i've reread it (i mostly skimmed the first time over the coliseum stuff) and i understand the reasoning for levelling up dragons, and are getting certain genes for similar reasons? like, is it so that you have more valuable hatchlings to sell?

At its core the game is pretty much about Pretty Dragons and Breeding Pretty Dragons and Dragon Dress-Up. Genes let you accomplish breeding what you want for your own lair/projects/hatchery/whatever, as well as, yes, selling hatchlings for more. But, that's a pretty chancy way to make money- the dragon market is fickle and fad-prone, and you need to be good at advertising to do well off it.
At the end of the day it's just a question of "What is my treasure for?". Apparel? Rare stuff? Familiars? Breeding projects?
Do what's fun for you. If genes aren't it, don't!

I bred a pair with a slight chance of some really nifty outcomes, and lots and lots of chance of pinks... got five eggs, and thought surely I'd get something awesome. Instead, it's flamingos all the way down. None of these are *bad* I just have nothing that I can do with them, so they're going on the giveaway first in case anyone loves them.
