honestly, i think they do breathe through those gill-like things on their armpits. i never thought of that before, but i like it. it gives them a more "plague-ish" appearance, i guess

I accept the nostrils hidden by the fins headcanon. They also breathe out of these nostrils, not their mouths or the mysterious face nostrils given by Scales. Having the breathing apparatus in an unusual place and protected by those rigid fins gives them an advantage. This way, they can bury their faces into their food without the possibility of suffocating. And, they wouldn't be able to be strangled because air isn't traveling through the throat.
