The Hound

INFO
Past always loved the Hewn City. The mysterious ancient ruins beckoned light dragons to study them. He probably would have given up, though, if he had not met Miranda, a fae who claimed to be related to Randolph Carter, the famous dreamer and antiquarian. She grudgingly "loaned" him some letters to get him to stop bothering her. Past studied the documents for months with the help of his mate, Antiquity (who was much better at translating ancient languages). Because Past was a skydancer, he was able to pick up on some of the strange energies mentioned in the letters, which lead the couple to some very peculiar observations. As he got deeper in his studies, he contacted the fae's brother, Jean, who had defected to a Shadow clan. By combining Light's analytical nature and Shadow's understanding of the darkness, they began to make startling discoveries.

Hi there! This thread is going to host most of the lore from A Lovecraft Hatchery, run by me and Potatho. Each dragon that we sell will come with this lore in their bios, and we wanted to share this lore in one collected place without cluttering up the hatchery thread.

Feel free to use this lore if:
 • You bought a dragon from us, only to find that we forgot to paste the lore (Sorry!)
 • You bought a dragon that did not have lore yet, likely when the pair was brand new and we were still writing it up.
 • You accidentally messed up the code and can't fix it.
 • You deleted the bio but want part of it back (or more likely, you want to reference it when you write your own lore).
 • You like the lore but not our dragons (it happens).

Potatho did all of the wonderful coding. I just wrote the lore and pasted it into the template. Neither of us are very particular about credit. The coli sidebars come from Nirwana's thread, and while they are free to use, it would be polite if you kept them linked.

The stars were right again, and what an age-old cult had failed to do by design, a band of innocent sailors had done by accident. After vigintillions of years great Cthulhu was loose again, and ravening for delight." The Call of Cthulhu ----- [columns] [nextcol] CTHULHU ----- While Cthulhu is the most common spelling, his name is unpronounceable by dragonkind, leaving many to simply call him The Sleeper. He communicates through telepathy, and he can reach introspective dragons through their dreams. While he looks more draconic than most Outer Gods, he is almost as large as a mountain. He has leathery wings, a scaly body, and a slimy head with tentacles like an octopus or squid. His green skin is appears to be rubbery, and he has massive claws on his paws. “...for those unhallowed pits whither no dreams reach; that last amorphous blight of nethermost confusion where bubbles and blasphemes at infinity's centre the mindless daemon-sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud."
The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath

AZATHOTH

Azathoth is the head of the Outer Gods. He sprawls out at the center of the universe to the continuous, monotonous sound of someone playing the flutes. Dreamers quickly learn to fear this sound, which takes part in many dark rituals. His minions maintain hold over whole regions of Dreamland, including Leng and the dark side of the moon. Since Azathoth remains deep in outer space, he sometimes commands Nyarlathotep to do his bidding.

Alternatively described as "blind" and "mindless," he and his spawn devour anything they interact with. He appears to be a dark, shifting, shapeless void, as if he were a black hole. This would make it impossible to "dress" him in traditional clothing, although he might wrap himself in silks and ribbons for a more nebulous effect.

“The Thing of the idols, the green, sticky spawn of the stars, had awaked to claim his own. The stars were right again, and what an age-old cult had failed to do by design, a band of innocent sailors had done by accident. After vigintillions of years great Cthulhu was loose again, and ravening for delight."

CTHULHU

While Cthulhu is the most common spelling, his name is unpronounceable by dragonkind, leaving many to simply call him The Sleeper.

Cthulhu became stranded in Sorienth when it moved too far away for him to reach other galaxies. He and his spawn fought against the resident Other Gods, regenerating too quickly to be killed. However, the war was ended when R'lyeh sank beneath the ocean. Cthulhu bides his time in his sunken temple, waiting for the stars to realign so he can escape.

NYARLATHOTEP

Nyarlathotep is one of the Outer Gods, although he inhabits Sorienth and Dreamland more often than any other cosmic being. Nyarlathotep seems to be the only one who can successfully change his appearance into more palatable creatures. When walking among dragons, he tends to become a skydancer for its height and pose. No matter the form, he always appears to be darkly colored, and his bearing is compared to an ancient Pharaoh.

He usually wears dark cloaks or alchemical trinkets. However, he has been known to dress more playfully when he confronts a particularly cheeky dreamer.

He gained the epithet "The Crawling Chaos" for good reason. He is known to serve Azathoth's ill intentions, and he viciously protects the lesser gods. Sometimes, he poses as a powerful arcanist, putting on prophetic shows with elaborate devices. Dragons should avoid these at all costs; curious viewers will become possessed by his enchantments.

He is known, on very rare occasions, to share some of his knowledge with brave and curious dreamers. However, dragons should be careful what they wish to know; the unlimited access can lead to very dark discoveries, and the sensation of limitlessness can drive them insane. Dragons should also be very wary if they hear Yog-Sothoth's name mentioned during an incantation; these spells are very dark and powerful.

Yog-Sothoth lives on a plane with more than the three dimensions known to the dragons of Sorienth. Because of this, his polyhedron shaped form is hard for dragon minds to understand, and he is usually described as a group of glowing spheres. On other occasions, he will remain invisible, with his voice echoing inside the dragon's head.

Local residents avoid the area because of a dragon-shaped tree, although very few know the sad story of jealousy and revenge. Once, there were unlikely best friends: Musides the friendly Plague dragon, and Kalos the quiet Nature dragon. Together, they were the most famous sculptors in Sorienth, and they often helped each other with their work. However, things slowly soured between them during a competition against each other. When Kalos realized his friend was poisoning him to sabotage his sculpture, Kalos asked an Other God to help him fake his own death and transfer his soul into a tree. Filled with regret, Musides took care of the tree that would be his own doom. Kalos refused to forgive Musides. Instead, he waited for a storm to disguise his revenge: he smashed their old lair to bits, killing his friend and destroying all of their sculptures. ANTIQUARIANS

Dragons who stumble across the supernatural come from all walks of life: artists, mathematicians, astronomers, and philosophers. However, the most notorious investigators are usually antiquarians, a term to describe history enthusiasts and antique collectors. These dragons are exceptionally curious and usually uncover records best left untouched.

These dragons come from or are attracted to the Light flight, since it is closely aligned with scholarly pursuit and relic collection. Their appearance is usually neutral or muted, but their minds are always very bright. They often resemble the dusty books they devour in their free time.

This dragon is the child of Past and Antiquity, the pair who began the investigation of eldritch mysteries. He is very interested in his parents' undertakings, which range from finding the location of R'lyeh to seeking information on the Elder Gods themselves. He is learning how to read some of the languages that existed before the Third Age.

“Out of the fungus-ridden earth steamed up a vaporous corpse-light, yellow and diseased, which bubbled and lapped to a gigantic height in vague outlines half-human and half-monstrous, through which I could see the chimney and fireplace beyond.”

ETIENNE ROULET

While the Hewn City fascinates Light dragons, there is one lair that is always avoided. It is not feared for its darkness; instead, it houses a monster alternately described as "vampire," a "werewolf," or a "ghost."

Etienne Roulet and his family fled after his father was arrested for murders committed while seemingly wearing a Wolf Cape. Seeking anonymity, the Roulets tried to live a normal life in the Hewn City, but they seemed odd enough that they had trouble being accepted into anyone's lair. One day, their terrified neighbors revolted, and the family was never seen again.

However, their legacy lived on, even after their lair was destroyed and built over. Etienne had secretly continued his father's dark studies, allowing his son to merge a monster from a different realm. After their deaths, its spirit was free to siphon away the life of any foolish enough to enter. This bodiless creature is tethered to the family's grave, marked by a patch of yellow mold in the shape of a dragon, found deep in their lair.

“Meanwhile his evenings were spent beside the tomb of his friend, where a young olive tree had sprung up near the sleeper’s head. So swift was the growth of this tree, and so strange was its form, that all who beheld it exclaimed in surprise; and Musides seemed at once fascinated and repelled.”

THE FATE OF KALOS

Hidden among the other ancient structures of the Sunbeam Ruins, there is a lone tomb surrounded by an olive grove.

As punishment, the Gladeskeeper refused to change Kalos back.

“I remember the twilight, the moon, and soft songs, and the window where I was rocked to sleep. And through the window was the street where the golden lights came, and where the shadows danced on houses of marble.”
The Quest of Iranon

THE QUEST OF IRANON

Iranon is a prince in Dreamland. When he was very young, he was separated from his family when they fled in exile. Ever since then, he has sought to return to his birth city of Aira. However, he cannot remember where Aira is located; he only has vague memories and bedtime stories to remind him of what it looked like. He has vowed to never give up searching until he finds it.

Iranon remains forever a child as he goes on his quest, even though his companions continue growing up around him. He has a beautiful singing voice, which he uses to tell others about his wistful scraps of memories. He dresses in very simply, with vines in his golden hair and tattered purple robes.

Aira itself is a beautiful city of marble and beryl, that seems to glow golden in the sunlight. It is nestled in a lush valley and the smell of flowers always fills the air. The area is full of bright rivers, waterfalls, pools, and fountains. From the citadel, the viewer can have a breathtaking view of the entire city.

YELLOW ROBES

Not much is known about the high priest. Very few dragons even know its name, and these unlucky souls would never repeat it, only referring to him as, "The High Priest Not to Be Described." Even its species and gender remain unknown.

A few facts are generally agreed upon: the high priest wears flowing yellow robes, accented with red, along with silken mask and gloves. Its outfit thoroughly disguises the outline of its body, but it generally appears to be short, stocky, and lumpish. It has been seen to play a lute, which suggests it is closely connected to the mindless Outer God Azathoth (another entity whose name should not be spoken aloud).

Its current whereabouts are unknown, but it has been seen worshiping deep in the Plateau of Leng, a cold wasteland filled with the minions of Nyarlathotep. There, its hiding spot was located within a dark, labyrinthine cave system marked by strange art and hieroglyphics.

Dragons who are inclined to be deep thinkers have a chance at viewing these other realities. Dreamers, mathematicians, and antiquarians have all successfully peered beyond the normal limits of dragon experience. These glimpses into the other, however, permanently change them. They are faced with the fact that dragons are only a small, insignificant portion of a vast universe. This fact might not have been so overwhelming if the discoverers were not thrown into the paths of the horrible, powerful creatures that live in the other dimensions. They barter with dragons further inland, but the trade itself is not their aim. They keep any newcomers away from the terrible old cottage. On top of one of the cliffs rests a decrepit house built long before any dragons settled the area. The windows are small and dusty, and the only door faces directly off the cliff itself. The house seems abandoned except on misty nights, when lights glint through the darkness and strange noises drift across the water. Lured by the mystery, young Light dragons dare each other to fly up and enter. The bravest hatchlings hover around the door only to find it locked. This playful behavior scares the older clans members, who know the truth: the house unlocks on misty nights, and the creature that lives inside lures passerby to enter. Cthulhu used to fly across the universe, destroying world after world, until he became stranded in Sorienth when the stars became misaligned. Biding his time until he could reach another world, he went into a hibernal sleep in the temple of his city. R'lyeh is a massive city, preserved for aeons by Cthulhu's petrifying spell. Because it was built by a "Great Old One," the geometry is multi-dimensional and seems irregular to the current inhabitants of Sorienth. “Do you know what that is?” he whispered. “That is ultra-violet.” He chuckled oddly at my surprise. “You thought ultra-violet was invisible, and so it is - but you can see that and many other invisible things now… I mean get most of the evidence from beyond.”
From Beyond

FROM BEYOND

There are other dimensions than what Sorienth's inhabitants can normally see.

If the dragons are brave enough, there are several ways of seeing things from beyond. One dragon built a machine that could unlock a part of the viewer's brain, although this machine was destroyed. Sight might be granted by one of the Other Gods, or it might be revealed by physically travelling to another plane.

“All night in Kingsport they watched that lofty cliff when the storm and the mists gave them glimpses of it, and when toward the small hours the little dim windows went dark they whispered of dread and disaster. ”
The Strange High House in the Mist

pDACUOg.gif
HOUSE IN THE MIST

Near the beacon of the Radiant Eye, there is a small dragon-made fishing community called Kingsport.

Guests of the house eventually return "safely" home, although drained of all their curiosity and imagination.

“The solid rock gave place to the giant foundations of the monstrous castle... Vortices of cold wind surged dankly through sightless labyrinths of onyx, and Carter could never tell what Cyclopean stairs and corridors lay silent along the route of his endless aerial twisting.”

KADATH

Kadath a massive mountaintop castle, home to the lesser gods in Dreamland. Once, the lesser gods used to live on many different mountains, but they were eventually driven away by Dreamland citizens. The most notable intrusion on their privacy was by the famous Barzai the Wise of Ulthar, who climbed Hatheg-Kla to spy on them before being killed in retribution. After this, the lesser gods chose to move to Kadath for its seclusion. It took Randolph Carter, a renown dreamer, months of questing before he could hunt down the location of this famed city, which is north of Leng and Inquanok.

Kadath is built entirely out of onyx. Its monstrous scale makes it almost impossible for dragon minds to comprehend. A single room is large enough that someone standing in it would feel as if they were outdoors. Too large for any sunlight to penetrate inside, the darkness is broken only by eery, unnatural lights.

“They were of the reptile kind, with body lines suggesting something of a crocodile, sometimes a seal, but more often nothing of which either the naturalist of the paleontologists ever heard.”
The Nameless City

niNcT8P.gif
THE NAMELESS CITY

Deep in the desert lies a city which has been abandoned long before the creation of dragons, ensuring that its name has been forgotten to time. In its heyday, the nameless city had been centered in fertile lands and controlled a massive coastal empire. However, the ocean gradually dried up and turned the area into a desert wasteland. The city was forced to move underground, which slowly lead to its demise. Today, only a few temples and niches remain on the surface. Beneath them runs a long, narrow tunnel, lined by mummified citizens and lit by some unknown phosphorescence.

The city was once inhabited by an advanced civilization of short, reptilian creatures with potentially immortal lifespans. They were successful warriors and traders. They liked to display their wealth by dressing in expensive clothing and jewelry. After their water began to dry up, the reptiles were becoming increasingly paranoid and prejudiced, and they slowly began to waste away.

OLATHOË

Olathoë is a city in Dreamland, located in the land of Lomar on the plateau of Sarkis. Nestled between two mountains, the city was full of marble towers, citadels, and fortifications. It is very near the pole, which makes it very cold. In winter, it would be left in twilit darkness, even during the day, so that the stars were always visible. The city looks ethereal and ghostly during these months. During the summer, the city would be under constant, pale sunlight.

The city is inhabited by Lomarians refugees from Zobna, which was overtaken by advancing glacier fields. The Lomarians were tall, serious, beared men with long robes. The city eventually falls to invading Inutos, the ancient ancestors to the Eskimos. A guardian from the waking world kept watch in the tower, but he was put under a spell by the Pole Star:

"Slumber, watcher, till the spheres/ Six and twenty thousand years/ Have revolv'd, and I return/ To the spot where now I burn."

R'LYEH

R'lyeh was built by Cthulhu and his spawn to be their temporary abode.

Its overwhelming size and unnatural build has been known to give even the hardiest viewers vertigo. An overbearing smell of rotting fish fills the air.

The city was located on an island somewhere to the east of the Beacon of the Radiant Eye. However, the island sank to the ocean floor, taking the city with it. Occasionally, an earthquake will cause the very peak of the city to surface, exposing the doors to the main temple.

Contrary to superstition, the black cats have no different luck than other cats. However, they seem more likely to form special connections with dreamers, such as Menes or Randolph Carter. In this way, they can be used to test a dragon's truthfulness; no true dreamer could resist paying his or her respects to these small creatures. It was because of a small black cats that Ulthar created its legal policies protecting the species. When a couple murdered the kitten of an orphaned boy, the other cats joined forces to take revenge. Later, these cats would start a war with the zoogs in order to protect a little black kitten. “And because he loved nothing on earth more than small black kittens, he stooped and petted the sleek cats of Ulthar as they licked their chops, and he did not mourn because those inquisitive zoogs would escort him no farther.”
The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath

BLACK CATS

All cats are important in the dream lands, but small black kittens have special meaning.

This cat and his family remembered Carter's help and repaid him for it later, rescuing him from the moon beasts.

These cats are usually small creatures with golden eyes. They love to frolic and play, and they are loyal friends if one pets them and occasionally offers a saucer of milk.

This cat and his family remembered Carter's help and repaid him for it later, rescuing him from the moon beasts. These cats are usually small creatures with golden eyes. They love to frolic and play, and they are loyal friends if one pets them and occasionally offers a saucer of milk. ----- Suggested Readings: The Cats of Ulthar, The Other Gods, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath

“For the cat is cryptic, and close to strange things which men cannot see... The Sphinx is his cousin, and he speaks her language; but he is more ancient than the Sphinx, and remembers that which she hath forgotten.”

CATS OF ULTHAR

Cats play an important part in Dreamland affairs. Because they like to roam, they have collected a huge amount of history and information about the world. The surest place to find one is in the land of Ulthar, where the law forbids the killing of any cat.

Outside of Ulthar, their curiosity might get them into trouble. However, they can often escape from perils that dragons might not recognize. They are skilled at sensing unpleasant energies, which they stubbornly avoid. This leaves some unfortunate blanks in the cats' knowledge, but they would rather be safe than sorry.

Cats are quiet, clever creatures and talented hunters. One or two might linger in a kind dragon's lair, and a dreamer might even learn to speak their language. Even then, cats prefer to mind their own business and expect their hosts to do the same. Although they might remain secretive towards their host, they will remember every kindness done to them.

CATS OF ULTHAR

Cats play an important part in Dreamland affairs. Curiosity sometimes kills these cats, but in most occasions, they show enough sense to avoid dangerous situations. They tend to be better than dragons are when it comes to sensing the mystical energies of the Other Gods. Even creatures associated with the other Gods, such as the squat creatures of Leng, are repulsive to cats, who would just as soon avoid them entirely.

However, cats are quick to aid their friends, whether it be other cats or even kind dragons. The cat clans will join forces to amass fierce army of fangs and claws, which spells doom even for much larger attackers.

Generally speaking, cats are quiet, solitary creatures. One or two might linger in a kind dragon's lair, and a dreamer might even learn to speak their language. Even then, cats prefer to mind their own business and expect their hosts to do the same. They even keep secret where they often travel at night: the dark side of the moon.

“What the hound was, and why it pursued me, were questions still vague; but I had first heard the baying in that ancient churchyard, and every subsequent event including St. John’s dying whisper had served to connect the curse with the stealing of the amulet.”
The Hound

ZAPODKW.gif
THE HOUND

This creature is described as being hound-like more for its sound than for its actual appearance. When it stalks its prey, its cries can be easily confused with the bays of a hunting dog.

Its actual appearance is somewhat under debate. Leng jewelry depict an animal with a cat-like body, bird wings, and a wolfish face full of sharp teeth. On the other hand, more recent eye witness accounts describe a bipedal creature with bat wings, claws, and fangs. Both accounts are likely flawed, since the hounds only hunt at night, and those who see it rarely live to tell the tale. The Necronomicon suggests that it might be more phantasmal in nature, in which case it might be possessing and then altering physical hosts in order to feed.

In any case, it behaves similarly to a vampire: shriveling away when starved, and bloating back to life after feeding. It can stay dormant for centuries. Although it prefers colder climates, it has been known to track its target over vast swaths of land, making it impossible to outrun the creature for long.

THE MOON BOG

Where the Shadow and Water territories meet, they form a gloomy, unassuming bog. Dragons who try to build lairs there quickly realize they are not welcome; threatening dreams, eerie flutes, and strange lights will keep them awake for days on end. If that is not enough to discourage the "intruders" to leave, the unexplained disappearances of familiars and clan mates quickly sends them on their way.

The culprits are a lost civilization who survived the explosion of the Second Age by hiding beneath the stagnant waters. Horrified by the destruction, they turned their backs on the sleeping deities of Sorienth. Instead, they began to worship the Outer Gods. Twisted by this foreign magic, they slowly warped into glowing swamp monsters with siren-like abilities.

Despite being worshipers of Azathoth and the moon beasts, they are surprisingly non-confrontational creatures. They prefer to scare away dragons rather than attack them, so actually seeing these creatures is very rare.

“ As I told you longe ago, do not calle up That which you can not put downe; either from dead Saltes or out of ye Spheres beyond. Have ye Wordes for laying at all times readie, and stopp not to be sure when there is any Doubte of Whom you have. Stones are all chang’d now in Nine groundes out of 10. You are never sure till you question.”

ESSENTIAL SALTES

Rest assured that essential salts are much more nefarious than essential oils. This substance is made out of ashes and grave dust, distilled by alchemy into its most "essential" bits.

While not technically "necromancy," anything summoned by this dust will come back to some form of life. Unfortunately, it takes even the most careful practitioner years to summon a recognizable creature. However, these salts are convenient to summoners with strong stomachs who do not mind appearances. Even pulpy abominations still retain all memory of their past life, which is key to rediscovering secrets.

Essential salts are best kept in neatly labeled, clear glass jars. Use with extreme caution; while not harmful in itself, summoning the wrong dragon or beastclan could prove lethal if not well prepared. For the same reasons, it is best to hide the necessary spells in a separate place, or else an unassuming clan mate might accidentally bring back something that ought to stay dead.

Suggested Readings:The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Through the Gates of the Silver Key, The Dunwich Horror
