NOTES ABOUT THE WORLD.

The events of my clan lore take place in a world that doesn’t stick to Flight Rising’s official lore... at all? There are some bits that I use, but honestly not many.

For starters, dragon breeds are all roughly the same size, and breed dimorphism does not exist (instead, each dimorphic trait is found on all sexes).

Familiars are seen as friends and family members, or companions and partners to the dragons. They are often close friends, and the clan works together with the Beastclans that they share their habitat with.

THE WISPWILLOW GROVE

The Syl Nadir is located in the Wispwillow Grove, where glowshrooms lie thick in the mess of tangled roots and fallen trees.

At night, almost unnatural darkness coats the air, and the laughter of faeries carries through the trees. Flame lanterns hung from the roofs and railings of treehouses light the way through the Syl Nadir’s base camp, practically slicing through the inky blackness of the terrain. Legend says that the lanterns have always lit themselves, but there are tales that claim the lantern lighters are pitch-black, spindly dragons with elongated limbs and fingers who erase the memories of those who happen to spot them.

During the day, the territory is much more welcoming. The darkness that seems to settle over the land at night fades away, tendrils of smoke curling through the air as though a spell has been dissipated by the presence of the sun. It is, by all accounts, a fairly average clan.

THE SYL NADIR

The Syl Nadir is a rough-and-tumble clan that resides in the depths of the Wispwillow Grove. Their home is located near a lake that stretches as far as the eye can see—it’s rumored that the lake was created with the destruction of an emperor many years ago, but no one has been able to confirm this to be true.

The clan’s “home base” of sorts is made up of a series of precariously balanced treehouses and platforms, kept lit at night by the occasional bioluminescent mushroom and plenty of lanterns. Dragons sleep either in these treehouses or on the forest floor below, which is covered in rotting logs and leaf litter. The nights are usually quiet, shrouded in an unnatural veil of darkness.

During the day, the Syl Nadir is as active as any other clan. From the shopkeeps loudly selling their wares to the high-pitched laughter coming from the Teahouse, the noise of the clan never seems to cease. They are still just as sharp-edged and aggressive as they were before, but with their new leader they have evolved. Their experience with the Leviathan tested the limits of the clan and transformed them into a close-knit clan, much more organized—and welcoming of strangers—than they were before.

CLAN TRADITIONS

Being a relatively new clan, the Syl Nadir does not have too many traditions yet. There are a few annual holidays that they celebrate, however.

The Festival of the Leviathan
After making peace with the Leviathan taking up residence in the lake, the Syl Nadir took it in as a member of the clan. The Leviathan showed that it was a helpful ally, and as a bit of repayment for its cooperation and assistance, the Syl Nadir began an annual tradition, complete with folk tales and almost-true stories surrounding their Leviathan. Around the same time that the rest of the world celebrates the Wavecrest Saturnalia, the clan fishes for eels and makes small offerings to their lake in return, symbolically thanking their greatest protector, the Leviathan, for its friendship.

Night of the Nocturnal
A night of trickery and revelry for the clan, this holiday lasts from dusk to dawn of the next day and happens annually in late December. For this one night, the ever-present darkness that envelops the clan seems to lift, and along with it the clan’s spirits. They celebrate all night by playing games, drinking, and eating all the snacks they can get their claws on.

Autumn Breeze Festival
To celebrate October 31st, farmers Sorrel and Acanthus set up a corn maze and decorate the clan in spooky ways.

Trickmurk Circus
Once a year, the circus comes to the Syl Nadir.

CLAN FACTIONS

Many different groups of dragons live within the Syl Nadir. Most live peacefully alongside one another, but that’s not to say there are never occasional spats.

THE SHADY BUNCH.

The Shady Bunch is the collective name for a group of dragons from clan Theridiidae who, upon receiving word that a nearby clan was beset by a monstrous Leviathan, sent aid in the best way that they could. The matriarch’s tactician daughter, Midnight, led the group of dragons to help lay the strong foundations for a clan that could stand up to the threat of the Leviathan, as well as rescue the nameless group of dragons from their distinct lack of structure. Now, the group is beloved within the clan, even among those who weren’t there to see the work done to save it.

Midnight is the leader of the Syl Nadir, and the head of the Shady Bunch. She is as frightening as she is friendly, though she is rarely available to chat between her various duties as leader. She is a hard worker, with a mind for strategy and no patience for pointless risks. She is well-respected in the Syl Nadir, and is highly invested in its safety. She, like her mother before her, has taken a consort, a pretty male to be her mate.

Dark is Midnight’s closest ally as well as her husband, and the two are often found together, with the wildclaw tucked into the crook of the guardian’s chest as she studies maps of the territory. Though not a true member of the Shady Bunch, he is often lumped in with them because he’s married to Midnight. He has no memories of the time before he joined the clan—he simply woke up one day in a shallow grave in the woods, and eventually found his way to the group.

Barry is the careful nanny of the clan’s hatchlings, whose parents are often busy during the working hours of the day. He treats them with care, and remembers each hatchling that he has raised.

Rhosyn and Barry danced around one another for ages before eventually admitting their attraction to one another. Together they adopted Ramsey, a dragon once under the fierce mind control of the Leviathan, and older than both of them, but a welcome part of the family nonetheless.

Vivace is Midnight’s younger brother and her most trusted informant.

Ceinwen is an honorary member of the Shady Bunch, and only because she plays the third wheel to her older sisters so often. She, along with her other sibling Glace, is usually excluded from the goings-on of the construction company, but unlike Glace, she hasn’t let that drive her away. She tries to help wherever she can, hoping that one day she’ll prove herself, and Pigeon and Murtz will sign her on as an official third sibling in the company.

TerminalVelocity, or Terminal for short, is the leader of the triplet Dangerbacks and the Head of Safety in the Syl Nadir. His field of expertise happens to be fall prevention, which comes in handy while living in the treetops of the Syl Nadir.

Plunger is perhaps the most unbearable of the Dangerbacks. He is obsessed with cleanliness, and frequently insults others for being filthy. However, as insufferable as he can be, this oddball has his moments.

Quarantine

THE LEVIATHAN HUNTERS.

Skilled warriors who nearly died out long ago, when the leviathans disappeared. Their rules, their duties, and their undying sense of loyalty lives on with their children—though most decided that the life was not for them. Centuries later, a total of three Leviathan Hunters still roam the lands.

Noire is the head of the remaining Leviathan Hunters. He’s an independent dragon at heart, but he quickly became attached to the clan and vowed to protect it. His loyalty is unbreakable; he will let nothing lead him astray from his duty, even if that thing is the prospect of love.

Alcyone is the magic-user of the remaining Leviathan Hunters, a soft-spoken but surprisingly ruthless mage who will do anything to defend her family.

Revyn is the tough-as-nails brawler of the remaining Leviathan Hunters. A towering brute, they appear to be one of the most intimidating dragons in the clan. But unless you’re a leviathan, they are a gentle giant with a heart of gold.

THE TEAHOUSE.

Twins Hackberry and Cauldron work together to run Chai Spy, the most cozy teahouse in the Tangled Woods. The lights of the teahouse are always warm, and pillows and blankets are stuffed into every corner—a complaint of Terminal’s, but it hasn’t posed a fire hazard yet.

Chai Spy is almost always bustling, with Marnie taking up the position of a chef of sorts; she’s more of a cook than a baker, but she’d rather make assorted cookies and pies all day than sit around doing nothing. Hackberry herself takes orders and serves tea all day, chatting with customers and occasionally flirting with the more attractive ones. Cauldron handles shipments and everything else on the back end of things, and works together with the local food providers to get ingredients.

Occasionally the teahouse becomes the best breakfast spot in the clan. Marnie sits at the stove all morning, starting as soon as the sun rises, cooking everything from eggs to grits. Then the entire clan attempts to squeeze into the tiny teahouse-treehouse for a group breakfast.

THE CASINO.

A dream come to life for a local card master, the casino is a place frequented by dragons from all over, even outside of the clan. Arianwen and Suibhne keep the place running smoothly, while their boyfriend Radiant entertains their guests. Callisto and Cloudclimber

THE GODS.

Bewitched is the sly god of the forest, twisting through the shadows with catlike grace.
He has met his husband again, and they’re trying to get their relationship to work despite the fact that one of them literally murdered the other.

Phoadite is the forgotten god of the tides, working hard despite having very little confidence or surety of his actions. Phoadite has always been the benevolent one, and while he was definitely twisted like the others, he’s recovered much easier and found his place as a Regular Old Man again, moving to the clan that Midnight and the Shady Bunch came from.

Edren is the twisted god of the fog, able to warp reality in small bursts, and with a mean streak a mile wide. It’s said that Edren’s mouth is full of teeth the size of steak knives and twice as sharp, and that her gaze can render someone immobile for as long as she wants.

Vix is the ever-hungry god of change. He is constantly starving, and as such he tends to lash out at anything that passes by. Many a creature has been lost to this titanic monster’s jaws, from the smallest sparrow to even a couple emperors. Vix has been described as a “land kraken”; if you’re wandering through the forest and notice the trees shifting a bit too much, a bit too unnaturally, chances are you’re about to meet your end. Vix doesn’t take kindly to people standing on his head.

THE PANTHEON

The Old Gods existed before the world did. Or at least, that’s what they say. Their purposes were specific and clearly written out—they were meant to help the fledgling world grow and support life. They were meant to do good. And they did, for a while.

Then the worship began, and religion began to sprout from the stories told of the gods. Their followers praised them, asking for small favors and words of advice in return. The gods were appreciative—perhaps a bit too much so.

They say power goes to one’s head, and even gods are not immune to this.
