Flight Rising Discussion

Discuss everything and anything Flight Rising.
TOPIC | bipedal vs quadrupedal
Setting aside use of wings, and discussing purely terrestrial locomotion:

quadrupedal: aberration, bogsneak, coatl, gaoler, guardian, mirror, obelisk, pearlcatcher, ridgeback, skydancer, snapper, tundra

quadrupedal/serpentine: imperial

obligate serpentine: spiral, undertide

facultativly quadrupedal: fae, nocturne, veilspun

bipedal walking: wildclaw

bipedal hopping: banescales

Wildclaws and banescales are the only dragons I can see being fully bipedal, although I do like to imagine that banescales do use their wings like bats a lot of the time. Nocturnes and skydancers can probably get around just on their hind legs, but I don't imagine they'd move at much more than a leisurely pace. That being said I think any dragon breed can stand on their hind legs (aside from undertides for obvious reasons, but they can rear up like snakes). Or at least in my lore they have to, otherwise I think it would make their day jobs difficult. [emoji=guardian laughing size=1] Faes and spirals I don't see spending much time on the ground in general.

A cropped image of the Hall of Armor Scene. There is a long hall lined with sets of armor modeled after Coatl dragons on the left and Guardian dragons on the right. Sunlight streams in from windows on the left side.
I imagine Fae as running around a lot like squirrels - on all fours when they need to go fast, but they can sit up or even stand pretty easily. Nocturnes are like bats, but jury's out on whether they crawl like most bats or if they can get up on their wings and wing-walk like vampire bats. I think Skydancers can canonically walk on all fours or on two legs? And hey, I also have Spirals as basically never touching the ground! Unless they're asleep lol. They can motor around on all fours pretty well if they need to though.

Most other obviously quadrupedal breeds (e.g. Mirrors, guardians, tundras/gaolers, obelisks, ridgebacks) can get on their hind legs, but it's more like a dog or cat - they can't really stay on their hind legs and like... walk around that way.

And Pearlcatchers - you know how there have been a lot of cultural things throughout history that basically say "I have status and don't need to work, as indicated by this thing actively hindering my movement"? Yeah, rich/statused Pearlcatchers walk on three legs - one always holding the pearl. They can switch their pearl to whatever hand/foot they want, all four are hand-like enough to grab things, and particularly skilled Pearlcatchers will switch or juggle the pearl around as they walk. Less statused/more practical Pearlcatchers hold it in a pouch or wrapped in their tail so they can walk on all fours.

I don't think Fae really walk much. They can like sit and stand, but I think they just float around.

Nocturne, Wildclaw, and Banescale walk on 2 legs. Banescale probably also knuckle walks with their wing wrists too but are just fine on 2 legs.

Undertides are fishies. They just flop.

The rest are on all fours. Bogsneak gives me monitor lizard walk/running vibes.

I imagine most walk in a wyvern-like manner, using their wings. this frees up the arms/hands for fiddling around with stuff

I think most dragons are quadrupedal with the ability to stand up on their hind legs for some amount of time, but I'll list some exceptions to that below.
 • Wildclaws are obviously fully bipedal. I also take Banescales as fully bipedal, not walking on their wings or anything like that.
 • Aberrations can move quadrupedally or bipedally; they run and sprint on four legs, but walk around on two.
 • Skydancers, Nocturnes, Faes, and Mirrors in that order are the best at standing up on their hind legs and can walk around for a fair bit of time before getting tired.
 • ...Of course, that depends on Faes actually choosing to walk instead of fly or climb, which are their vastly preferred methods of locomotion.
 • Bogsneaks and Snappers absolutely can't stand up on their hind legs; it's a little hard to tell from the art but it looks like their limbs are out to the side from their bodies, which I'm choosing to believe means they don't have the bone structure to support themselves on just their hind limbs.
 • Nocturnes rarely ever walk on the ground unless they have to. They much prefer to climb walls, trees, other dragons if they're big enough, etc. When they do walk, they do it bipedally or by walking on their hind legs and wings.
 • Spirals don't walk. They might grab onto things as they pass by to reduce the chances of hitting someone with an errant wing-flap, but calling that "walking" is a stretch.
 • Pearlcatchers might walk in a quadrupedal pose, but they rarely if ever walk with a perfectly regular gait since they have to hold their pearl. If they don't have a carrying case of some kind, most default to either choosing a limb to hold it with and sticking to it or essentially playing hot potato with it via muscle memory. Either of those options will result in a sort of stutter-step rhythm, the exact pattern of which depends on the individual. (A dragon with sufficiently good hearing could probably distinguish Pearlcatcher clanmates just by their gaits!)

Edit: As I was falling asleep last night I had another thought about this: I think that Imperials, Coatls, and Veilspuns would have significant trouble walking on just their hind legs because that's a lot of body mass to support upright without the muscles necessary to do it developed well.

In addition to my previous post I made a quick doodle on the two ways fae and nocturnes could walk: For faes, I think they walk mainly on two legs (look at pipp and [item=folded friend] For Nocturnes, i think they can rear up and stand like Higgins or walk with their wings like bats. Just to be contrary, I think I will take up the bold stance that Wildclaws are quadrupeds, despite that being demonstrably untrue.

All dragons are quadrupedal except Wildclaws (nocturnes can be either). Pearlcatchers carry their pearls in their mouths, in bags or clothing, or just run like a tripod. Fae and spirals don't usually walk anywhere, they prefer to fly or climb. Banescales either walk bipedally or crawl using their wings as legs like a wyvern, and nocturnes are capable of this as well.
