Agatha shuddered. Through a dreary diamond-slatted window within the monastery, the first pale beams of moonlight streamed in, casting long shadows upon the oaken floor. Three luminous eggs laid in a haphazardly arranged nest behind the Wildclaw, their forms pulsing and glowing softly against an ashen background of decaying wood. She knew when she laid them that the eggs should have been destroyed. Knew that they were likely to inherit the curse that plagued their father. . . but she hadn’t the heart to perform such a task.
Indeed, as the first beams from the full moon illuminated the thee eggs, cracks began to appear across their luminous surfaces. Blackmore hummed his approval from somewhere deep in Agatha’s mind, biding his time until the moonlight touched the Wildclaw’s form as well. Then he pushed against her, willing bone to shift and shining ivory teeth to erupt from her maw. The beast’s black fur split through Agatha’s scales as she changed; her nails contorting into darkly curved scythes. Agatha often fought Blackmore as he took control of their shared form, but tonight, there was a strange peace between them as the shift occurred.
They stood, the same massive black dog that had clawed at every wall in the monastery trying to escape. The one that had preyed upon anyone who entered the structure. . . the one responsible for the fly-laden remains and shining white bones that littered the oaken floors. But tonight, the creature was gentle. A dark muzzle leaned down to nudge one of the luminous eggs, helping free their firstborn from the confines of its shell.
These hatchlings were not confined like their parents. There were no chains to bind their forms and hold them within the monastery’s dark walls. It was a thought that terrified Agatha and simultaneously brought her hope. In their shared form, Agatha and Blackmore curled around their children, long fur keeping them warm until they slipped away in the night and were lost to the world beyond the monastery’s confines.
