Can you use more than one gene at a time?
Each dragon gets just one primary gene (for the body), one secondary gene (for the wings), and one tertiary gene (a variety gene that can display in different ways depending on the gene). Sadly you can't e.g. have multiple tertiaries even if they would look good together.

@gritdog each dragon can have three genes - one primary, one secondary and one tertiary. They affect different parts of the body. If you add a secondary to a dragon that already has a secondary, for example, it will overwrite the old one. You can experiment with the changes caused by different genes in Predict Morphology here.

Ahhhhh!!! This is soo much fun I can't stand it! The genes are a awesome new discovery for me, and I am having a wonderful time experimenting with them. Thank you to everyone for helping me figure it all out. Much appreciation to all of you.

yesss genes are so fun! they can completely change the look of a dragon
as an example, your dragon zazzle has the genes starmap/bee/glimmer:

if you change the secondary gene to blaze, it's a whole different color!

if you change all his genes - chorus/choir/okapi - you get different colors again, this time a regal purple and gold look

one thing to look out for, though: once you apply a gene, it's a done deal. you can't take it on and off like apparel. some genes are expensive, and if you change a gene and decide you want the old look back, you may end up paying a lot. but just previewing things in the scrying workshop is free

@Achaius
Look, I did it! I love the way he looks so much. Thanks for helping educate me on the genes, I really appreciate it. It's so much fun!
The Game Database (under Library tab on the left sidebar) is a great resource for helping you find where specific genes come from.
@gritdog
Most of the users here have already explained applying genes, but I wanted to clarify about gene parchments.
[item=ancient gene parchment: riot]
This is the ancient gene parchment for the current festival gene Riot. As it is an ancient gene, only ancients can use this gene.
However, for Parchments, you will need to exchange your Parchment at Glass and Gloss' Genuine Genes. This is a shop in the Grand Exchange tab that's always available.
If I want to apply Riot to one of my dragons, I'd search for it and see what comes up. Now, you can see the type of dragons that can use Riot.

So when you know the specific breed of Ancient that you want the gene applied to, you can trade it right here for your Parchments.
You can get Parchments from the Coliseum and from Festival shops.

Ancient Gene Parchment: Riot
Specialty Items
Ancient gene parchments are items that can be traded at Glass and Gloss' Genuine Genes for compatible Ancient breed genes. This scroll is for Tertiary Gene: Riot.

@Fishes That is so helpful, thank you. I was wondering what to do with the gene parchment I accidentally purchased, having no idea how to use it. I appreciate the explanation.
