I've been wondering about this for a long time. You know, there's elemental eggs that will hatch into one of the four starter breeds of dragon, and there are also Bogsneak and Nocturne eggs, but why aren't there eggs for other dragons, like Coatls or Skydancers or Ridgebacks?
Other dragons like coatl, skydancer, and ridgeback originate from gene change scrolls. You have to breed these dragons. There is no such thing as an unhatched coatl, skydancer, or ridgeback egg (but I honestly wish there was)

When unhatched eggs were introduced into the site, it was decided to use the same 4 dragon breeds that you could select from when creating your first dragon, probably as a way to 'replace' the progens that so many had exalted back then, and with no progen restoration program in place.
all other breeds were acquired by breed change scrolls until Night of the Nocturne was first introduced to fill in December's Vaccant festival week, and the Nocturne eggs were a way to introduce the new limited breed, along with the breed change scrolls that dropped from the special events
and then it was similar with the Bogsneaks and Baldwin's bubbling brew,
basically the eggs seem to have been introduced to generate interest in a specific area of the site with a new breed, or a special way to fill in something that wasn't there before.

Thank you guys for your answers! I just wish there were more type of eggs. I can just invision exactly what a coatl's would look like...

ArcaneShadows - egg appearances are entirely based on the area the dragon is laid in, except for bogsneaks and nocs, so if its a fire coatl, it would look the same as a fire mirror. the only reason those breeds have eggs that look different is because they're special items.
also, the reason unhatched eggs you find only hatch into the starter breeds is because they are the common breeds and other breeds are meant to be more rare
