some basics are okay. it depends on the colour i guess? i think triples look good with basic primary/secondary but with underbelly. it makes them look flat its neat. dunno if that counts since it still includes a gene, but its for the greater good

My progen, Apocalypse: I purposely left his secondary gene basic because shimmer tints the wings a strange colour and any other gene would have made him look too cluttered.

Wow, I have really had this grown on me too!

In the beginning I didn't care much for genes but now I'm all "ahhh everyone must be triple gened this is unacceptable" even though I honestly would prefer some of my dragons to just be basic gened. :c Not sure why this problem occurs? To be able to sell hatchlings off a higher price?

@Gallelyphen I think that's part of it, but for me, I really think it's kinda that game mentality of 'gotta equip everybody'. Leaving them basic feels like leaving a slot unused, and it kinda hurts me. Even in cases where I actually like the way they look without better.

@kitari

I have to say, this thread really changed the way I look at the basic gene. Looking at dragons like @Scientist's lovely Imp, @Foxofwonders's beautiful two dragons, and @Sylvandyr's crazy gorgeous Skydancer just proves that less can most definitely be more. It inspired me to go to the AH and look up some ungened dragons myself! The fun part is the color combos, anyway, isn't it? Because you can always gene or ungene a dragon, but getting those perfect colors is the biggest challenge.

I went to gene up my custom progenitor, but everything I tried on him just looked...wrong. I made a dragon I really liked as he was, and everything I tried in the scrying workshop made Increase not look like Increase anymore. So he's staying ungened forever; because I don't want him to go on having all his children exalted, I stopped breeding him, too. Part of me feels obligated to put genes on her to make her babies more valuable, especially now that she's got a TG mate, but I'm more or less resisting the urge. I may give her Stripes, but I honestly feel that putting any primary on her would ruin her. He's a themed dragon and while I will be adding a circuit to bring out his lovely white tert, his basic double obs just looks so nice and clean. (And that's what fits for his theme: :P )

I've been thinking about this recently, because I didn't like the look of any genes I previewed on this girl: ...so I used a gene remover for the first time. Glad I did, because I found that the dark blue that comes with Splash combined with Speckle's chaotic way of throwing the colors everywhere willy-nilly broke up her outline too much, making it hard to see her eyes and distracting attention from her wings. I didn't like any other genes I previewed on her either. I like how the dark blue of Splash matches her eyes, but the way the genes rearrange that color turns out badly for her overall, I think. So I don't want to lose it entirely by giving her iridescent, but I don't want it shuffled around either. So: basic it is. :3

I'm actually seeing a lot more basic XYXs being sold with crackle as the third gene. But yeah, I have the same problem and I want to gene up everything. If it doesn't look good somehow, I want to shove those dragons out the door. It's a very expensive bad habit to have.
