@solomonsong
Food makes Goo (rainbow colors)
Materials make Ooze (rainbow colors)
Apparel makes Slime (grey/white/black)
Familiars make Muck (copper/silver/gold)
Trinkets make Sludge (rainbow colors)
So if you throw in a Trinket you'll always get Sludge. The color is random, and doesn't depend on the rarity of the Trinket you use- you'll always have a 50% chance of green, or whatever the ratio is, so just use the cheapest and most common junk in your hoard. There are a few Baldwin threads in the Guides forum, such as this one, but honestly there's no strategy to transmuting other than remembering what type makes what.

Baldwin only accepts Food, Materials, Apparel, Familiars, and Trinkets in his brews.

This is a pretty thorough brewing guide. I've been using it to help not only myself, but others who aren't sure what level certain recipes show up at. And it's good for finding the raw items Baldwin sometimes asks for.
