TOPIC | Why do people exalt dragons?
[i][b] Probably not a smart question to ask, but I'm actually curious, seeing as some people ask for others to not exalt their dragons (Not that I intend to.) so I was just wondering why exalt them in the first place. Do you get any benefits from it or something? I know you can get treasure, but you can always do Fairgrounds to get a bit instead. -Curious bean

There are many reasons why people exalt dragons! A primary reason is for treasure, as the fairgrounds has a cap of 75kt a day while exalting dragons has no cap. Training dragons can be incredibly profitable, and you can't make all of that profit while just using the fairgrounds.

Another reason is for dominance; the more dragons you exalt, the higher your flight will be on the dominance board. Flights will plan dominance/profit pushes, and many of the members of that flight will exalt as many dragons as they can to try and get to the top of the dominance board to get the marketplace and lair expansion bonuses that it provides.

Exalting dragons is also the only way to permanently remove a dragon from being accessible, so some people simply exalt dragons to raise the prices for other dragons with similar characteristics.

Additionally (although basically nobody exalts solely for this reason) exalting is good for the site! It's the only way to remove dragons from the game, since there isn't any kind of aging or death mechanic, so each dragon exalted is data that the site servers don't have to store anymore.

It's also a soft floor on the value of dragons. Since each dragon can be bred indefinitely and never age or die, there is an infinite supply of dragons with very few exceptions (mostly G1 Imperials). The exaltation price of dragons guarantees that each dragon on the site will be worth, at minimum, exalt price, since very few people would want to sell a dragon on the auction house for less than the price they would get for simply hitting the exalt button.

There are also user-made challenges that require exalting dragons as part of it, such as the variations of the Nuzlocke or Pinkerlocke challenge. You can check those out on the forums. Some of them are really interesting!

@Erythery I've written about this in depth!

I would say that there are three big main reasons why people exalt dragons: profit and Dominance points as mentioned above, but also simply for lair space. You ever get tired of a dragon, no sense paying to keep it around when you can free up that space for something else!

It's worth mentioning that those 'do not exalt' requests on dragons are not actually enforceable. Once a dragon is in your lair it is yours to do with as you wish, so don't feel obligated to hang onto it forever.

Something I haven't seen anyone mention here is Lore Reasons. Per site lore, exalting is supposed to be an honor. Yes, it removes the dragon from play, it scores toward Dominance, etc, but from the game lore perspective, it's considered an honor to join the ranks of whatever Flight deity it goes to. Some other users I've seen have worked it into their clan lore as a survival of the fittest thing, or a whole host of other reasons.

Personally, I only exalt those I've bred myself, or those I've bought for the purpose of exalt which isn't terribly often (those also get a shot to go to a new home in the adoption threads). Because of what Cynictis mentioned, where the "do not exalt" honestly means squat because once it's yours, it's yours and you can do what you will with it, I've written it into my clan's lore so that it's not a disappointment to find that one of mine has been exalted. I've even worked it in so that "Unnamed" isn't a disappointment, because people like to get their panties in a twist over that too.
