TOPIC | Sandsurge Gene Error Thread
This thread is to track any gene errors that occur with the new Sandsurge Breed. This thread is for this breed only.

Many genes have accommodations for dragon anatomy where one breed is every so slightly different than others because it worked better for them. These are not considered errors.

Please report any errors you encounter and we will do our best to correct them in a timely manner.

Sadly, the multi gaze and line breaking tertiary issue is a technical limitation. Eyes must always layer over the primary, secondary, and tertiary genes, and they are not contextually aware of what is below them and able to alter their shape to accommodate. This is a limitation with all of our dragons that have line breaking tertiaries.

Note that it may take a short while for the site's internal image cache to reflect the corrected image assets.

Known Issues

Investigating (Not sure if issue or not)

Working as intended
 • Secondary: Marlin having an extra color not present in sailfish is intended.
 • The primary gene being visible in the tips of the frills is intended.
 • Primary Arapaima having its colors visible in the tips of the frills is intended.
 • Some genes do not have the belly color that is used for basic genes. This is by intent, but should be consistent within itself and with modern counterparts (if present)
 • Some genes do not use the horn colors consistent with basic genes. This is by intent, but should be consistent within itself and with modern counterparts (if present)
 • Tertiary: Crest's bright accent colors are intended.
 • Secondary: Safari not being present on the crest is intended and is consistent with the Bogsneak and Fae crests for Safari.
 • Secondary: Striation not being present on the side fins/tail is intended and is consistent with the Fae crests for Striation.
 • Primary: Harlequin has different markings for male and female dragons. This is consistent with all other breeds, and while the markings swap genders between breeds, each breed has the complimentary pair.
 • Secondary: Jester has different markings for male and female dragons. This is consistent with all other breeds, and while the markings swap genders between breeds, each breed has the complimentary pair.
 • Tertiary: Augment having colored lines around glowing areas is intended.
 • Tertiary: Shark has long "top" fins on both sides of the dragon. It is not supposed to be centered, and is intentional.
 • The semi-transparent stray pixels found in the large skins templates do not affect the genes unless the dragon image is stacked upon itself multiple times over, which would never occur on the website. It's technically a bug, but not one that has a notable visual effect on the final dragons viewed on the site.
 • Tertiary: Spectre in obsidian is intended to have some green tints. This is not a part of the great misclick and is a deliberate choice.

I will be deleting reports that have been corrected, are not considered an issue, or are duplicate reports as I encounter/investigate them to keep the thread current!
Any chance you could have a section called "working as intended" instead of just deleting them? That way we all know what the intended features are instead of wondering if apparent bugs have been reported yet. Or things that might be popularly regarded as bugsin the future will have the mystery removed.
This is a great idea. I'll add that in now. As a heads-up, I have been going through each post in order, so everything above this that was working as intended was deleted without being listed, but I think that this is a great idea going forward and will clear up a lot of confusion. Thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you all for the thorough breakdown of your obsidian findings. You are correct. There is something going on here. I was looking in the wrong place the entire time. I never thought to look into the recolor engine itself, because it's a program and should be making the same color choices every time. However, those color choices we gave it are occasionally updated any time there's a new gene that has custom colors made. It was an issue with our swatch sheet that we use to decide on and sample colors from. We create a visual chart so we can kinda see what's going on with any color, and choose what colors we like. With all these great reports, I finally decided to check file version histories and was able to pull up a version of the chart from 2018 and... it was different! Chart 2019 and before: Chart 2020 and beyond: If you look, even the black lines got colored, as if someone (almost certainly me!) paint bucketed with a higher tolerance and it spread into every cell that was even adjacently black. This is the image that colors were sampled from, and mainly just existed as a visual reference for us as artists otherwise when making new genes. When a new gene is added, we resample the image to get those colors into the engine... and well, that green spread was added in, overwriting the original obsidian colors! Apologies and Thanks: I am sorry that I did not catch on to what was happening sooner. I really did look into the first and second (and sometimes third!) obsidian reports when it would pop up in a new breed's thread. I would go in, look at the gene files, look at the layers, check it over, and find it was set up identical to older dragons. I went over layer by layer checking opacity settings or seeing if there was some wierd color profile that could have exported poorly; I could never find anything, and I knew that we did (by intent) often user green and blue green undertones for obsidian. But ah, apparently not THAT many greens! (very sorry!) The greens and blue-greens that are intentional: My apologies that I did not think to investigate the color picker itself before this. I am truly sorry that this took as long as it did! What will happen now: It'll take some time, but I am going to restore the colors that were touched by the paint-bucket mishap. Any gene (or breed) that was added post mid-2020 will have its assets recolored by the engine once more and reuploaded to the site. (Obelisks sometimes squeaked by with old colors because they were in development for A LONG TIME, so that's why they are sometimes old colors despite being released in 2021!) Greens will still appear in obsidian, as that is by intent, but not as many greens, and they should be consistent with older breeds!
Thank you all for the thorough breakdown of your obsidian findings. You are correct. There is something going on here.

This is gonna get technical, but TLDR - color chart got paint bucketed with a high tolerance level sometime in mid 2020, and the recolor engine then got updated with those mistakes.

What happened:
It's not an issue with the gene files. I was looking in the wrong place the entire time. I never thought to look into the recolor engine itself, because it's a program and should be making the same color choices every time. However, those color choices we gave it are occasionally updated any time there's a new gene that has custom colors made.

With all these great reports, I finally decided to check file version histories and was able to pull up a version of the chart from 2018 and... it was different!

Chart 2019 and before:

Chart 2020 and beyond:

What will happen now:
It'll take some time, but I am going to restore the colors that were touched by the paint-bucket mishap.

I performed a thread-cleanup as this began to turn into a discussion space and it does need to stay as up-to-date with Sandsurge errors as possible, and those get lost in between the discussion posts. Thanks again for those who helped to find the obsidian error.

I'll be comparing the entirety of the early-range swatch sheet for any other dark colors that got hit with that paint bucket mishap and turned green.

I'll be rerunning the engine on anything that was saved March 2020 and beyond based on the "last modified" date of the files. At this point in time there is no need to report specific instances of the obsidian error, and this thread should return to gene errors found in Sandsurge.

Thank you again for your reports!

Doing another update in Mysteries of the Recolor Engine:

I finally figured out what was going on with Python and Morph, and it was again an issue with color selection being bungled on their way to the recolor engine. The miscolored Python and Morph on Sandsurge, Obelisk, and Aether will be corrected.

It's also why Nightshade Sparkle is messed up on recent breeds.

To be fair, the above two are separate from THE GREAT MISCLICK that took a contiguous line of all dark colors in a row to green.

These smaller boo-boos listed above will be referred to as Misclick 2: Electric Boogaloo.
