TOPIC | [Lorelocke] In The Cards (Ch 3 UP!)
The title is still a WIP i might change it :'D ----- IN THE CARDS A 52-card deck Lorelocke Welcome to my Lorelocke. It's a lot like everyone else's Lorelocke, but this one is mine. Oh also I'm using a slightly different system, all main characters were lore dragons obtained from other people, and I'm writing most of these chapters like a screenplay. In this system, death is less frequent, but when it does come up... Oh boy I'll make it count. The "challenge" here is less about the dying and more about writing chapters that somehow incorporate all the plot elements in the "hand" that I draw from the deck, since they're much more complex than the original d20 system. The posting schedule will pretty much be at the whim of my motivation and inspiration, but I'm hoping to put up a new chapter every 1-2 weeks. Please don't be afraid to post your comments and reactions to this thread, I do love to get feedback (its also very motivating towards getting me to post more!) Please don't bump or multi-post though so we can keep things pretty tidy. If we ever need to discuss something in detail let's move it to PMs. ----- Intro - Rules - Cast - Table of Contents - Interact - Credits (and pinglist) tl;dr start reading Chapter 1

RULES & SYSTEM

Lol this section is really long I promise you DON'T need to bother reading all of this to enjoy the story~

Based on the highly acclaimed and infamous lorelocke but modified to use a system of my own design that utilizes a standard deck of playing cards. I prefer my system for a few reasons:
 • I don't like the risk of death being quite that high, and so my system cuts it from 3/20 to about 1/50 chance (i think, idk i'm bad at math). Maybe that defeats the point of a lorelocke but otherwise this would just be any old lore thread and I wanna be special okay.
 • My system suggests plots that are more complex. Instead of a chapter being pure "world building" or "character development" (which imo don't make for exciting stories on their own) prompts are usually a mix of a few different elements. Honestly, integrating all the required elements into a good story is where the real "challenge" of this comes in.
 • I just like the feeling of shuffling cards. It's very satisfying.

Here's some other ground rules and setup I've done to make this as exciting as possible...
 • For the first few chapters I'll be drawing a hand of 3 cards. Once I get rolling I'll increase it to 4 cards per hand. Occasionally I may even go up to 5, which, I should note, increases the chance of someone dying. Also I'll be setting aside cards I've already drawn, so they won't be drawn again until I exhaust the deck and reshuffle. You can totally "card count" throughout the course of this challenge to predict what cards I might draw next!
 • I'm using a smaller subsection of my lair specifically set aside for this 'locke. Furthermore, all main characters were obtained with some lore already written by someone else! Predesigned characters eases my writing workload a bit and is a fun challenge and gets me writing about things I may not have thought about otherwise (it also gets me using dragons that I wouldn't have otherwise cuz if you've looked at my lair at all I have a very specific aesthetic™ lol).
 • I'm starting with a cast of three (each assigned three cards of the total nine). The cast will quickly grow as I draw king cards which correspond to a "new character." Once the roster is nearly full, kings will simply be one-off appearances for the duration of that chapter unless I draw two or more in one hand. If the cast grows to more than nine, I'll just rotate characters in and out of the list of potential options each chapter.
 • Every character has a "need" or goal, listed right smack at the top of their bio, that drives their every action and motivation. Putting a "need" at the center of a plot is something I do a lot as a writer and game master. It's also essential to character creation in my Pokémon ttrpg system, for instance. It's a writing technique I strongly recommend to every new writer.
 • The cast of this story is inherently nomadic, and will be traveling aaaaall over Sornieth throughout the story. Unless I need them to be somewhere specific for plot reasons, by default they will be found in the region of the month's current festival.
 • If it wasn't obvious already, I'm writing this with the intent that it will be read by an audience, and I want it to be as exciting for the reader as it is for me to write it. As a profession I'm a comic book creator, and feel like my art skills are stronger than my writing skills, so I do hope this will help me flex those muscles and grow.
 • The style of writing will be a mix of prose and screenplay. My usual wheelhouse is writing screenplays (it's the style I write comic book scripts in, no I don't have any idea how to make movies) so it's what I'm comfortable with and how my brain works... But there are some perks a prose style has over screenplay so I may switch to that whenever I feel like it.
 • While I like to draw gijinkas of my dragons, in this they'll be lore-friendly feral forms in this unless stated otherwise... I can't guarantee I won't change my mind halfway through though ahhah.
 • Dead dragons will just go into the hibernal den rather than being exalted so I can keep their bios intact and also I'm sentimental and a coward the only exception to this being if they are exalted in universe; in that case I'll store their bio in another dragon for the sake of posterity and exalt them to the appropriate deity... This note is not foreshadowing no no no not at all.

INTERACTION

Do you want to get involved in this lorelocke? You can!

I need:

Permanent lore dragons to fill out my cast, especially during the early stages. I'll take a donation of any dragon with at least a good paragraph of pre-written lore and backstory. Donating a character is not a guarantee I will put them on a permanent spot in the cast, but I will do my best to use them in at least one chapter. They will be safe with me, I rarely ever exalt dragons. If I don't use them after a couple months, go ahead and ask for them back. I will also buy lore dragons for 500g or less if I really like their lore. If you want to advertise your lore dragons for sale here, please only make one post and keep it short and tasteful. Simply posting a banner to your shop is more than enough, and I'll check it out.

Guest lore dragons and writers to include when the cards demand it. There will be chapters where I'm prompted to include a new character which is the perfect opportunity to cameo some other folk's dragons. To apply, make one post and keep it short and tasteful. Simply post a link to a dragon with lots of juicy lore in their bio and mention you'd like them to be considered to make an appearance. If I like them, I'll get in touch to talk details.

We pan up along one of the spires, briefly peeking into the windows of the building. Inside are endless rows of bookshelves and the occasional arcaneling scholar quietly perusing shelves or reading books. As our camera reaches the top, a magenta blur flies by and then lands atop the tallest spire. The camera settles on the wildclaw form of Lyune as she lands. She perches there, gripping the surface with all fours. Due to her legs being much longer than her arms, her hindquarters and tail are positioned high in the air. She looks a bit like a cat stretching. She pulls her wings in and her head back, inhaling deeply. Lyune: AAARRRGGGGGGHH We see scholars through nearby windows and at the base of the tower all look up at her. Scholars: Shhhhh! Lyune: Oh shut up you stuffy old bookworms! It’s your fault I’m so frustrated! Maybe if your library actually made any sense- The glares of the other dragons seem to be having an effect on Lyune. She trails off and for a brief moment seems embarrassed, then she glares back with a huff and flies off. The camera follows her flight for a bit, then leaves to travel along the cluster of islands that lie between the ice and arcane regions. The geography changes from pink grass dotted with crystalline structures to that of snow and ice. Approaching the border of the two regions is the slim gray silhouette of a skydancer. Despite his impressive wingspan and seemingly uninjured wings, he seems to be having trouble flying. His manner of crossing the gaps between islands is that of shaky leaps and weak glides rather than proper flight. Watching him a little longer, it’s clear his inability to fly is due to sheer exhaustion. Lyune enters the foreground, standing on one of the nearby islands, a few trees hanging over her and the Archives looming behind her. She’s pacing in circles and stamping the ground, testing its softness, none the wiser to the far off presence of the other dragon. Lyune: Almost makes me miss the Quarantine Zone... That weird squishy ground sure made for good napping spots... After a moment she seems satisfied enough with the spot she found. She crouches down, curls up, and sticks her head under a wing. A few islands away, the skydancer continues his exhausting journey. Upon landing on the next island, the change in ground texture seems to catch him by surprise, and he topples forward out of control, soon crashing into a pillar of magenta crystals. The structure shatters around him with the sound of breaking glass. Nearby, Lyune hears the sound and perks up. She peers across the sea and scattered islands to see the form of a dragon rise upwards from the ground, glistening pink crystals covering its body. She glances at her wing, similarly marked with crystals embedded into its surface. Her wings spread and she hurriedly flies over to the form. [columns][nextcol]Lyune: H-hey, who are you? Are you a spawn of Ietepere like-[/columns] Lucent: Huh...? Lucent fully rights himself and shakes the shattered crystals off his body. Lyune watches them fall away and sprinkle over the ground, her expression now cold. Lyune: ...Oh. Never- Lucent opens his eyes with a flash of icy blue, which catches Lyune off guard. Primal eyes are an unusual anomaly to be sure, although not entirely unheard of. Lyune: N-nevermind. Forget I said anything. Lyune flies off and returns to her spot. Lucent watches her with a blank look, his expression hard to read behind such striking eyes. He watches her curl up and make another attempt at napping, then he visibly summons the strength to continue his journey back to civilization. A few islands later and Lucent is leaping towards the same chunk of earth as Lyune’s napping spot. His weak legs don’t carry him as far as he would’ve hoped, and he takes an unplanned dive into the cold waters below. The splash once again wakes up the nearby wildclaw. Lyune: Do you mind?! Instead of yelling at a dragon like she expected, she was just yelling at a couple bubbles in the nearby water. She stares at them, expecting the skydancer to soon emerge, but the surface of the water grows still. She stands up, alarmed, and glances around for someone else to take responsibility in this situation. But she is alone; which, to be fair, is why she was hanging out here in the first place. With a nervous yet annoyed sigh, she goes over to the shoreline. Lyune lies down and makes an attempt to reach into the water with her arms, but their short length doesn’t do her much good. She raises her head, scrunches up her face in anticipation, then dunks her upper half into the icy water. From under the water, we watch her open her eyes and look around. She sees the shadowy form of a skydancer quickly disappearing into the depths below. The camera takes a wide shot behind her to watch her dive all the way into the water. A tense moment of silence passes... Lyune’s glistening pink form catches the light of the setting sun as she breaks the surface of the water, clutching the limp body of the grey skydancer. His mass isn’t much more than hers, but it’s very unwieldy, and she has trouble getting him onto shore. After a bit of shuffling, she gets enough of his body onto solid ground without risk of him slipping back into the water, letting her now pull herself up as well. After taking a moment to shake off, she grips his shoulders and drags him the rest of the way onto dry land. Lyune: Hey... Hey! Are you dead?! She holds his head in her claws and shakes it back and forth, hoping for some sort of reaction, but Lucent remains lifeless. Lyune raises her head with a concerned, far off stare. Lyune: Dear Plaguebringer, he’s dead... Her body tense, she glances behind her at the building of the Archives, then looks around for any nearby dragons that might see her with a dead body and assume the worst. She looks back down at the lifeless skydancer, now trying to decide what to do with the body, when Lucent sharply inhales and coughs up lungfuls of water. Lyune leans back with a relieved look on her face. Lyune: Ohhh thank the Eleven, he isn’t dead... Getting accused of murder was not on my list of things to do today... Once Lucent gets his wits about him and shakes some of the water out of his feathers, he gives Lyune a long, unreadable stare. A character/relationship builder with a little worldbuilding, involving Lucent and Lyune at an important location

51998378p.png79.png70010372p.png

Our camera starts at the base of the Tourmaline Archives.

70010372.png Lyune: AAARRRGGGGGGHH

We see scholars through nearby windows and at the base of the tower all look up at her.

Scholars: Shhhhh!

Lyune: Oh shut up you stuffy old bookworms! It’s your fault I’m so frustrated! Maybe if your library actually made any sense-

The glares of the other dragons seem to be having an effect on Lyune.

70010372.png Lyune: H-hey, who are you? Are you a spawn of Ietepere like-

Lucent: Huh...?51998378.png

Lucent fully rights himself and shakes the shattered crystals off his body. Lyune watches them fall away and sprinkle over the ground, her expression now cold.

Lyune: ...Oh. Never-

Lucent opens his eyes with a flash of icy blue, which catches Lyune off guard.

[br] ----- The camera pans out to view the sun dipping below the horizon. A little bit of time passes. We see Lyune, now fairly deep within the archives, having been sent on a dumb wild goose chase to track down a meal by scholars that are too lazy to give her clear directions. Lucent is trying to rest, but despite his exhaustion he seems fidgety and bothered by his thoughts. Lanata has just crossed over into arcane territory and entered the starwood strand, where she walks gazing at the trees around her with wonder. She approaches one and reaches out to feel its surface with a clawed hand, but stops herself just before touching it, a longing look on her face. Lyune experiences the earthquake first. Piles of books are thrown from their shelves as the arcane dragons inside are knocked off their feet. Outside, the ground under Lucent trembles and lurches and he officially gives up on napping, rolling onto his belly to better grip the ground with front and back claws while he looks around in confusion. Lanata looks away from the trees to watch a flock of birds that had suddenly taken to the air, startled into flight by a bright pink light bursting forth from the windows of the Observatory, and then the earthquake hits her too. As a reflex, she grips the nearby tree for support. The bark under her claws grows black and warped as she looks towards the source of the quake. Just through the trees she can make out the form of the Focal Point island steadily rising up into the air. Lanata looks at the odd sight for a moment with visible bewilderment, then takes to the air to get a better look. Indeed, it appears the chunk of earth that is the Focal Point is breaking away from its home in the ocean and rising up into the sky. Lucent cautiously makes his way around the perimeter of the Archives to the other side of the building so he too can get a better look at the anomaly. Approaching the opposite shore of the island, he climbs upon a tall spire of pink crystal. It isn’t long before the entire island has completely taken to the air, leaving empty water below. Chunks of earth and crystal break off the island and splash into the sea. A few unlucky dragons whose clans had taken up residence on the island can also be seen losing their footing and falling from the side of the island, though most manage to catch themselves on their wings in time and fly to somewhere more stable. The crystalline outcropping that Lucent is perched upon begins to violently shake. He spreads his wings in anticipation of hopping off to safety, but before he can do so the whole chunk of crystal is thrown into the air. Lyune watches through a window of the archives as, in fact, all of the crystals in the area are launched skyward in the direction of the Observatory. The opposite side of the building is pelted by small pieces of pink crystal and a window shatters. Lyrune watches in horror as the great Crystalspine Reaches start breaking apart and crumbling into smaller pieces, which are then pulled towards the Observatory as if by a gravitational pull. These crystals don’t hover calmly in the air like the Focal Point though. No, they lose little velocity in their approach, and instead orbit around the island like an asteroid field. The area surrounding the floating Focal Point soon becomes thick with spinning rings of crystal shards... And Lucent is still stuck taking an unwilling ride on one of them. From her vantage point at a window, Lyune sees the hunk of crystal whiz past her with a panicked grey blur clinging to its surface. Lyune: L-Lucent?! The sound of shattering windows behind Lyune comes to a halt as a magenta forcefield is erected around the Archives by the resident scholars, a powerful spell to rival the Astrolodome. Lyune slowly comes to the realization that she’s now trapped within the archives. The scene on the Focal Point is even more chaotic as the resident clans have been put further in peril. Falling off of the floating island is no longer punished with just an unplanned dive into the sea; rather, a dragon could be impaled from all sides within seconds by razor sharp shards of crystal. At this point, Lanata has flown as close as she can to the hazardous scene, and it’s from here that she watches as a particularly large shard careens past her with a hapless grey skydancer perched atop. Lanata: What in the name of the Eleven...? Lanata beats her wings and swoops in after the chunk of crystal, getting dangerously close but so far staying out of danger. She shouts to the other dragon. Only slightly larger than him, she could probably get them to the ground without a fatal crash landing, but could he trust her...? Now he doesn’t even have a choice. Lucent’s chunk of crystal barrels straight towards another large and extremely sharp hunk of rock. Lucent leaps away and into Lanata’s arms mere seconds before the two rocks crash into each other, spraying shards of crystals in every direction. Lanata and Lucent don’t make it to the ground completely unscathed, small bits of crystals now embedded here and there in their fur and feathers and drops of blood beginning to bead up at the sites... But their wounds are relatively minor considering the alternative. Lucent’s exhaustion finally catches up to him and he loses consciousness soon after they reach the ground. ----- Authors commentary: It was very hard to write a “world changing catastrophic event” that would actually impact our characters while still staying lore-friendly, wowie. I think I did it though. Didn’t expect to get a flush on Chapter 2 but at the same time it makes a darn good inciting incident am I right? I sure hope someone here can tell me what’s going on in the Observatory cuz heck if I know. Also, I got another lore dragon ready to go as soon as I get to add a new character, but even with a cast of four Lucent is still the only male character... 31580884.png Lanata: What are you doing?! Get out of there, it’s too dangerous!!

Lucent: I-

He pauses to duck his head, narrowly dodging a shard of crystal before it can decapitate him. His front legs scramble for a harrowing second until his claws find purchase again.
Lucent: I can’t! I-I’m too weak to fly!51998378.png
31580884.png Lanata: Jump! I’ll catch you!

By this point, Lanata has caught up with the high speed chunk of rock. Lucent stares at her a moment, judging her size as well as her character.

Authors commentary: It was very hard to write a “world changing catastrophic event” that would actually impact our characters while still staying lore-friendly, wowie.
I think I’m accidentally writing a harem manga, guys. Help.

Her first instinct is to leave through the door of the Archives, logically expecting that to be the location of some sort of exit system to the newly erected forcefield... How foolish. Of course there is nothing, and the surface of the dome there is just as smooth and uninterrupted as anywhere else. Or is it...? Lyune notices the force field has a sort of seam to it here and there. She hurries over to the closest seam and tries a hand - or rather, the extra sharp talon of her foot - at breaking it. The arcane fae pushes the window all the way open and hops through to descend to the ground below. There’s only a few meters between the outer wall of the library and the surface of the force field, but their small body has plenty of room to reach the ground without any unplanned crashes. After cursing the other dragon, Lyune runs off to get some space, leaving the scholar puzzled and offended. Lyune may have been socialized as a Plague dragon and born within the territory of the Plaguebringer... But it’s true her core being was arcane. Still, she hadn’t the foggiest idea how to perform magic, so her alignment with the Arcanist wasn’t exactly doing her much good. The pink wildclaw paces around the perimeter of the dome, hoping either to run across some lucky pre-existing hole in the barrier or to be struck with inspiration. While ruminating on the words of that rude fae scholar, inspiration indeed comes. She is literally standing outside the largest collection of knowledge on the face of Sornieth! There must be a book somewhere in there that can teach her how to undo this spell. Lyune hurries inside. Lyune already had a vague idea of the layout system of the archives, having spent all day here looking for information on the condition she inherited from her mother and the circumstances of her birth. She didn’t have much luck researching that topic earlier, but maybe she will have better luck with this new task. Luckily, it seems some of the mages who helped erect the forcefield needed to do some research of their own as part of the process. Not long after beginning her search, she finds a spell book lying out on a table turned to a page about magical force fields. She reads it over. Frustratingly, the current page offers no advice on how one would make a temporary hole in the barrier. She would need to check the index of the book for that, or possibly other spell books entirely, and she’s far too lazy and impatient for such a task. Instead, the book gives her another idea. The spell requires an object to be used as a focal point and battery of sorts for magical energy. Something in this building is powering the field. If she can find that and disrupt it, well, her escape will be a cinch. Lyune begins to scour the floors of the library. It is easy enough to avoid suspicion; if she was ever interrogated, she could simply say she was searching for a book. Nobody bothers her though, all the scholars too busy with their own research. After an exhausting few hours, Lyune is left spinning her wheels. Where could this focal object be? Frustration once again welling up inside her, she climbs to the roof to let off some steam. She had missed it the last time she was outside, and once inside she was too far away from the barrier to be able to see them, but from here on the roof she finally notices the numerous little pink particles of arcane runes drifting through the air. Watching them for a little while reveals their movement has a pattern. They appear to be drifting away from a spot in the top floor of the library and out towards the forcefield, where they finally collide and charge the dome with more power. The top floor of the library! Has she visited that yet? Lyune flies to a spot on top of a spire that lets her peer into one of the windows. The floor doesn’t look familiar... Perhaps the entrance had been blocked off to her during her search and she had never actually reached this floor? She flies from window to window until she finds one that’s unlocked, then slips inside. The air is still save for the lazy drifting of the pink arcane runes. Lyune makes her way towards their source, soon coming into view of the force field’s apparent focal point - a glistening figurine of the Arcanist carved from a crystalline meteorite, the same substance that grew inside her own body. Her next course of action is quite simple. She nabs the statuette and tosses it out a window. The dome dissolves into particles of light in concert with the figurine shattering upon impact with the ground below. As scholars inside the building scramble to figure out what happened to their protective barrier, Lyune makes her escape out a window. Lyune: Haha! So long, and good riddance! I hope I never see you and your dumb stuffy libary ever again! A large chunk of crystal traveling at high speeds collides with Lyune, tearing into her left side.
