I personally love how small Spines is, it's a nice little accent! Plus, we have Fans, Porcupine, and their natural spines for big spikes.
Also, I love pretending Spines on babies is just the tiny development of Porcupine lol

i would hazard a guess that because they're working on the gene rarity for several different breeds they might also be giving people a grace period because of nesting/breeding projects which will be impacted by the change
and this is a good chunk of time in case they decide they need to revamp a few other genes as well

Ya, a lot of peeps were angry at the sudden change of spines with no warning the last time, so I'd say they are giving plenty of time for peeps to change genes on pairs & to try and avoid as much backlash and hostility as possible.
