TOPIC | "Shade-touched" Dragons
It seems like a lot of people have dragons that are affected by the shade in some way and I'm curious to hear other peoples' headcanons about:

How it happens / what causes it / what possibly fixes it
Impacts the shade's influence has on the dragons health or appearance
Clans' attitudes towards those with obvious shady issues
I want to start incorporating the shade into my lore more since at this point it's sort of one of those things I personally just gloss over and I'd love something to build off of since canon doesn't really give us much more than "it's dark and bad" [columns] [nextcol] This is my current shady candidate. I know for sure that the shade has changed the colour of his markings and potentially his eyes but I'm not really sure what else. [/columns] [sub](I'm reading all replies but probably won't respond to everyone I'm sorry!)

I want to start incorporating the shade into my lore more since at this point it's sort of one of those things I personally just gloss over and I'd love something to build off of since canon doesn't really give us much more than "it's dark and bad"

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the game series Dragon Age, but there is a somewhat similar thing to the Shade called the Blight/Darkspawn/Taint. In case you don't know, the story is this: According to myth, some mages tried to take over God's domain, and they were sent back as twisted, evil versions of themselves called Darkspawn. These Darkspawn bred and grew in number deep underground, and when they raid the surface world, it's called a Blight. Blights cause crops to wither, sickness, and other apocalyptic things like that. When you are attacked by a Darkspawn, you can contract the Taint, which causes severe pain and suffering, and eventually death. Those who willingly take on the taint are called Grey wardens, and they have the ability to sense Darkspawn, but at the cost of a very shortened life.

Anyway, I would think the Shade is like this! But I think in this world, the "taint" of the shade would affect the dragon no matter whether they willingly take it on or not. It would cause changes to the dragon, shortening its life in some way. This could be in the form of sickness, causing it to die; changing its coloring, making it more difficult to use its colors for camouflage, causing it to be easily picked off by prey; changing the dragon's personality to the point where its actions may lead to death, whether it's because they deliberately take greater risks, or because they may turn traitor to their clan, causing the clan to hunt them down.

Furthermore, shade-touched dragons, when they breed, can pass the shade onto their hatchlings. Because of this, any dragon that shows signs of having been touched by shade are usually killed or imprisoned at the first sign to prevent proliferation.

@brit Seirbigh is I guess kind of shade touched, though it never outright says it in her bio. For fixing it I just had Angelheart who might have some sort of power, as for after effects Seir is a bit on the nervous side, and the clan is pretty sympathetic. @Cheeseburger Yeah I've played a little bit of dragon age! (Not enough to get that far into the story though haha)

That's a very neat way of looking at it tho :o I think it'd be kind of cool to have a character in denial of it. "Oh man, my hair's turning purple. Puberty sure is weird." "Man i've been coughing up a lot of black goop haha.... It's probably... just a cold"

Honestly, the fact that they're ignoring it probably could be one of the life-shortening symptoms! They'll deny help and let the shade eat them from the inside out. They could be absolutely rotting inside, but ignoring it lets it fester more, causing a sooner death.

@brit my friend @Axqu's got a hella cool dragon who's infected by the Shade! Pinging you too, @Cheeseburger, because this dragon passes on the Shade to her offspring and you mentioned that. The "research log" in her bio is super cool. I want to own one of the kids one day. 0-0

@Kaelum

If you get one of the hatchlings, you'll have to be wary of it spreading the shade contamination...
