Employees exposed to industrial accidents often found themselves irreversibly imbued with their own crude oil products, which had become contaminated by the surrounding Wasteland environment. The hardiest employees survived and continued working even as their bodies underwent drastic chemical and physical changes. When these original survivors had offspring, their altered traits were passed down. Despite the unfortunate circumstances which created Oil Slicks, Lightning workers view them with something like affection and pride—an unorthodox gift from the Plaguebringer! Their Plague colleagues, meanwhile, believe they possess the best of both flights, where one supplied a potent and volatile raw material and the other gave it the means to spread and thrive. Members of both flights eagerly track the spread of Oil Slicks out from contaminated sites with scientific interest. Oil Slicks constantly ooze a petroleum-like substance which varies depending on the original oil compound and proximity to the Wyrmwound at the time of contamination. At its most benign, this secretion simply trails wherever the Oil Slick goes. More often it has a tendency to spread outwards from its source and seek both organic and inorganic subjects to soak into. Ingestion of tainted oil or inhalation of fumes is hazardous and may cause illness or even death; however, if the victim is completely consumed by the oil and hasn’t yet died, their body may mutate and turn them into an Oil Slick themselves. Original Oil Slick survivors coming from Lightning and Plague clans tend to be apathetic and don't seek to deliberately spread their unique contaminant, except in controlled experiments. They'll avoid their clanmates as a basic courtesy and are well-suited to solitary work in hazardous environments. Subsequent generations have shown an increase in aggression and mental imbalance, however, due to being imbued with their parents' toxic secretions from egghood. Several groups have begun roaming out of their territories in the Scarred Wasteland or Shifting Expanse, spreading tainted oils to other regions under the brusque claim "for science". There have even been reports of Imperial cults banding together in hopes of creating an Oil Spill emperor of disastrous proportion. Despite their hostility to outsiders, these feral Oil Slicks find safety and strength in their own numbers and are lax about the territories they share. Oil Slicks are relatively benign to Plague and Lightning lands, which are naturally barren and well-equipped to deal with their secretions. Earth territories rich in natural crude oil reserves are prime targets for Oil Slicks looking to spread their taint. They present a significant threat to complex ecosystems in Water and coastal regions, where a passing Oil Slick can contaminate entire marine and wildlife habitats. An Oil Slick will never approach any Fire territory, however; the smallest flame is enough to ignite its chemically volatile body, burning it alive and sending noxious smoke into the air for days or even weeks as its oil reserves are depleted. Controversy: Since their accidental creation, Oil Slicks have been the subject of political and environmental debate between flights. Lightning clans believe they have a right to employ Oil Slicks and their offspring both for their hardiness as workers and for the petroleum they secrete, which can be collected and used as fuel. Surrounding flights have ceded this right on the condition that Oil Slicks register with their clans and have strict restrictions placed on their travels. However, when later Oil Slick generations began ignoring these regulations, widespread outbreaks occurred well beyond agreed quarantine limits. This brought outcries against both Plague and Lightning flights, who had been expected to contain their subspecies, and suggestions were even made to employ Fire flight dragons to exterminate potentially dangerous Oil Slick groups in "controlled burnings". This was met with vicious backlash from original Oil Slicks, whose grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the subject of dispute. Ultimately these plans were never carried out, due to concerns about toxic smoke emissions as well as ethical implications. Today, Plague and Lightning flights continue to offer shelter to their subspecies. Lightning clans are developing methods of containing Oil Slick secretions, using floating booms in Water regions with moderate success. Plague clans remain divided on whether to encourage the spread of Oil Slicks according to the Plaguebringer's philosophy, or to help their Lightning colleagues contain them. Plague scientists are hopeful about recent experiments using oil-eating microbes, which in combination with Lightning equipment could prove a safe and reliable means of cleaning up Oil Slick contaminants. Controversy:
Since their accidental creation, Oil Slicks have been the subject of political and environmental debate between flights. A particularly favored tactic features the covering of the head and limbs with the ambusher’s wings to better mimic a mound in the dry and cracked desert ground. The muted greens of their spines only serve to enhance the illusion as well, resembling the tough and spiky desert plants that are endemic to the subregion. Due to the efficiency of their appearance, Scrubstrikers are some of the Highland Scrub’s most hardy survivalists. Their ability to blend seamlessly into the desert environment means they are often able to borrow at will (between patrols, of course) from outside flights or rival lairs without any fear of repercussion. As a result, Scrubstriker dragons often tend towards more prideful natures, particularly in regards to their physical traits. Unlike more typical vanity, however, flashy colors and patterns are seen as undesirable- even distasteful. Instead, the more drab, worn, and dirty a dragon’s appearance, the more highly esteemed they are among the subspecies. Other: This subspecies must have Lightning eyes. Because they are among the smallest and least threatening of the Lightning subspecies their bodies have developed in a way that makes them blend in with their home environment. Their tough, slightly wrinkled hide protects them from cactus needles while their wings can be folded or expanded to mimic the shape of the flowers they protect with their spines. They take refuge among the cacti of the Shifting Expanse during the day using their grooved skin and waxy looking wings to disguise themselves as budding cactus flowers as they sleep nestled among the spines. While asleep minuscule amounts of electricity escape from their bodies and stimulate the plants to grow much faster and larger than normal. When Night time reduces the desert heat they awake and begin their work spreading young cactus buds from their home patch to other suitable areas on the Expanse. They work from July to September spreading these new buds and seeds in secret but spring time is when they become most busy with pollinating cactus flowers of mature plants. During the autumn months they harvest the fruit and pads of the cacti and send large shipments of the crop to local processing facilities to be prepared for sale and consumption. They worm their way out to the tips of the spires and absorb the electrical energy within their bodies (which have evolved to manage the bursts of energy), after which they then make their way to a spire that is picking up less electricity and deliver the excess to. This way the power stations that are getting less energy can recoup their losses much more easily. If a spire is dangerously low on power, a hoard of spirals can band together to span the length of a gap between the low-power spire and one receiving more energy. When the lightning strikes, it channels along the bridge of spirals to the low-power spire much faster. They work in very rapidly rotating shifts. Scrubstriker
KEPiYaB.png

Breed: Ridgeback

Primary Colour: Beige - Soil
Secondary Colour: Beige - Soil
Tertiary Colour: Forest, Swamp

Primary Gene: Ripple, Speckle
Secondary Gene: Current, Freckle
Tertiary Gene: Glimmer

Lore: As the appointed silent guardians of the borders of the Highland Scrub, Scrubstrikers rely primarily on their camouflage to stalk and take down intruders and enemies alike.

Secondary Colour: White - Platinum, Blue - Aqua, Sand - Stone
Tertiary Colour: White, Blue - Aqua

Primary Gene: Crystal, Iridescent
Secondary Gene: Facet, Shimmer
Tertiary Gene: Circuit, Spines, Underbelly

Lore: This species is known for hovering and attaching itself to the pillars of electricity in Lightning lands. They have been said to have emerged directly from the Spire itself, but they seem to materialize out of any conduit. Their coloration helps them blend in and watch over successfully constructed electricity farms. Their only giveaway is their piercing blue eyes, which watch any dragon that passes by. The most common species seen doing this are Skydancers.

Shifting Grandfolia
pVmpExA.png

Breed: Fae, Nocturne

Primary Colour: Forest - Avocado
Secondary Colour: Carmine - White
Tertiary Colour: Banana - Sunshine

Primary Gene: Ripple
Secondary Gene: Shimmer
Tertiary Gene: Spines

Lore: Shifting Grandifolia are an elusive species of dragon. The Shifting Expanses cactus fruit industry flourishes under their care and vigilance.

These electrically-charged robots are the result of this. Known as Teslas, they are abandoned creations born from the lightning that courses through them. Their metallic bodies are aglow with electrical energy, ready to be unleashed to attack or defend. These creatures have no sense of judgement, emotion or belonging, even to their own kind. They are as primal, wild, and relentless as the lightning that gave life to them. If a Tesla dragon finds a Tesla Coil Spiral, it will pick it up and try to use it. These large, powerful dragons are responsible for creating the telltale claps of thunder that herald an approaching storm. Each Thunderhead has a different approach to creating his or her own thunder--it is a science after all--and each boom is as varied as the dragons that create them. Some Thunderheads prefer to do belly flops, flying up high and then smacking their bellies onto the ground, their mouths parted as the sound resonates in their gut before coming out as a loud crack. Others prefer to wrestle with one another, combining work and play into a display that would make for a stunning show if it wasn't so loud. Lore: Warning Lights are Stormcatcher Industry's emergency alarms, released around the Tempest Spire whenever the need arises. Their crystal hide is to catch the eye, and their wings flap at frequencies resulting in a high pitched noise so that all dragons can be alerted regardless of hearing or sight disabilities. The ripples in their wings are resultant of the fast flying, centripetal force pushing their blood to the outer edge where it solidifies in rounded patterns. Each color represents a different emergency and each Warning Light can change color as needed; orange for fire, blue for flood, yellow for electrical issues, green for computer viruses, and pink for biological outbreaks. Each alarm comes with protocol listed in the training manuals for the safest method of dealing with the situation. Warning Lights are always on call for work, a chip embedded in their fins alerts them immediately when anything malfunctions, so clanmates may have issues finding them if they have to leave in a hurry.

Other: The okapi tertiary color must match the ripples in the peregrine gene. Colours must by XXY. This subspecies must have Lightning eyes.
