Conspiracy theory time: What if they decided to lower all other valuable drops (eggs, familiars etc) to ensure that people wouldn't exploit the extra turns to get valuables? Food for thought.

I doubt it, the point of the extra turns was to make up for the lack of nature chests drops. It's not exploiting to use the turns normally.
