TOPIC | Breeding questions about color!
So I finally settled on a project: an XYY coatl! Coatl Starmap / Bee (preferably) / Runes Stonewash / Ice / Ice Ice Eyes (there's only one specific dragon like this, but I think it's a permadragon, and there's nothing on AH from what I've seen with similar colorings+genes) I've done my gene research. I know that almost all of the traits I want are available easily in XXX babies of some hatcheries. Breeding in Starmap and Bee (or whatever) should be easy if I get the right dragons along the way (because it's easy to get the rare-tier genes and cross them with each other, and then its just a matter of RNG-ing until I get that gene). My question is about colors: I'm sure I can manage to find XXX ice coatls (and pay their prices), but going from XXX to XYY (particularly getting Stonewash in WHILE keeping ice in the other slots) is where I'm confused. I compared on a color wheel and stonewash, my desired color from my primary, is a ways away from Ice, where most easily-available parents seem to be. For breeding in the Stonewash primary, what parents should I start with? Should I get something on the other side of the colorwheel from Ice to somehow hope that I get closer to Stonewash in the middle? Should I get a parent with a color closer to Stonewash (except then I'd have to deal with all of the colors between ice and Stonewash..) Anyone have any suggestions about how to go about this project? I'd appreciate any!

@Sillette
Here's an AH search to help you start with.

since there's no X/Ice/Ice available for sale that will get you a wide enough range to reach stonewash with an XXX ice, picking a pair that's X/Ice/Ice - X/Whitish/Whitish with a close range will probably be the better starting point. Genes can be narrowed down or changed later, just make sure to Assay bloodlines so you're not spending money on an unbreedable pair.

@Anourou Thanks for the response and the AH setup! I hadn't thought of it like that, and starting with off-XYYs does seem like a better and cheaper bet.

This really clears things up about the colors! And the tip for assaying bloodlines helps too, I was worried about relations messing me up. Thanks again!

@Sillette I wouldn't bother with breeding XXX Ice and would stick with XYY ice with blue-ish primaries. There may not be any with Stonewash, but there may be something with Stonewash in the range. Introducing anything else into the secondary or tertiary drastically reduces your chances of getting the correct color combination. You can always test out your odds with different pairs with this hatchling predictor. I'd also recommend gening and breed changing yourself. It's expensive, but it's probably faster to save up than it is to play the luck game with sub-par colors and 35-day cooldowns. This guide has some good tips. @Kasael, that is a fair point, I'll be giving the breeding with XXXs much more than a second thought!

My issue though with the dragons would be that they're spirals though. :( I think the breeding chart puts them in the Common bracket, so it'd be tough to get a coatl out of a pairing between Spiral and Coatl.

My thought was to breed either Coatls or Wildclaws together, both are rare so the wait times are long and that narrows my color pool a bit, but it's cheaper than a 2mil treasure coatl change, and the chances of the hatchlings being Coatl are 50/50 instead of 1/99 when crossed with a Spiral.

I do wish I could start out with them though! Would make chasing down the colors easier. ^^;

I know 2kg seems like a lot, but if you max out the Fairgrounds treasure cap with Glimmer and Gloom every day (15-20 minutes a day, using a guide), you can get a Coatl scroll in less than a month. It also opens up your mate choice a lot, since you wouldn't need to breed with Coatls at all, which means you're going to find the right colors much much sooner.

At the very least, if you do try to breed for every aspect, maybe don't use a WC parent. Using that hatchling predictor, a Coatls-only pair with a Splash-Denim primary range and everything else correct (so, pretty ideal) has a 31.84% chance of hatching your desired hatchling; with a Wildclaw parent it plummets down to 17.93%. The sweet chance at a 5-egg nest is largely offset by the 50% chance to get the wrong breed. You might find mates slightly faster, but it's still a big gamble.

At the end of the day, it's your decision whether you want to invest time or money. But it's easy to get frustrated and lose interest with really time-consuming breeding projects, so I'd still go for the money option.

@Kasael, when you put it like that, you're not wrong. I already do the Glimmer and Gloom (I only started playing again a few days ago so I'm still building things up) to max cap, but it's much more than I ever saved up. I suppose I can think about doing that. But it makes me wary if the price of a coatl scroll will stay the same in about a month's time.

I never have great luck with nests, so that's probably a good point. And you're right, I often lose interest and would rather the money option. But since I have to breed it, I was thinking I'd have to go the long way with breeding. Going the not-coatl-with-coatl-scroll route does sound interesting and easier to do.

@Sillette coatl scrolls are always in the gem marketplace so their price stays constant! no need to worry about the price changing :)

good luck with your project!
