I wasted all of my treasure on the rusted treasure chest, and it didn't give me anything good. Also, they sell them in the Auction house.

What kind of chests do you get from familiars? Iron, rusted or gold? How else do you get them?

There's a reason why those chests are cheap. Please check this article for information on what's available from the various openables on site:

Familiars will give various chests at bonding levels until they have been Awakened. After that they only give 50 treasure per day. Details here:

They can also be found when you use the Digging skill when Gathering. The more expensive the chest the rarer they are.
