Both of these guys are based on characters from "The Firebird Suite" sequence in the Disney film [i]Fantasia 2000[/i]. The former, the spring sprite, is friends with an elk, and the description of the elk familiar matches a scene in the cartoon where the spring sprite rides on the elk's antlers.
Firebird's familiar does resemble his cartoon counterpart quite a bit, and while I'm not wholly certain, the smoke gyre's flavor text does sound like a reference to the cartoon. In the sequence, as the Firebird is waking up, tiny smoke spectres rise from the rock where he's imprisoned.

Kubo from the Laika animated film [i]Kubo and the Two Strings[/i], with a beetle familiar. The beetle is the image associated with his samurai father Hanzo, and [spoiler]is the form his father is cursed into when he's accompanying Kubo and Monkey on their quest[/spoiler]. For lack of a suitable primate (Monkey in the film is some sort of macaque, which is a familiar FR does not have) or an origami (to represent the tiny paper Hanzo that accompanies Kubo on his quest) he gets a beetle instead.
