So I just blew $100+ on a costume that didn't even fit me.
The problem is, every Halloween I HAVE to go in costume, seeing as it's one of the only ways I can get away from being my miserable self.
Any ideas for cheaper costumes?

A simple one (that I personally am doing) is just dressing up in fuzzy, big clothing with some colored goggles and calling yourself Mothman
some black wings of any kind aren't necessarily needed, but are preferred

Do you have any particular fandom you want to represent?
If there are any thrift stores open in your area, you might try and hunt there for some oddball clothing items that can be compiled into a costume.
If money is tight you might want to stop by any of the bazillions of costume shops and pick up some cheap makeup if you want to do any sort of effect on your face and/or hair. Good cosplay-grade face paint can run quite high and needs other things to get it to stick properly.

Hey, friendly reminder to drink water, stretch, and take a short break if you can. Stay healthy! Also, don't forget about any chores or tasks you might be putting off.
Jellyfish.
Get a clear umbrella, a string of Christmas tree lights, do however you wanna do the inside of the 'jellyfish', and make the arms of it glow with the lights.
Or this, this is a good one too~

that's OK too. I was asking cuz there are some fandom characters that can be done with a thrift store wardrobe. I did the Ninth Doctor from Doctor Who, which is a leather jacket with buttons and lapels, black jeans, black shoes, and a solid color V-neck shirt for very cheap. Sonic screwdriver optional.
If you google 'cheap and easy Halloween costumes' you get a lot of results from magazines like Good Housekeeping or Country Living, so YMMV if any of those options appeal to you.
A flannel shirt, jeans, hiking boots, a beanie, a scarf, and a Starbucks cup is an instant hipster costume, unless you already live in a town full of hipsters, in which case you would just blend in lol. If you feel fancy you could use eyebrow pencil to draw in a scraggly beard.

I've seen one where people dress as a bunch of grapes. You just take a bunch of purple balloons and attach them to clothes that are all purple, and you wear a little green beret with a handmade stem poking out of it. Or there's a more minimalist route by printing out a paper template of the plumbob from the Sims and attaching it above your head.
