i know it's probably strange that i don't consider myself a furry despite drawing them primarily but i really cannot connect to the word at all! whenever i've referred to myself as a furry it just didn't feel right and i've never really been able to design a fursona i actually saw myself in.
i've been wondering why is the case and i think it's because i feel i have more artistic freedom with furries? i do genuinely really like drawing animals/animal features and i love brighter color palettes and marking and all that kind of stuff but i never really felt like i could do it as much on a human as i could on a furry. i guess that doesn't really translate into being able to see yourself as an animal?
anyways to actually contribute something other than me theorizing about myself here is a reference i did of one of my furry OCs that i made a few months ago that i'm still very proud of

i've wanted to make a fursona for many many years but never decided on a species i like the most [emoji=skull size=1] i would mostly consider snow leopard, maned wolf, or simply a longhair cat! this thread makes me want to finally settle on one and actually make a fursona after all these years...

It's more like a joke, but there is a random fursona generator [emoji=banescale laughing size=1]

I have commented on this thread 3 years ago, but I'm dipping my toes in again:
As said in my previous comment, while I draw animal-like characters, I haven't interacted with the overall fandom nor plan to. Mainly because it's massive - I like smaller fandoms better. But I do find fursuiting and such interesting phenomenons. Fursuiting could be fun to try as well.
I don't have a fursona for the moment: The one I had is a music mascot nowadays. For the design, I've been thinking of various animals, but it seems to gravitate towards Grimmsnarls. (Grimmsnarl is a Pokémon introduced in Sword/Shield). While the species is fully male, and I identify as a non-binary woman... whatever! I want to be a Grimmsnarl.
Designing is something else, given that I have ideas. The biggest culprit being: Do I want this character to have most of my IRL features, or be something I'd wish to be? That I'll think further.
Might edit this post in case I get a hold of the design.

I think you can totally be a furry without actually having a fursona. All that is require is a general interest in anthro animals!

Furries? Furries. I just made my second fursona the other day, which will replace the first. It's such a cool way to express yourself :3

Eventually I'll just DIY a signature...
I'm not one, officially, but I think animal/human creatures are pretty cool.

How do you do, fellow furries?
Main fursona is a toad, but I also have a tiger and a gir bull 'cause I'm forever indecisive.
