TOPIC | How do I actually get dragons to sell

Hello,

I’ve got new batch of hatchlings, some really pretty, when I try to sell based of pricing guides I’ve seen they never sell, and I haven’t worked up the courage to post on “dragons for sale” board cause their not like Gen1s or something super desired, but it seems like I can only get them sold for 5k?
I am pretty new but guides I’ve seen said I should be aiming higher than 5k. For instance I have a Coatl who using the calculators I’ve seen would price at 16k but I can’t even get them to sell for 8k?

Maybe the guide is really outdated and the market has really shifted or maybe I really gotta hustle on the forums but idk. Maybe I’m also impatient.

The Coatl in question is Gloom Cherub, Lead Butterfly, Wisteria Underbelly.

I haven’t figured out coding for the forums yet, part of why I haven’t posted on dragons for sale.

@Finifer

Pricing guides are like religions; if everyone followed the same one then the one true pricing guide would always be correct.

Unfortunately we have multiple pricing guides with varied pricing plus all the prices people make up for themselves for whatever reasons in the AH and Dragons for Sale.

For a reasonable idea of what your dragons are likely to sell at check the AH for similar colors/genes/breeds and price accordingly. Nothing close? Set any price you like and gradually lower it until you find out what a buyer will pay.

Check out Dragon Selling Points for a longer answer and resources for finding buyers.

I want to live in Theory. Everything works there.

Have you checked the Gem MP for Gene and Breed scrolls before buying an AH listing from me ending in 5g?
Do you advertise in “Find a Dragon” forums? If not, that’s why.
Seconding trying out posting in Find a Dragon. The main problem with selling dragons is that it's a lot of finding the right person at the right time. Another problem with selling dragons is there's so many, you've got a LOT of competition. You've got to put yourself out there, at least a little. Find a Dragon is kind like the opposite of Dragons for Sale, where folks post threads of what kinds of dragons they are looking for and if you happen to have something that fit's their criteria you can post your guys there. (I do find folks like it if you also have the guys listed on the AH that way they just need to hit a button if they want it rather than try to haggle, it's easier on anxious sellers too). Otherwise you just have to be patient on the AH or settle for fodder prices. I did notice that you're using treasure prices. Might I suggest switching to gems? Gem listings on the AH are listed before treasure listings by default, so folks would have to go through many pages of similar dragons before yours start showing up. Switching to gems would put your listings further up in the pages meaning folks would be more likely to see your guys. 15kt would approximately convert to ~15 gems or so I think?

Do you know of a good price guide that’s more current? The one I saw was 2022.

@Finifer
as mightwind mentioned, the best pricing guide you’re going to get is the auction house itself so that you’re pricing based on real demand from other players rather then having a random number thrown at you just because of what the breeding rarity is

this guide should be able to help you figure out some of the details for bbcoding

Also keep in mind that there are plenty of threads in the items for sale forums where you can exchange any gems you have for treasure, so there isn’t a huge difference when it comes to what currency you price things for

In my experience as someone who enjoys breeding and selling dragons but doesn’t have a dedicated hatchery, it’s much easier to sell dragons through Find a Dragon than Dragon Sales. It’s slower-moving and you’re showing dragons to users who are (hopefully) already interested in the kinds of dragons you have, which means you get a lot more eyes on your dragons than posting into the hubbub of the Dragon Sales where your thread will drop off the front page in under an hour. Another thing to keep in mind is genes/colors. Your current hatchlings for sale are pretty, but they all have older genes that are 7-10 years old. A lot of players either have plenty of dragons with those genes already, or they prefer the art style of newer genes. It’s especially popular now to have dragons which have one color which matches the accents of another color — for example, Pearl Cinder has Robin accents which match Robin Blaze, like on this dragon of mine: Most older genes don’t have that kind of color variation. You also need a very tight color range for accent matching to work — often shifting just one or two colors down the color wheel ruins the effect. (Edit to clarify: this doesn’t mean that you can’t sell dragons with older genes, but it’s a bit of an uphill battle. I have some older gene pairs that make gorgeous dragons IMO, but I go in assuming that most hatchlings will end up exalted and any that become a permanent part of someone’s lair are a nice surprise.) Another thing that can help is to have an aesthetic or specific theme. Pastels, dark/spooky, and eyeburners (purposefully loud/garish dragons) are perennially popular, and so are flight reps — green/brown Nature dragons, yellow/gold Light dragons, and so on. You can get more specific than that — my most successful pair in terms of effort/cost to profitability are my lava snappers/obelisks, probably because people can go, “Hey, those dragons look like lava, neat!” You might find it useful just to browse around Dragon Sales, Find a Dragon, and also Dragon Share just to get a sense of what kinds of dragons are popular and get ideas for future pairs you could put together.

As someone who sells dragons solely on the AH and doing absolutely zero advertising (no signature links, no hatchery, no dragon sales/find a dragon threads) -

The visuals will matter a lot, especially for things you can't change. In this instance, every color of the dragon, including the three colors the dragon has and the eye color.

If you go for colors that are bred a ton, such as XXX dragons, especially common colors like Obsidian or White, then they will move super slowly unless they have a desirable genetic combination, such as new breeds or genes that aren't done very often. So you need to find desirable colors that people don't breed a lot of (XYZs that don't match, but have only 2 dragons that exist with those colors, for example, aren't worth big ticket money).

For your example Coatl the green eyes are going to hurt a bit. Someone may ignore them (it's easy to cover the eyes with apparel) but most of the time people like when eyes match the dragon. If you want dragons to sell and don't plan on renting nests, then going for more color themes that match Nature eyes would be a good place to start.

But even then, it's up to the whims of buyers. My XXY Black/White Sandsurges sell extremely consistently on the AH. My Midnight/Overcast/Stonewash Gaolers, which, in my opinion, look amazing, hardly ever sell at all.

Patience will be necessary with selling dragons. You may very well need to relist listings multiple times until something goes. Even the most popular hatcheries exalt a lot of their dragons, just because interested parties aren't looking at that time.
