A Nocturn Subspecies Project

-Introduction-

Throughout your travels into the Tangled Wood, you have come to realize that you have underestimated the maze like quality of the Shadow domain. Night has since fallen, obscuring any struggling light that dares to exist here. You settle on camping for the night, as you are unable to make out more than a few feet in front of you.

Among the mountain of knotted brambles that tower at your sides, you notice a flock of figures snaking their way through the forest. Leathery wings bend and bow to make way for the foliage; their skeletal claws dragging rail-thin bodies through the caress of thorny thistles.

You lock eyes with a trailing member of the convoy, who pauses their stride upon noticing you. She starts to crawl over to where you stand, tossing her head back over her shoulder to echo a series of chirps, causing a few of comrades slow to a halt behind her.

"Hello, stranger." The frail Nocturne speaks using the common draconic dialect, however it is clear that this language is not her native tongue. A thick, weighty accent blankets her words. "You are deep in our forest, we do not see dragonfolk so far from the path. This is sacred grounds for our kind.... Are you a friend?" She caulks her head to the side, gripping her staff a bit tighter.

You explain yourself, insisting that your imposition was not intentional. She responds after a moment, "We do not take kind to outsiders.... but you are lost. You may stay until sunrise... We will be your friend."

She turns her head back once again, and echoes a wail to the others hidden behind the underbrush. You are then accompanied by three more of these small dragons, who trill and hum to their neighbor as they approach your camp. Though wary, they generously offer you berries and herbs from their pouches, and begin to build makeshift nests from the few soft ferns that surround your camp. "We keep good company... hm?"

-Lore-

When the calamity of the third age came to a smoldering close, the Shadowbinder found herself amongst the remnants of a ruined landscape. The crumbling stone structures provided refuge from the oppressive glare of the sun, and protected her throughout the next millennia. Throughout time she molded the earth in her image; arching thorned knots and darkened pines casting an everlasting shade over what was becoming the Tangled Wood.

Sculpted from those shadows, she blessed the world of Sorneith with a breed of dragon to represent her trickery and whimsy, the Nocturne.

The first of this breed were small, spindly creatures. They required a lightweight, skeletal body in order to traverse safely through the untamed undergrove, thus making any form of sexual dimorphism unnecessary. Their coloration and markings evolved to blend in with the murky foliage of the night; dappled and stark rippling patterns influenced by spotted fungi and twisting brambles. Inevitably, this behaviour lead to the species revealing themselves to the other inhabitants of the realm.

Today, few descendants of these once bountiful progenitors remain. Much to their dismay, they have now become classified as a Nocturne subspecies as their numbers dwindle in comparison to their modern cousins.

Due to the cyclical nature, these paths have been well trodden for centuries; making this form of travel more ceremonial than outright necessary for their survival. While their migratory patterns may differ from region to region, at several points throughout the year all Jadewing Jesters will pass through three key locations; all of which are located in the Tangled Wood. These locations are host of three major holidays; the fall harvest, the spring swarm, and nesting season. Here, all tribes will meet one another to share news, trade, and form new bonds.
