this guide. You can use that to your advantage - for example, if you want butterfly (expensive), you can buy one butterfly parent and breed it with a (much cheaper) shimmer dragon for a good chance at butterfly babies.
So when you're questing for a dragon, what you'll need is a pair of dragons with the right color/gene combination to get you as close as possible. You'll breed them and, if necessary, procure another mate for their offspring to try again in the next generation.
