's must be easy to guess, his nerves at seeing the new people showing in his fluctuating features. She hadn't changed since leaving the mansion though, and her mark was under her shirt. Maybe Ani trusted her with the dagger and axe at her sides. That was a nice thought.

Oni

The tour was concluded briefly, and Ani showed the three of them to a dorm-like room full of bunkbeds- Shei had split up with them upon meeting one of the less injured assassins who was a hairdresser. Oni felt a little nervous letting her leave his sight, and her dramatic look back as they disappeared around the corner didn't help. "If I never come back..." she said, touching her forehead in a mock swoon, "avenge me."

Ugh... sometimes Oni hated Shei's brusque attitude. Once Ani left them, promising no wasps would approach them, he found an empty lower bunk and sat in the furthest corner against the wall. He was still shaking from the stress of the day. Gnawing on his nails, he tried not to look as impatient or scared as he felt. It all seemed to be hitting him at once.

They were going to face the monsters who did this... who murdered so many people. What if they died? What if Shei died and he didn't? Or he died and she didn't? He shook. Laurry and Kalaziel... they weren't hesitating. He couldn't either. But the fear was so intense... He couldn't push down his fear like Shei could. He couldn't take his bad emotions, and make them fuel him. He could only shut his eyes and force himself to do what he had to... For the sake of everyone else.

Kalaziel

Kalaziel stared at her feet, shuffling them uncomfortably. "s..sorry..." she mumbled.

And then a gentle touch. Oni's hand. She smiled, but it was hidden by her mask. And then her eyes drifted to the wasps. They kept their distance.. but they were still in view.. still making Kalaziel nervous. She watched them warily as they wandered through the hallways, never once taking her eye from the eerie creatures.

Kalaziel placed a hand on Oni's arm, tapping him gently. "You keep doing that and you won't have any nails left." she stated gently.

Noting the fear on her face, she started to sing. A gentle crooning song fell from her lips, soothing and relaxing in an attempt to ease his fears. It was a pity that her own song had no affect on herself... because honestly, she was afraid too. Afraid of the creatures that Laurry and Ani called the Broken.. and afraid of the wasps which she could still hear buzzing in the next room.

As she sang she noted that a weight seemed to drop from Laurry's shoulders. She hadn't noticed it there before, but he seemed to get younger by the moment. She couldn't be selfish and wish for something she could never have. If her power could help.. she had to do what she could.. even if she was scared out of her mind.
______________

Laurry

Laurry smirked as Shei tripped over her feet. "You aren't doing a good job of proving you are dependable by tripping over your feet." he teased. Then he listened to Ani in silence, paying close attention as she spoke of everyone's powers and abilities. He took mental note of each one, paying close attention to a select few. He seemed slightly shocked when Ani mentioned having a Honey Badger Anima somewhere.

He quickly spoke, turning to Ani. "Honey Badger?" he sucked in a breath. "Lacey is here??"

Lacey was a woman who was a Honey Badger Anima. A long time ago, Laurry and her had worked together on a job. He knew she'd been from a neighboring guild, but he didn't know it was this one. It would be kinda nice to see her again, and working alongside her.. he always knew he could count on her as a fighter.

And then, he watched Shei sit down by one of the Assassins who apparently cut hair. Probably to even out her uneven hair.. or something. He snickered as she spoke, following the others.

@Draconequis timeskipped, it's about the middle of the night))

Shei
Shei woke up in a cold sweat, unsure where she was and itching to scream. Her immediate reaction was to clamp teeth on skin, letting the pain ground her. After a solid minute of pushing down the fear and anger in her throat, she opened her eyes and looked around. The room she was in was dark, but the light of a lantern down the hallway seeped in through the doorway. It might not have been so strong had the door been closed, but there was no door left on the torn hinges.

Glancing up and down the rows of beds and catching sight of Oni's sleeping face from the top bed of the bunk beside hers, Shei was able to relax slightly as recollection flooded in. I'm in... the assassin's hideout. The wasp girl's headquarters. They were safe. Not... she shut her eyes and sucked in a deep breath against the memory of her dream. It was quickly fading from mind as she woke up, but... it hadn't been very pleasant. Sitting up, she dropped her feet to the ground and stood up silently. In the faint light, she counted hardly ten people in the room, some sharing beds and- if Shei squinted she could see one person napping underneath a bed.

Eyes scanning through the dark, Shei wondered where Laurry and Kalaziel were. None of the sleeping figures were close enough to distinguish faces, and she couldn't be bothered to creep up on each individual to check. Well, whatever. They were definitely fine, wherever they were.

Slipping through the busted doorway on bare feet, she followed the softly glowing light down the hall and into the lounge room where Ani had spoken to the four of them before. There was no one there, but beside the lantern on the coffee table Shei could see stacks of paper spread around haphazardly. The writing on them was nearly incomprehensible in it's messiness. Deciding not to stick around to try and read them, Shei left. Probably Ani's "plans", whatever that involved.

Wandering through the dark empty halls, she tugged at her hair. It was even shorter now, and the right side had been shorn in a half-undercut. Laurry's hair clip was pinned fast to the left side. Not out of sentimentality or anything. Tufts of hair just kept flying in Shei's face. It was annoying. The hairdressing assassin had whistled in appreciation as Shei looked at the finished product in the mirror, and she had to agree- it looked pretty damn good. He would have hated it.

Oni had been much more relaxed when she met the others in the dorms. She suspected Kalaziel had attributed to that. The relief on his face was plain, though, and it made her feel bad for teasing him when she left. As they got ready for lights out, Oni took a top bunk- probably appealed to his possum senses or something. Shei couldn't stomach heights though. She took a different bed altogether; it was better to fall asleep with her brother in sight, rather than invisible in the bunk above hers.

After some more aimless walking, eventually Shei found herself in front of what seemed to be the kitchen. Her stomach took the cue to grumble loudly, and she shrugged to herself. Food, then. The bite mark on her hand throbbed, some blood trickling down. She ignored it stubbornly.

Oni

Oni opened his eyes when he heard Shei leave the room. He had been sleeping restlessly for a few hours already, waking up too often to dream as he was afraid of his own nightmares. Seeing her gone now though, he wondered if he should get up too. Honestly, the reason he hadn't already because he was busy stressing. About the Broken... Kalaziel's allergy to the wasps, whose buzzing sounds had dimmed to silence a while ago. Apparently even insects need to sleep. And Ani's words kept echoing through his head, her voice reminding him that the only exit from this underground lair was ready to blow at the first hint of intruders. Not exactly easy facts to sleep with.

Sighing, Oni sat up. He climbed down the ladder quietly as he could, and gazed around. Was Kalaziel up too? He'd like to talk to her, if possible... but if Laurry was around, he guessed he could speak to the man. Maybe he could answer some questions about Shei? It had been a while since they made the deal and yet Laurry was still yet to make good on it. He still wasn't sure what he wanted to ask the man, even though the man had done nothing but raise more questions since they met.

Kalaziel

Kalaziel felt safe in the bed, surrounded by a mountain of blankets, it was almost possible to drown out the sounds of the wasps. Finally, even though her fear had a tight grip on her, she fell asleep. In her dream, the wasps were all around her, crawling in her hair and buzzing in her ears. She woke with a start, blankets twisted around her body. No.. no way.. there was no way she could stay here knowing that the wasps were so close.. even though they weren't buzzing anymore she knew.. she knew they were here. She'd never felt so anxious before. there was no way she was going to sleep anymore. She kept the blanket twirled around her body as she moved down the hallway. Hearing a strange shuffling noise, she flinched, humming to soothe herself.

She heard a crinkle of papers on the floor. Nervousness filling her to the brim, she clenched the blanket tighter against her body.

Kalaziel held her breath, creeping off after the sound, only to find.. what seemed to be Shei. "Oh.. god.. thank god." She murmured, doing a quick prayer with her hands. "Shei.. i.. i don't like it here.. i know we said we would stay.. but.. i.. i can't even sleep." Anyone could see how nervous she was.. how much effort it was taking her to just stand in this one spot and not be cowering in the corner of the room. "Wasps are tiny.. if i step on one on accident.. i'm dead. If one so much as scrapes a stinger against me.. i'm gone. Back with my old master.. they had a really expensive medicine which could protect me if something went wrong. here.. we have nothing.. nothing.." She shook, curling slightly into herself, fear giving her an almost insane, very disheveled appearance. She didn't even notice Shei's wound, as her eyes were cast upwards as if searching for invisible ghosts.

Laurry

Laurry wasn't particularly tired.. nor was he able to sleep after hearing about the dangers ahead of them.. So he slid underneath a bed and started to fomulate plans. Thinking deeply, he sighed as he closed his eyes for a moment just to clear his mind.

It had been a mistake to bring Shei and the others here.. he couldn't afford to keep himself close to anyone.. but he couldn't help himself. People were easy to like.. to love.. and he was falling into the same pattern all over again.

Laurry heard the shuffle of feet. Someone got up, and was exploring. He forcefully dilated his pupils. Shei.. barefoot and traveling into the unknown. His thoughts forgotten, he focused on watching her leave the room. Should he go after her? This was a place.. a world unfamiliar to the girl.. would she welcome his presence? He was about to follow after her, when he heard a soft cry. Someone shifted in the bunk right above his.. and a soft sobbing could be heard. Before long, delicate feet drifted over the edge of the bed. Kalaziel, wrapped in a blanket like a fortress, fear dancing across her face. He watched her go with worry. She was afraid.. of the wasps.. of their situation.. of everything most likely. The poor girl...

He lay still for a few more moments before sliding smoothly out from under the bed, stretching his limbs out and wiggling his nub-hand experimentally. The palm, pinkie and thumb had grown back so far, without the nails, so they looked really strange. Still, it was nice to have some fingers back on his hand. His pupils dilated, he located Oni in a bunk a bit away from them all. Heaving a heavy sigh, he clambored up the ladder and smoothly hefted himself into the bunk. "Yo." he murmured. "Cant sleep either i take it? Wanna learn to fight?" Fighting was something senseless.. it would be a nice distraction from the hell that was coming their way. To forget how he'd been staring at Shei ever since she'd got her hair evened out.. honestly.. she was sexy with her hair short. Though he wasn't about to let her know that.

Shei

Shei had frozen in alarm when she heard someone's voice, but relaxed as she recognised Kalaziel's voice. She turned around awkwardly, crumbs falling from her hands as she finished stuffing plain bread in her mouth and swallowed. The low light lit Kalaziel's silhouette up, casting a strange contrast to her fearful posture. Oh boy. Shei thought. Comforting people had never been her best asset... not even in the top 50. She tried to think back. What did she do when Oni was upset..?

Wiping her hands on her pants, Shei walked over to the other girl with the most comforting expression she could manage. "There, there, it's alright, Zel. Uh, I- here." She hugged her lightly, loose enough for the other girl to step away if she wanted. She could feel Kalaziel shaking. "I can't sleep either. It's really weird here, right? All these bugs and bodies and broken walls... It gives me the creeps." A hand lifted and started petting Kalaziel's hair, gently loosening the tangles caused by troubled sleep. What could she say to comfort her? Shei's mind ran blank, and a few silent moments passed. She still didn't know what to say.

Ah, f*ck. Whatever. "Don't, uh... Don't worry. Or- no, I know it's hard to stop being afraid, even if you know better rationally. Feelings are terrible like that. But... you have me, and Oni, and the worm to help you. We're all looking out for each other, right? I don't know about the others, but I won't hesitate to punch a bee if it comes too close to you." That was the worst attempt at comfort she'd ever tried to express. 'Punch a bee'? Great job, Shei. She coughed, and gave Kalaziel a smirk. Change the subject, change the subject. "I know Oni wouldn't mind carrying you if you're afraid of stepping on one, right?"She tried for an eye waggle. "... No? Okay I'm shutting up now."

Oni

His ears went back at Kalaziel's soft sounds of distress, and he was fretting over whether to go after her when Laurry climbed up into his bed. Flinching slightly in surprise, he stuttered, "F-fight? Up here..?" He realised how ridiculous that idea was, and shook his head.

A part of him was disappointed Laurry followed through with the deal after all, but he shut that part up. He would become useful to his friends. "I mean, um, okay. And, so do you, um.." After a few moments of hesitating, he just blurted it out quietly. "Did you have any questions about Shei that you..? Wanted to ask?" It felt wrong not to hold up his side of the deal. Grabbing his sword instead of looking Laurry in the eye, Oni fiddled with it and started clambering down the ladder quietly. Leaving the safety of the high bed didn't help his nerves, but... it wasn't like he couldn't see fine anyway. Night vision and all. It was more the silence that scared him. The buzzing, droning silence.

"Where are we going?" He whispered to Laurry. "Is there a free room we could use, or..?" His grip on the sword sheath was clumsy, held close to his chest like a ward against something unholy.

Kalaziel

Kalaziel watched as Shei walked over, stiff as the girl hugged her. Too upset and nervous to do much in return. "Yeah.." She leaned slightly into Shei, heaving a sigh.

Then, she smiled through her nervousness, snorting as a soft laugh came from deep within her chest. "Punch a bee." her eyes sparkled playfully. "I'd like to see that." She nodded. "I mean.. i know.. i know you will protect me.. but there's always that nagging at the back of my mind.. of what if.. what if something goes wrong.. what if i am stung? You know.. if feels like you are going through a dark tunnel, you can't breathe, you can't see, or hear.. everything turns colors like blue and purple.. and it.. it just feels wrong." She shivered, shaking her head. "If i could just fly." Wings stretched from her back, brown feathers glistening in the faint light.

Then Kalaziel fumbled with her fingers, staring down at her feet, mumbling under her breath, her fear forgotten for a moment underneath a shyness which usually never showed. "I couldn't have him do that. He couldn't carry me around here.. not while i have legs.. and i should be using them." having him carry her.. just reminded her too much of her life as the angel. people carried her all the time on pedestals, above others.. she was not above anyone. She just wanted to be the same as everyone. She didn't want to be different anymore. Which meant she had to deal with her fear.. the same as anyone else.

Laurry

Laurry smirked at Oni as he asked if they were going to fight in the bed. Then he slid down the ladder, hearing Oni's question. He turned to Oni, a thoughtful look on his face. "Yeah. Did that guy.. the one i dispatched. Did he ever.. touch her?" The intensity in his voice, combined with his burning gaze should have made it clear what he was talking about, but just to be sure he finished. "He never.. forced himself on her, did he?" If he did, Laurry plotted on going back to his home and pretending to be him for a few months, destroying his reputation while he lay dead in a hole somewhere.

Laurry just shrugged as Oni asked where they would be going. He moved smoothly down the hallways, his arms grasping for his weapons. Tentacles wrapped around the edge of a sword, suctions gripping the blade tightly. "We have rooms.. far away from the earshot of others." His skin rippled slightly, the rings on his arms changing to a cool blue color. "We are.. marginally safer in here than we are anywhere else." He sighed. "What is your anima again? Its a beast of prey, right? Not a predator. That is going to be a problem. Most anima who are not predators have trouble fighting. So... i think we will focus on defense, and using your speed to get the better of you. As well as when you transform, you look like a beast. With all that fur, you are almost like a werewolf or something. We could use that to convince people to leave you alone." he wiggled one of his arms, transforming it smoothly into a tentacle. "Octopi do the same thing actually. We move our bodies, changing them into larger surfaces in order to scare predators away." He flicked the tentacle, and it turned black with stripes of red and green. Slowly the tentacle moved, almost like a snake. And for a moment, it almost seemed like Laurry had a snake for an arm instead of a tentacle.

"I know you can't do this." He shifted the tentacle-snake back into an arm. "But.. if you let me work with you, i can figure out what you can do." he finished by leading them into a small, secluded room with several benches surrounding a large and very old mirror. Laurry shut the door with a click. "Shall we?" He asked.

Shei

Shei really hoped she wouldn't have to actually punch a bee. She would definitely try for Kalaziel's sake, but... Uh. Yeah. She shook her head and shrugged. "He could do something else for you," she offered with a sharp little grin. Her belly grumbled again, and she swore and went back to digging in the cupboards for food while still talking. It was getting easier- maybe she could do this after all.

"Yeah, fear is sh*t," she said simply over her shoulder as she listened to Kalaziel's explanation. Saying she didn't know the feeling would be blatant lying. "It's so annoying. What's the point of a feeling that makes you freeze and scream when you need to run and hide?" Shrugging, she moved back and hooked a chair leg with her foot to pull it out. Her hands were preoccupied with a bag of bread and all sorts of spreads. "Go ahead and sit down. It's like, I know I'm in danger, brain, no need to freak out and make things worse. So, how I deal- not that I get afraid often, mind you- when it gets obnoxiously loud, is I visualise whatever's scaring me and..." Imagine it killing me over and over until it stops bothering me. Too late, Shei realised what she was about to tell the sheltered girl was a little dark and maybe not a healthy coping method to share with friends. "Uh. You know, come to think of it, I'm not that great at life advice. Want some?" Sweating, she offered Kalaziel the butterknife handle-first and shoved a plain slice of bread in her mouth. Smooth. Nice going, Shei. You failed miserably.

Ah, she had to fix this. Coughing as she swallowed too fast, Shei hammered her chest and kept forging on. "Sorry. I'm not exactly good at handling my own problems so I don't really have any clue what to say... I want to help you, but I don't want you picking up any of my bad habits. Just, uh, don't bottle your feelings up, I guess? I'm always here if you need to let loose on someone... Gods, we all need to get a therapist after all this is done," she muttered to herself darkly, though the thought was terror-inducing in of itself.

Oni

Laurry's question made him flinch, even as he shook his head. "No... he never..." The old familiar guilt welled in his chest, and he clenched his fists. Stop being so pathetic. You know she's okay- she'll be okay. "No," he said more strongly- then shrunk when a body stirred on the other side of the room.

As they moved down the halls, Oni kept a nervous eye out for people who might suddenly jump out at them. He jumped at every flickering shadow, before scolding himself for his ridiculous paranoia. Even if there were other people awake, he would hear them. His swivelling ears were working perfectly fine. Keeping his eyes fastidiously trained on Laurry's back, Oni nodded at his question before feeling embarrassed. "Yes, a possum," he said in a rush and fell silent listening to his words.

He wasn't too bad in a fight, at least not when he could pretend he was little again, fighting back to back with even littler Shei. That was back when he was human, and involved human thinking. The moment he started thinking about fighting- whatever had killed Laurry's family, though, he felt locked up with an primitive kind of terror. It was unknown. It was horrible.

Eyes following Laurry as he shut the door behind them, Oni took a deep breath and tried to settle his nerves. He had doubts about how scary he could be- sure he was kind of tall, but he was hardly threatening. He trusted Laurry's words though, and nodded at him as streadily as he could. "I'm ready."

Kalaziel

Kalaziel grasped the bread in her fingers as she listened to Shei, nibbling daintily at the corner of the bread as if she was a bird picking at scraps of food off the ground.

"Something else for me? Like what?" She asked lightly.

Then she stared at the ground, before perching on a chair, tucking her legs up to her chest, her wings fluttering nervously behind her as she nibbled the bread more. Shei was a welcome distraction right now.

Kalaziel perked slightly as Shei cut herself off, mumbling and shoving bread in her mouth. "I think.. all Anima need a therapist. Being a being with the intelligence of a human, treated like a horse will mess with anyone's brain i think."

Laurry

Laurry heaved a sigh of relief. "Good. Men with unclean hands shouldn't touch pretty girls. That's why i don't touch women." he casually whipped out a knife and started digging the dirt from under his fingernails, ever so delicately wiping the dirt onto his shirt.

"Possum, eh? Now.. is that an Opossum, or a Possum?" he grinned mischeviously. "There is a difference..not much, but its pretty important for what battle style we can use. Also.. i think if i remember correctly, Opossums are immune to poison while Possums are not."

Sensing the discomfort of Oni, Laurry smiled at him. "You know.. you can't make connections in this life. We were always told a thousand times to never befriend.. because its not safe. Anyone can die at any time. Its the life of those without a face." he chuckled, his face rippled and changed slightly as he spoke. Clenching the muscles in his face, Laurry reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn sketch of his own face. After a few moments of staring at it, his face was his own again. "Sorry. The muscles in my face get confused sometimes.. its hard to keep them all in control sometimes. I forget my own face."

Moving the knife in his hand, Laurry faced the lanky boy. "We really need to feed you. You need to put on some weight. we can change that into muscle. i could see you being a quicker fighter. probably more of a daggar guy rather than swords."
