Forgotten Poet's Tools

Welcome to yet another forever-under-construction lore thread! This is a place for me to organise my lore and to keep anything that gets too long for my front page or my dragon bios.

My lore lair is currently in two parts:

The Clan of the Songs

The Hive

The dragons of the Clan of the Songs should eventually get a proper lore story each, but for the moment most just have a brief fragment that sorta sums them up. I will list those that have complete lore in their bios in the general Clan of the Songs post.

A few of them will have "updating" lore that will change as I move about between Flights or re-organise my lair: I've given them their own posts in this thread. This will be noted next to their icon on the clan post.

The HIVE is all but finished: all of them have complete bios. Admittedly, it's a little easier for HIVE dragons as you don't need much, if anything, in the way of individual lore for them! Updates to their lore as we move around will appear on the HIVE post.

If a familiar has a name it exists in my lore canon - otherwise it's just there till we've finished picking its pockets for treasure.

I aim to have lore of some description on every dragon eventually. However, at present, anything you see in another tab or my HD doesn't exist in my lore canon... yet. The Ancient Breeds seem like a neat way to have a separate G1 collection, but I'm still figuring out what I want to do with them lore-wise, so right now they are just there.

Warnings: General warning for violence/battle scenes/minor gore, though I try to stay within the site's general restrictions. HIVE lore can get pretty icky, steer clear of that if you're not a fan of body horror, bugs or slimy/gooey Plague-type gore. If there are any special mentions, again, I will make a note of them next to the individual dragon's icon.

For the actual lore - read on, or click on one of the links above!

We are hidden.

To escape the horrors that befell us, we sought the deepest, most secret places to conceal ourselves. We chose the Sea of One Thousand Currents.

We took a piece of the Starfall Isles with us: our leader needs the magic of his homeland. Now, in the depths of the Sea, a great slab of pink rock is our home, enchanted with its own atmosphere so that the dragons of all Flights can breathe freely, and equipped with magitech propulsion systems. We have built a semi-permanent camp upon this sunken island, and when we need to move on we can simply up anchor and float away, roaming when and where we will.

Even at this depth, the Songs reach us. We can continue our studies; but, more than that, they are our comfort and our guide. Here, we will reclaim our purpose and rebuild our clan.

Cleaver

The Clan of the Songs came under attack. A traitor in the ranks gave away the subversive activities of the daughter of the Gatekeeper, and a Hive - or maybe the Hive - hunted the clan down.

They took us by surprise, and her stolen family couldn't protect her. Without her influence, the awakened Drones were easy prey for the Consciousness and their Hijackers.

Many died in the fighting, taken down by dragons they had once thought of as friends. We managed to wrestle her back from their clutches - it would be far too dangerous to let them turn her.

Although we hated to leave anyone behind, they are not the dragons we knew any more. Some say we were unwise to let them in in the first place. We must escape, and leave the unfortunate creatures to their fate.

But where can we go? Where will we be safe?

"Wait... you hear it too?"

She'd heard their story before. She'd lived it herself. For nearly as long as they could remember, she was the first dragon to treat them - not with kindness. No, better than that - with
respect.

All their life, they had heard music, the Songs that seemed to play constantly in the background of their lives. When they were little, it had been cute or funny, passed off by their elders as the imaginings of a child; but as they got older and the Songs still played, the whispers of the other dragons got darker, mocking, even fearful. Even in Sornieth, hearing voices others cannot is not a good sign.

They found themselves set apart, pushed away, or else they left by themselves. They wandered lonely, learned how to survive and became secretive, never sharing the whole of themselves for fear of being rejected again.

But now they discovered others like them - others who could hear the music. They worked together to try to learn the secrets of the Songs, travelling the length and breadth of Sornieth searching for others like themselves and for the places where the music can be heard most clearly.

In the Sunbeam Ruins, the home of gathered knowledge, the Songs were clear and sweet. But the dragons of the Light called them illogical, laughed at them and refused to help.

In the Dragonhome, close to the Pillar, the Songs were amplified, as if the great ruin drew the music down from the skies above. But the dragons of Earth saw them as mad and treated them with fear.

In the Shifting Expanse, the great rods of the Lightning Farms transported the Songs across the desert plains - until each great bolt of lightning caused an agonising burst of static. The Lightning dragons cared not for their quest - they believed the fledgeling Clan was there to steal their secrets, and drove them away.

They finally found a home of sorts in the Starfall Isles, the place of their leader's birth and where her quest had begun. In the Crystalspine Reaches the hills themselves seemed to resonate with sound, and the trees of the Starwood Strand sang with the winds that blew in from the sea. They braved the climb to the Observatory, where the dragons reacted with curiosity and took them to the Arcanist. When they spoke of the strange ability at the root of their endless searching, his reaction was, "Eh. I've heard weirder."

They pledged themselves to the Arcane flight there and then, and became a true clan. They took new names for themselves from the words of the Songs themselves, and their leader and the other founders created a set of strict, sometimes strange rules to bind the clan together and ensure that the ability to hear the Songs survives and is passed on.

They returned to their roaming. They seek others who can hear the Songs; they study the effect that the shape and character of the different lands have on the music; they look for the deep meaning in the mysterious lyrics. They hunt and gather for their food: they collect artefacts to further their research, or to sell and trade.

And all the while, the music plays...

He understood: they were creatures of the sky, and the artificial air above the little island they had built gave enough room only for the smallest Fae to stretch their wings properly. But he feared. Their clan had roused the anger of something old and terrible. They had paid dearly, but they had no idea whether their enemy was through with them, or whether there would be more retribution to come. So they hid, and they waited. But today, they needed the space and the sunlight. They needed to fly. He heard Islands' wings clatter and hiss into life, and paused a moment to watch the Snapper's lumbering, running takeoff. Then he leapt into the air himself, overtaking all his clanmates with powerful downward strokes of his wings. He caught the edge of a thermal and soared above them, watching for danger all the time. The sun beat down on the dragons aloft and on the shallow pools below, twinkling hypnotically on the water. He found himself slipping into a dream of the past... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * He had found his Charge at twilight, camping at the edge of a dusty road. There were only four of them then, sitting round a fire discussing the music and where it might come from, the little Fae trying to show them how to use it to strengthen their magic. He was never sure if it was the pull of the Search, the pull of the Songs, or both that drew him in, but he walked towards their campfire like a dragon in a dream. When he told them that he believed that he needed to go with them on their journey, the Fae had simply responded, "Yes, I believe you do". They told him their story. The Guardian and the Fae had been drawn to the little township in the foothills of the Focal Point by rumours that the area was high in magical radiation known for causing strange mutations in its flora and fauna, and that they had found the other two in the local market. The Bogsneak had a stall selling battered second hand weapons and armour; the Fae heard her humming. It took some persuasion to get her to join them, but join them she did. The blue-and-white Spiral had simply bounded over one day while the trio were discussing the rather puzzling lyrics they could all hear, exclaiming "OHMYALLELEVENGODSYOUHEARTHEMTOO?!?!?". That night, beneath a clear, starry summer sky, the five of them decided to form a Clan devoted to the Songs that had brought them together. He knew there and then the Clan of the Songs (no-one could think of a better name), though small and far from complete, was to be his Charge. They chose new names from the Songs. He chose CrystalVision for himself, for the moment of perfect clarity that had brought him here. The female Guardian chose FracturedLight, from a song she loved, for her shimmering, colour-shifting wings. The magical Fae chose HopefulMonster, from the lyrics of a song which spoke of working together to prevent disaster. He said never wanted to forget the lesson of the battle that had brought him and his Guardian together. The Bogsneak became HonestyMystery, and they all picked RioRioDance for the Spiral as she couldn't make her mind up. Their search began in earnest. As they found out just how rare their ability was, FracturedLight (no-one ever shortened her name) declared that she wanted the Clan to grow and wanted to make sure that the ability to hear the Songs was passed on. She wanted everyone in the fledgeling Clan to agree to take a mate and produce hatchlings. Those that did not hear the Songs could leave the clan or go to serve the Arcanist. Deep inside, Vision's good, loyal heart ached a little. He was never under any illusions about his own attractiveness, and as a taciturn hulk of a Guardian with a single purpose and few social skills, he never expected much more than to come to an occasional arrangement with an agreeable female. He was quite certain that he would never make much of a father. Then Fate - or possibly the interfering Wildclaw SpaceHardware - put her in his path. The most gentle, peaceful creature he had ever encountered, kind, giving and with a soft, pretty smile for everyone. Like him, she shunned impractical, unnecessary clothing, preferring simplicity over frivolous things, and like him she was devoted to what she loved - in her case, the study of the natural world. He found excuses to walk with her as she gathered plants for food and medicine, learned the names of the stars as she accompanied him on his night patrols, and discovered a new respect for the Beastclans as she took the first few familiars to join the Clan under her wing. Slowly, he began to open up to her about his hopes and fears for the Clan. She was often able to reassure him, or offer advice on what the other Clan members were thinking. Grace was the one who confessed her love first, and for a very long time he could not believe his luck. When their first nest hatched, she was filled with joy: he was filled with fear. The hatchlings were so little, so fragile. He was afraid to pick them up, at first, in case he damaged them, so instead he would stand very still as they climbed all over him. Most of his clanmates found this this hilariously funny, but Grace seemed to find it endearing. Her heart broke every time the little ones left to find their own way in the world, but none of their own children had yet hatched with the gift of hearing the Songs, and so they could not stay. That was one of the few rules that had not changed since the day of the terrible attack: one of the few things about their entire existence that had not changed. The view of their little encampment had changed: colourful tents had given way to semi-permanent structures of wood and canvas, and his beloved Grace even cultivated a little garden. His leaders had changed: once bold and daring, determined to explore every corner and welcome every dragon who heard the Songs, they were now fearful and wary. Vision suspected that this would not last. FracturedLight was too ambitious now, she wanted too much. There would be a time when they would surface again and look towards the horizon. But for now, his clanmates dived from the sky one by one, back towards the safety of their bubble. He circled once more and then dived after them, staying alert. His clan was his Charge, and he would never allow it to come to harm again. [item=Fogflower]

They needed to fly.
