Astaroth himself is a pure soul who would never wish any harm upon his clan, however, the wildclaw soul that possesses him is another story. When he was a young child, Astaroth was fascinated with the art of necromancy, and would sneak into Lagertha, the clan necromancer's lair to secretly learn all he could. One day, there was an accident, and in his curiosity, Astaroth released the imprisoned soul of Rakshasa, a wildclaw fire mage who had been corrupted by the shade, and had devoured a great number of his kin. Rakshasa was slain, and his soul captured by Lagertha, in an effort to find a way to reverse the shade's corruption.
This corrupted soul drastically changed young Astaroth's personality, and though he fought to maintain control, the change did not go unnoticed. As time went on his physical appearance began to change as well, and he sprouted two, curling obsidian horns and gained the ability to control fire. Eventually, Astaroth began to lose the fight for dominance, and Rakshasa took over. His failed attempt to kill the necromancer who had imprisoned him landed Rakshasa in a new, mobile prison. The possession was such that the two souls could not be separated without destroying them both, so Lagertha created a pendant to weaken the corrupted soul and keep Astaroth in control of himself, but the pendant is not a perfect fix. Although Rakshasa has been weakened, he continues to whisper in young Astaroth's ear, trying to corrupt his mind so he can once again wreak destruction on the world around him, and occasionally, he succeeds.
