If you want excellent breeding mechanics, but more realism, I highly suggest furry-paws.com. Don't be too put off by the artwork. A lot of depth in the breeding mechanics, which are based on actual dog genetics, and plenty of interesting things to do. Nice economy as well.
Subeta.net is a GREAT alternative to Neopets. Unlike Neopets, which has stagnated, Subeta.net is designed well, is interesting, always has some activity going on, has a great economy (unlike 99% of petsites sob), and a fabulous userbase. Only downside: no pet breeding, more focus on prettifying your avatar than your pets. Alas and... not alas?
gryffs.com and leayph.com are very interesting games. The designs you can make on your pets are almost endless and the communities are incredibly friendly. They have battle systems and various classes for your human avatar. Unfortunately, their economies are AWFUL--Gryffs in particular has no official marketplace at all. Site designs are super esoteric as well. This ends up making the games a slog. THAT SAID, they are great for roleplaying and very satisfying to succeed in.
If you can get into Furvilla.com (it's still in beta atm), you might enjoy it. Economy is pretty poor right now, but... again, it's beta, userbase is small. Community is full of easily angered Tumblr types, so avoid the forums unless you like ****-posting. Beautiful art, plenty of interesting ways to deck out your characters, enjoyable classes. I really like it. It's soothing as well.
