Lore
Seahorse dragons are typically smaller than their regular species counterparts. Timid and elegant, they scatter at the first signs of trouble. Most of the time these dragons are in small groups amongst reefs or kelp beds in shallow water. Using their powerful tails, they wrap around things to keep still in the water instead of drifting off, which is important since they are not fast swimmers. Their fins and spines vary in size from dragon to dragon, but those that are larger and longer give them a beautiful and distinctive look.
They are distinctive with their spines along their back, but occasionally some are marked with a glittering underbelly. Those that have this rare trait are alluring to others of their kind, typically earning them first pick of a mate during the breeding season. When the female lays her eggs, it is the male that cares for them, even throughout their infancy until they are ready to venture out on their own. Mates may be pair bonded through the breeding season, but may take another mate during the return of the next breeding season.
Males are usually more aggressive than females. When vying for the attention of a female or competing for a territory, they would lock tales and use their heads and claws to attack the opponent. Other traits that this subspecies possess is the ability to blend with its surroundings by changing the color of its scales as well as toxic spines (noted by the toxin gene) to dissuade predators from devouring them. As they are not powerful dragons, it is these traits that helps them survive.
