I still have both of mine and they are fully gened now.
My custom progen:

I am not sure what to do with her I have been kinda "meh" about her for quite a while now. I made the newb mistake of scrying her as an imp and can't get it out of my brain now.
I actually went and found a windy imp girl with the same colours and will eventually figure out some lore to connect the two together. I still need to gene the imp though.

I had a passionate dislike for him right from the beginning. I constantly pondered just exalting him but I finally found genes that I liked on him and made him one of my first Coli grinder/trainers. Now he is one of my favourites and has some of the most complete lore (still in my head) out of all my dergs. He is a pretty strange and scary fellow. Don't let his size and looks fool you. ;)
I will never part with him.
It took years to get to that point though.
So all you newbies... don't loose hope in your randoms right away. They may grow on you. :)

My custom is a handsome boi (destined to be even more spoiled, hopefully, as he needs Petals and Stained) and fills the role of my slightly deranged clan leader.

My random is the reason I am destined to never have any gen1 luck again in this game in my life. I've kept 2 of their kids and one of their grandkids (their firstborn daughter was XXY Obsidian), and am hoping to get a third keeper when I breed them again on my 2nd FR anniversary!
If you do choose to exalt your progens, the new exalting recovery system allows you to get them back whenever. so even if you don't have the funds or desire to do anything with them right now, you can exalt them without the worry of losing them forever.

I picked Violet for my custom's primary not knowing what it would look like with most genes, scried him with every possible gene combination and nothing satisfied me, so I left him triple Basic and put a skin on him. (If he'd had a different secondary and tert I would have been OK with the Violet.)
My rando had Spring/Shadow/Grey which is as awful as it sounds. I did a scatter and she became Magenta/Thicket/Eggplant, which Baldwin turned into an awesome eyeburner, but as my lair got full with other eyeburners I got tired of looking at her.

So for the sake of lair space I decided to exalt both of them, but I bred them one last time before they went off, and they gave me a pretty girl who had two genes, so I gave her a third gene, turned her into a Bog, and she's in my lair and I have a little about her parents in my bio as a way of remembering them.

I am pretty attached to them, but I don't know what to do with them lore wise if I change flights, which is something I've considered on occasion.
