I think the issue with the salt and the gravel specifically is that they look too soft, whereas they should probably look more coarse.

Which is why fewer people have issues with the sand, because sand can be very soft and fine.

I understand the disconnect but also it's not going to ruin my day if the staff had more important things to do than fix this.

I think you nailed the exact reasoning why people find the new art so jarring (besides the coloring of course)! The salt and gravel look more like a fine powder in this new art as opposed to a pile of salt crystals/small rocks. If they’d made the lineart a little more jagged for these two I think more people might’ve been happy.

Never put salt in your eyes.

A clump of frigid snow. It does not appear to melt, even when placed somewhere warm. This can be traded at the Festive Favors shop during the Crystalline Gala.

This handful of small rock pieces and dirt is nothing spectacular.

Some dragons ingest sand to soothe upset stomach, others build castles with it.

The new designs all look too bulbous! I liked the pointy piles!

I think it’s a problem of scale - the old art looked like small piles, but the new art looks like very large piles - else it wouldn’t be rounded on top like that. But it was always going to be hard to find a template that works for three distinct materials and I think they did a good job.

The sand is very much an improvement and I understand the disconnect with the salt and gravel. They could benefit from maybe some darker and lighter spots like the original gravel had or some more aggressive lines to make them look less soft... but also it's not going to ruin my day if the staff had more important things to do than fix this.

you coulda told me the new art for gravel is art for a new ash material and it would never even occur to me to question it. Gravel is coarse and angular and rough. it only looks like in the new art when you have a huge pile and look at it from a distance. but when you're trying to show what something is, the small pile of more distinctive shapes is better.
The impression of it being as is not helped by the orange sky...

It's interesting to see how more attention to detail is used for the backgrounds, I do sorta miss the older versions, but am happy for the style update
