I have referred both my friend and my sister to this game, and I believe that you get 50 gems one a referred player buys their first pack of gems, and a small gift afterwards. :)

bzb12345 the 1 gem per day is the daily bonus for keeping your clan above 80% energy for at least three days straight. if the energy bar goes under 80%, you lose the bonus, and will need to keep your clan above 80% for another three days to get it back.
referral does nothing but give you gems every time the referrer buys gems via Paypal. the first time you get 50 gems plus gems equal to 1% (if i remember right?) of the amount they bought. each time after is just the 1%.

AisDareth The 1 gem a day is your well fed bonus and nothing to do with referrals. You get that for each day you keep your dragons above 80% energy.
For referrals you get 50 gems when they buy their first set of gems and a 1% bonus of each package they purchase after that. So if they bought 500 gems you'd get 5 gems.
