TOPIC | Hardest Boss in a Video Game?
1 2 ... 5 6 7 8 9 ... 12 13
Let me see...I dunno...I remember Luca Blight from Suikoden 2 being an insane boss. You had to beat him with 3 teams of six party members, so you better hope you have 18 people equipped and leveled to fight him. Kingdom Hearts had some tough bosses too like Xaldin...he hits really...really hard.

Dark Souls needs yet another mention here because all their bosses are hard, blah. XD

And while I won't say they're difficult, Okami had some of the best boss fights I ever fought in a video game.

Elizabeth in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 - She's one of the optional ultimate bosses, but what makes her especially difficult is that there are a conditions attached to the fight and violating any of them will result in her first fully healing herself then pretty much casting instant death on the Protagonist.
  • No Persona with more than one Null/Repel/Absorb property is allowed. Only Resist skills can be used to cover any applicable weaknesses. (This includes using mirrors, tetrakarn or makarakarn during the battle)
  • No accessory that nulls any kind of Physical/Magic attack is allowed.
  • It is forbidden to use a Persona whose singular Null/Absorb/Repel property counters her own currently summoned Persona.
  • It is forbidden to use the Armageddon Fusion Spell at any point in time. (Except when her HP is around 9,999 or lower, where she can no longer retaliate after being hit)

Additionally, Elizabeth is located in the 10th level of the optional dungeon Monad, and the Protagonist must fight her alone. She also takes two actions per two whereas the Protagonist can only make one action.

Other than Elizabeth, the only hard part of this game though is at the beginning when you're really strapped for money. The rest of it is pretty easy, including the last bunch of bosses.

I don't find any of the Final Fantasy nor Okami bosses to be all that difficult in comparison. Some of the things in these games are just flat out annoying and not fun, but not to the extent of making the game hard.

@Faylon I've heard the same thing about Nocturne. I own it but have yet to play it, not because I keep replaying one of the other SMT games too much (which is also true) but because I'm completely intimidated by its reputed difficulty level. Although I've heard that Digital Devil Saga has a reputation for being hard also, but this was something I found out only after playing it. While it is true in DDS that there were some spots that I had to backtrack and grind for experience, it wasn't anything that I found to be overwhelmingly hard.

Christ, I never play video games but I have to say the battle between Cynthia in Pokemon Platinum was insane. I've only beaten her once in my life when I was like...nine? And once I accidentally popped out my cartridge when I was just about to beat her. raaaaaaage.

and because I am a weak idiot, I also found the Dialga battle in PMD: Explorers of Sky ridiculously hard. I actually used up like...ten reviver seeds before running back and needing to farm Treasure Town for a day just to get back my stores, go all the way through the Hidden Land, then all the way through the Hidden Highland, then Temporal Tower, then Temporal Spire, before I could finally flipping beat him, and only because I forced my partner to Sing the entire battle while I ate a Violent Seed and whaled on him while he was asleep.

LITERALLY EVERYTHING ABOUT THE LEGEND OF ZELDA. I'm trying to remember really hard boss battles but I remember the final boss for super mario galaxy (bowser no less) was pretty hard. I know I've encountered lots of them though. I also remember these things from final fantasy 13 that you had to fight solo with Snow and they were like invincible. Forgot what they were though.

The one boss that stands out to me as being a real pain is Thardus from Metroid Prime. I was younger when I played it (the game was for the gamecube) and I remember being stuck on it for a long time. This whole game was decently hard for me, but that boss in particular gave me a lot of grief.

To this day it's still one of my favorite games though :) Except the Chozo ghosts freaked me out. A lot.

I usually don't play games where bosses are a /big/ deal, but the furthest I ever got in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was put to a halt by the Eggman boss fight in Casino Night. The bosses are surely the most miserable part of all the old Sonic games I've played.

(This needs to be updated but I am lazy)
he wasnt that hard but saren from ME1 was annoying enough to make me really angry.... it was mostly him doing decent damage, especially with explosives that hurt you when you were in cover, my teammates going down very easily, and the fact that the stupid overheating feature put my shotgun out of use for like 10 seconds after 3 shots 8/

its one of the reasons i REALLY dont want to replay 1 lol

Seymour Flux on Mt Gagazet in FFX was TERRIBLE. I remember not being able to defeat him until I looked up a guide and even then I failed numerous amounts of times.

Xaldin/Demyx from KH2 are just a nightmare the first time you do them.

Alatreon and a lot of the other G ranked monsters in MH3U, especially the lucent Narg and the Savage Deviljho.

Controlling the Mako in ME1 was so difficult and asinine that it should have been its own boss battle.

@Xela
You're right. I guess that's what made it good though. I mean these days, bosses aren't as hard as they used to be, if you ask me.
Well, the first boss was pretty easy, but I admit, the limited space was such a pain.

Oh man, I've seen Yami from Okami mentioned and oh god I know the feel. It must have taken me 45 minutes to beat that weird fish orb up the first time I played. In the same vein, Jubileus from Bayonetta took an awful long time to beat too, and I remember Father Balder giving me a bit of trouble, but they weren't too bad.

With bosses I've beaten, I'd have to say the hardest was the stage 3 boss from Catherine because it is an utter control-swapping jerk. Sen and Ryo from Okamiden were, well, annoying, to say the least.

I've been trying to play Touhou and I'm so bad at it. I'm /so bad/. I can't even make it past the Primrose Sisters in PCB.
