Starsong:

A singing came over the hills, and at first the little creatures of the fields—mice, geckos, and sparrows—perked up at the sweet notes of the song. Then the singer came into view, an imperial of shining pink scales and pearly horns, and while his stride was steady and slow, at the sight of the dragon, those same small listeners fled into the bushes.

Starsong didn’t need to sing wherever he went—and he didn’t often, in the company of his fellows—but on a fine, lovely morning such as this, with the sunlight warm on his wings and the crunch of grass still wet with dew under his claws, why, there was no reason not to. And anyway, the continuous stream of sound was helpful, whereas mere speech wasn’t quite as efficient.

As he walked, following a deer path he’d trod several times over the past couple moons, now, his long ears twitched this way and that, tracking every tiny rustle in the grass and sigh of the wind. But they trained especially on the places the notes of his song bounced back to him, so that, even blind, each step he took was guided by the world and his senses of it around him.

Smelling the nearby critters and hearing their light scuffles of feet, Starsong was tempted to stop and hunt. He’d woken before sunrise after all, and it had been a long while since the clawful of raspberries he’d gulped down before setting off on his hike. And he would have stopped by the inn at the foot of these sharp-sloped hills to grab travel jerky—but he’d spotted several other dragon silhouettes moving through the windows, and after only a minute’s deliberation, had merely refilled his canteen at the well before moving hastily on.

He hoped none of the other travellers were also headed this way. It would quite ruin the pleasant morning if he were forced to make small talk with a dragon who caught up with him.

Reminded of that, Starsong quickly set aside the urge to hunt and continued on. He could eat on the way back, but he was much too excited to slow down now. Moons he had waited, and thought, and slept on it, and changed his mind a dozen times over, but his final decision was firmly made. And with the grasshopper courier sent his way the night previous, he knew today was the day.

An hour more of walking, and Starsong crested the last stone hill. Pausing at the top, he sniffed, and was gratified to have the stinky tang of salt clog his nostrils. Though sightless, he could imagine the little hut at the bottom of the shallow valley, built just out of reach of the ocean’s waves, and an excited shiver went down his scales as he recalled the grasshopper’s message:

The item you want is in stock—though half the shipment was lost to a storm, so only in limited numbers. If you’re still interested, I have an opening at noon tomorrow.
—Y

“It’s in stock,” Starsong whispered, then laughed. “Finally!”

And though the downward slope still protruded with sharp outcroppings of pink stone and loose shale, the imperial bounded down the dune with barely a thought, too out of breath to even whistle as he ran.

He slipped only once, and arrived unharmed at the edge of the meadow that stretched out to the pebbly shore of the island. Quickly he composed himself, giving his mane a quick combing and settling his wings stately on his back before lifting his head high and striding forward. He hummed as he went, and soon found his claws clicking on smooth wood as he climbed the steps up to the cabin porch.

“Ytsore!” Starsong called as he pushed open the door. “I think I got here before noon!”

“A few minutes late,” a gravelly voice said drily, and Starsong swung his head to the left to face the old pearlcatcher, but continued, “You’re in luck. I have a couple sets remaining.”

“Excellent,” Starsong said with relish, humming as he carefully threaded his way through the little shop’s many displays and shelves and followed Ytsore to a wall of cabinets near the back. He laughed. “I can never figure out how you see so much business, being as isolated as you are.”

He heard the pearlcatcher shrug her wings. “Customers are willing to come a long way to get good products. Here we are.” She opened a cabinet and Starsong heard a distinct tinkle as she withdrew a chain of jewellry. “Lean down.”

He lowered his head, and felt her claws brush over his scales as she held up the earrings to his horn, then ear. “Mmmm, yes. The color fits you perfectly.”

“I’ll take your word for it.”

“So you are wanting to do it.”

His heart gave a nervous jolt, but Starsong nodded. “I’m ready.”

She chuckled as she tapped his shoulder with her tail and led him into the back room, where he lay down on a rug and she gathered her supplies. “You sound so serious. It’s only a few little holes.”

“I know! But still. Change is scary.” He drummed his claws anxiously on the rug as he heard her approach. “Talk as you go, please?”

“Of course.” She narrated her actions as she brought the sanitizer and needle close to his ear, warned him when the poke was coming, and congratulated him as she wiped the new piercing clean. Starsong closed his eyes as she slid the earring in, then opened them as she stepped back, leaving a strange new weight on the side of his head.

He gave his ear an experimental flick, and winced at the light pain that lanced through it.

“Well?” Ytsore asked. “Was it worth it?”

He touched the small chain running between the dangling stars with gentle claws, and felt a purr rumble through his chest. “Thank you,” he whispered.
