Dragon search brings up about 505 first-generation Imperials. Not all of them are part of the gene pool (made by admins or just left unbred), and people also breed-changed some 2nd generation+ dragons into Imperials (like this ancestor of one of my Imperials), so that's not really an accurate estimation. But probably sort of in that ballpark?
Edit: 1500 imperial scrolls... Nevermind!
That's not that bad though. Plenty of real-life species have bounced back from worse bottlenecks - all golden hamsters are descended from one litter, for instance. And the gene pool is actually a lot wider than that since they can mingle with other breeds.

More of a tumbleweed than a family tree, am I right?

I'd say it's more of a 'wreath' ;)

Honestly, if Kasael has the right numbers up there, Imperials as a whole aren't inbred. They came from a bottleneck, but crossing an Imp with a Common breed will still give you another Imp in every 10 hatchlings; the Uncommons give one out of four. Plenty of Imps with one non-Imp parent hatching out there.
I'm sure there are a few European-royalty-style bloodlines (especially in breeding projects), but it's more that every other breed is genetically diverse to a degree that's physically impossible in real life, what with entirely unrelated bloodlines appearing out of thin air every month.

The KS page gives a good idea how many imp scrolls should exist at the minimum. Almost half of the imp scrolls in existence have been used on a G1. The rest have been used on G2+ (I've seen scrolled G3 imperials!), are on both active and inactive accounts, and finally some might have been redeemed!
