Silkspun are a subspecies of veilspun with spiderlike traits. In pockets all over Sornieth, silkspun make a living out of all manner of environments. Some roam and hunt on the move, others depend on their skill as web weavers, and others make use of unique and unusual abilities.
The records here concern silkspun classified as weavers; which variations there are, how they may be grouped, and what is known of them.

Weavers rely heavily on their silk for their way of life, and are usually the most skilled of the silkspun at spinning it. They often have customs surrounding the act of weaving, either in gifting woven crafts, expressing themselves through the curation of their webs, trading techniques with other weavers, or other such practices.
Weavers all have a need to spin silk at some point, becoming agitated or even distressed if they have gone too long without doing so. Silkspun webbing comes spilling from glands near their clawtips, and a weaver who is in too poor a condition to produce silk may still mime the action with their hands to self-soothe.
Some, like orb weavers, spin neat, geometric designs that hang flat like a piece of art. Others weave tangled, complex webs that take up more space and make sense only to their creators. Some artisan weavers will leave a unique flourish that acts as their signature. Not all weavers see the need to be quite so artistic with their webbing, as long as it is functional, but they all have their preferred methods of making it, and techniques they are more or less experienced with.
The skill of weaving is something that must be practiced to become masterful, and silkspun who dedicate more time to it may be able to create different kinds of silk. The ratio of the components of silk, as well as the spinning technique it is treated with, can be adjusted to make it:
Denser and tougher, for heavy-duty jobs
Soft and plush, often used for nurseries
Stickier, usually for better traps and prey capture
Coated and slick, for repelling water
Finer or more transparent, useful for delicate work or near-invisible silk
Dyed or iridescent, for decoration or for visual communication
More elastic and flexible, for a wide range of applications
And so on.
Note: Any lore about personality or a silkspun's way of life is not a rule for how to write your silkspun's story; feel free to deviate or maintain c:

They are naturally unflinching, perhaps a byproduct of their thorns being a better deterrent once someone has tried them. What they do with all that daring depends on the silkspun, but it has led to them being stereotyped as brash, though it is certainly not a universal truth. They adjust to a variety of environments fairly well, and are able to survive many conditions, even being able to hibernate for long periods of time in dire situations.

Black widow silkspun have black and red patterning across their body, and a strikingly red underbelly. They are proficient weavers, though to an outside eye their method of tangling their silk looks messy and unkempt. The silk they spin is strong and has particularly good stick, though they could get on with worse webbing due to their lethal bite.
[/columns]
[columns]
Their venom is among the most powerful of all silkspun, with a good bite being capable of downing a foe many times larger. A creature who does not perish from the neurotoxin may still experience the onset of severe symptoms, sometimes permanently; every muscle in the body fighting itself into a tension, a fever-pitch body temperature, and dizzying nausea.

Most are extremely reclusive, finding serenity and security in isolation. Among silkspun, the widow's reputation precedes it. Combined with them being seldom seen, they have become the center of many an exaggerated myth. Cannibals, kidnappers, maniacs, devils. Even those who usually know better may find some part of them believes in the boogeyman when confronted with a widow.
[/columns]
[columns]
A myth about them that is actually true is that parents don't name their children, instead a widow silkspun chooses its name at a nonspecific time. It is not known how far across Sornieth black widow silkspun have spread, as their lives and habits are not well-observed. They are more likely to be found in areas rarely disturbed by dragonkind. Signs of their presence include their telltale tangled webs, as well as prey husks. Widows are hearty eaters, but often leave behind skins, preferring just the meat inside.

Wind howled mournfully through the uncovered windows and over the pale rock tiles of the ruins. Kubo pulled his collar higher up around his neck, the fae's back shivering against the wall. Mostly from the dark's chill, though he was big enough to admit there was a fear creeping into his shakes. Something about this place gave him the heeby jeebies, and he was no stranger to the abandoned and decrepit. The Tangled Wood was filled with such places, and he had explored many of them and returned richer for it. He didn't want to light a fire and attract who knows what out here, at least not until he was rested and ready to face it. He settled a bit, and his tail caught slightly on a particularly thick tangle of spiderweb.
"Do you mind? Gross," he muttered, ripping free with a little more force than he thought he should have to use. The webs were another thing. He could tell they only increased further into the ruins, and he was fairly sure they weren't made by common house spiders. He peeled the remaining wisps of sticky silk off his tailtip, getting it stuck to his claws before trying to wipe it off on the ground.
"Do you mind?" a croak of a voice murmured from the dark, shooting ice up Kubo's spine. He whipped his head back towards a shadowed stairwell, where he realized someone had been watching him for some time. After a pause, what looked like a veilspun stepped forward, the deep blacks of its coloration lost to the shadows, only suggested by the red streaking through it. She coughed and cleared her throat, seemingly not having spoken in some time.
"Wings. I see now," she said vaguely, scanning Kubo in a way he found less curiosity and more lunch. A grin flashed onto her face, and her fangs glistened in what little moonlight found its way here. She seemed to have some kind of dark liquid coating her teeth. Kubo stood slowly, his tome of spells sitting underneath his bag.
"I was wondering how you managed to make it this far in without alerting me earlier, but I see now that you have wings," she said, before her grin fell abruptly. "You must be a light flyer."
"I suppose I am," Kubo replied simply, trying to steady how unnerved he'd become.
"You're a kind of dragon?" she queried, stepping lightly forward but keeping close to the wall.
"I... yes? Yes, I'm a dragon. A fae," Kubo answered with genuine surprise.
"Hmm." She cocked her head, squinting at him, though it didn't do much. "There aren't many visitors here," she said. Most of the gravel had cleared from her voice, and Kubo thought he could detect some kind of amusement in it.
"I can imagine. Few think the Sunbeam Ruins have any structures out this far. I believe there are relics yet to be recorded here," he offered, realizing she was probably really asking why he was here.
"Mmhmm. There aren't many visitors here," she cooed, then fixed him with an intense gaze. "That's why I live here."
"I'm sorry...? Oh! I didn't mean to trespass on your home." Kubo picked up his bag, and thankfully his tome. He was having a hard time reading if she was hostile or not. "I just want to look around."
"Sure, you can look around." She smiled again. "I'll even guide you. It only gets darker from here. Come over here. Follow me." She turned her body as if to walk back the way she came, but never broke eye contact, gesturing absently with a claw towards herself.
Kubo hesitated for a moment, not at ease enough that he wanted to take her up on the offer. If she was even offering and not insisting.
"Come, come. It's relics, you said? I know of something that I think will make your trip worth it."
"Well..." Kubo faltered, unsure of how to handle this. Recognition dawned over the unnamed dragon's face. She laughed, and it was a strange sound.
"Not to worry. You won't find anything scary down there, I'm the worst thing in here" she said, entirely misunderstanding the source of his fear. That may be the problem Kubo screamed internally.
"I don't want to be rude," Kubo started delicately, "but who exactly are you?"
She paused for a long time, scanning the ceiling, before Kubo realized she didn't know how to answer the question.
"I don't have a name. Not me, personally, at least. Do you know the name silkspun?"

Cellar silkspun have lightly-colored bodies patterned with pale freckles. Their secondary traits maintain a looping, weblike pattern, but can display nearly any color. They sport long, nerve-packed antennas used primarily for sensing their surroundings. They see perfectly fine in brighter light, but their vision in the dim settings they usually occupy is rather poor. Their antennas help them maintain awareness of their surroundings, keenly aware of vibrations and movements in the air.
[/columns]
[columns]
Those familiar with their mannerisms can often pick up on the slight swaying, flexing, and thrumming of their antennas as they turn over a thought. When threatened, they may give off a piercing hiss and violently rattle their antennas in a way that is clearly understood even by perfect strangers. It is common to find many living in close quarters, sharing the same cave, ruins, or densely wooded glade in peace. These "neighborhoods" can have up to several hundred webs, each separate and private.

They are typically excellent weavers. While their venom may be slower to paralyze, their webbing can easily hold most captives for as long as needed. They are capable of producing webbing for many uses, with experienced weavers often having a technique for any problem. Newer weavers may seek out tips from expert neighbors if they live nearby, and cellar silkspun will often give woven work as gifts.

[columns]
Parents usually rear eggs alone, caring for hatchlings into adulthood. They can be found in nearly every region of Sornieth, as new adults often leave the security of their birthplace to try their luck somewhere less crowded. They are notorious hoarders, so once a cellar silkspun decides its home, they are unlikely to move again lest they have to leave behind the collection.

Many live alone, but it is also common to see them living near others, silkspun or not, and sharing resources or updates on nearby happenings. They may have strong relationships with creatures of all kinds, though their interesting sense of humor can be difficult for some to understand. Many don't seek spotlight, yet seem quite satisfied when adjacent to some kind of hustle and bustle. They have a curious habit of perching on high spots.

True to their name, these silkspun take on the hue of a pumpkin, from green to yellow to orange. They strongly prefer to live in areas with dense vegetation and are often gardeners or have a well-rounded knowledge of their local flora.

They are known to enjoy a good trick, and their mischievous streak can earn them their fair share of trouble; though they'd have to get caught first. A monkey's paw type of bargain is often a favorite ploy of theirs. While these are usually lighthearted japes, the would-be receiver of the joke may still find it useful to be on their toes.

Their venom is typically rather weak, but there is a period every year where it gains potency. They become curiously invigorated at the height of autumn, during which their capabilities and senses are elevated. Some may even tap into magical abilities and visions not accessible to them, or not as easily, at other times of the year.

Juvenile pumpkin spider silkspun are quite light and limber, and may "balloon" to forests far away from where they started. They do this by constructing a sort of silk glider, flying high into the air and then letting their craft do most of the work carrying them as the wind decides. They are not typically seen indoors, some even becoming rather anxious when inside such enclosed spaces.
