Biography

Uh-oh, looks like this lovable misfit wandered a little too far from his lair (200004, BlueEyesNeko), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.

Carswell always felt like the ugly duckling. His two sisters, Tiana and Cinder, were beautiful, while he felt like a mixed up calico of a dragon. He had the busy crystal gene from his father and the okapi stripes from his mother. He just felt like he didn't belong. He didn't like his stripes, even though they reminded him of his mother, whom he loved deeply. He always felt sad and other hatchlings with pretty colors and genes picked on him. His father, Boreas, always defended him, and his mother and sisters loved him for who he was. Carswell wanted to feel he belonged somewhere. His mother told him stories of traveling dragons, and he thought he might be able to feel like he fit in if he became one of those travelers. His mother was very supportive and his sisters were excited for him. He left his home clan in search of a place to feel at home in.

The Guardian's travels led him to a small clan within the Tsunami Flats. He silently watched the members from afar. Most of the clan did not catch his eye, but four of them shared a similarity with him: a crystalline body. There were two Imperials, a prideful Snapper, and a silly Coatl. The colours of those dragons seemed to blend together beautifully. Carswell sighed as he looked back at the clashing thistle stripes on his hind legs and tail.

These crystal dragons seemed to be friendly, but would they understand his feelings of not belonging? He jumped to a wrongful assumption. No... probably not. Their bodies are enveloped with beauty, unlike mine. Instead of approaching the clan, the Guardian decided it was time to move on.
Carswell next wandered to the Mirrorlight Promenade, where he happened upon a clan just beginning to really dig it's roots in. There were hatchlings about yelling and chasing one another, and an intelligent looking crystal skydancer caught his eye, but he chose not to approach quite yet. Instead, it took a little tundra hatchling to stumble up to him for the clan to really take notice.
"Hi!" The hatchling yelled, "I'm Fridge! What's your name?" Carswell was a bit surprised at the volume of the hatchling's voice, and only managed to mutter "Carswell" before running off. Perhaps he would find a home in another place...
The next clan he came upon seemed a bit odd. Something seemed off. He noticed another Crystal dragon, but this one was beautiful. Such a shame. He was about to leave, but when he turned around, there was a dragon behind him. It was pure obsidian except for a coral crackle. "Why, you look lost, come along little one." The strange dragon said. Carswell was about to run again when he noticed he was surrounded by three dragons behind him. It hadn't been a suggestion. After giving his name-against his better judgment- he was given a lecture on a few companies and an...'Air Force base', whatever that was, that shared his name. They seemed obsessed with names, and the coral dragon; Nenimoto he learned, was acting very scary. As night fell, Carswell bolted. No way was he staying longer than necessary, no matter what this shadow flight clan said.

Carswell's desperate flight from The Tangled Wood brought him to The Sea of a Thousand Currents. In fact, it was so desperate, and Carswell's night vision was so poor, that ran off a cliff and plunged directly into the ocean. As a Wind dragon by birth, Carswell was a poor swimmer, and thrashed about, knowing that he was going to die, never having found love, or a place to call his home. Water filled his nose, burned his throat, stung his eyes. His attempts at swimming grew weaker and weaker. Finally, he slipped under the water, and everything went dark.

Carswell awoke on a boat, and in a very strange water Clan. They lived their lives on boats, and considered themselves very open and welcoming of Wandering dragons. The Clan's healer, Pebble told him that a young scout, Lonan had rescued him from drowning and brought him home to the Clan. Carswell had also sprained his wing when he fled through the Tangled Wood. As he recovered in the weeks that followed, he and Lonan spent a lot of time together. When Lonan asked him if he wanted to nest with her, Carswell was surprised and shocked. How could someone like a misfit like him? Not sure what to do, he agreed. They had three children together. Carswell named his oldest son and his daughter after his parents. When Carswell looked at his children, the absolute crushing weight of the responsibility he now had finally struck him. Why had he agreed to become a parent? He wasn't ready for this! He wasn't good enough to be a father! So, that night, he took the copper bracelet Lonan had gifted to him, and flew away from his mate, and his children as fast as he could. Maybe one day, I'll go back, he thought. But, deep down, he knew he never would.

Landing in the area near the observatory Carswell watched some very beautiful crystal dragons coming and going from one lair. Venturing a tiny bit closer he was approached by a very bright wildclaw he introduced himself as Remy and stay in the same breath. He seemed nice enough so Carswell excepted and followed.

Remy was an energetic dragon and seemed to know all the others in his clan quite well. He introduced Carswell to the other crystal dragons who all said he has fascinating colours. Remy got very excited when the leaders asked Carswell about some defense training, he accepted this and was very surprised when on his return Remy gifted him an Ivory scarf for his travels.

When Carswell announced he was leaving the other dragons bid him a safe trip but Remy was to upset to see him off... Carswell hoped that the wildclaw would remember him fondly.

Carswell traveled to the Southern Icefields, and during his time in the Frigid Floes, he noticed two hatchlings playing in the snow. He wondered, 'Where was the rest of the clan?' As he spoke, he realized one of the hatchlings had overheard him. He flinched, but before he could make an escape, one of the hatchlings, a coatl, flew over. He introduced himself as Borealis, and quickly flew around Carswell, chattering nonstop. The other hatchling, a Skydancer who called herself Xen, was much more reserved. When Borealis announced he was going to get the rest of the the clan, Xen spoke up for the first time. "I like your scales. I wish I was shiny." Carswell was floored. Why would any dragon, let alone this beautiful young Skydancer, want to look like him? When Borealis returned, Carswell mutely let the young coatl lead him along. When he was introduced to the other dragons in the clan, they were warm and welcoming, not at all like the cold and calculating dragons of rumor. The other crystal dragons in the clan noticed the embarrassment he felt for his shining scales, and they were quick to assure him that crystal scales were something to be proud of. One of the dragons, Illusionaire, was strange, and something seemed off about her.
As the days passed and turned into weeks, Carswell began to feel more comfortable with the clan. Xen followed him everywhere, the quiet Skydancer in awe of his scales. Eventually, Carswell began to think that perhaps his crystals weren't so bad. It didn't mean he was proud of them, but they didn't mortify him anymore.
Eventually, Carswell decided it was time to move on, and bade the clan goodbye. He left with fond memories and newfound almost-pride, and he found himself looking forward to his next adventure.
Next, Carswell headed north, joined by a a fellow traveler on the way. The Dagonhome clan that the the two eventually found lodged with was full of welcoming dragons: Hreidarr soon found himself with a clutch of little hatchlings but Carswell, the only crystal dragon in the clan, couldn't help but feel that when he joined the room other dragons would give his scales meaningful glances and conversation would die down. With his recent experience with little Xen to give him strength, Carswell asked their main host, Roseate, outright if there was something wrong about his appearance. She explained that the clan's only other crystal dragon was their late treasurer, but in his case he hadn't been born with crystal scales: a virulent strain of gembond had grown to encase him almost entirely and he had died as a result. It had been years now, but the memory was still painful to everyone. Roseate mentioned in an undertone that it was only good that another dragon had come to show them that a crystal dragon could be healthy and happy, just like a coatl with faded plumage could be healthy and happy.

Carswell was a little daunted by trying to prove such a thing alone but did his best to be friendly and to help out... with mixed feelings when his host clan got involved in a dominance battle against his own birth flight. It was hard to be completely happy when the Earthshaker won dominance for the week, but the other dragons joy was infectious and they all agreed that his efforts in talking to the visitors had been crucial. As all of Hreidarr's hatchlings had grown and he was antsy to leave and so Carswell decided to join him for the next leg of the journey as well. Their hosts insisted that even though it was summer, that the two of them take thick cloaks with them "in case they should travel somewhere cold". Carswell tried to explain that they had just come from the Ice Floes without any cloaks but Roseate couldn't be gainsaid and simply said that they could trade the cloaks for lodging at the next clan they travelled to. It was strange to think that at the start of his journey Carswell would've been happy to have a cloak to cover his scales but now he was alright without one.

Perhaps it had been the battle against Wind Flight, but Carswell ended up taking the lead for their next destination, and as a result the two guardians found themselves the guests of Wayfarer's Rest in the Windswept Plateau. Carswell couldn't help but be overwhelmed, as it was a clan that was almost constantly in flux as dragons passed through, and even the dragons that remained as permament residents of the clan were such a wide and varied mix of species, colors and genes, that it was very difficult to feel like an outcast.

To his surprise, there were plenty of dragons who seemed interested in nesting with him as well! Originaly he shyed away from several advances, remembering his earlier experiences with fatherhood that didn't end terribly well. However it didn't take long for him to learn that parenting at Wayfarer's Rest ran somewhat differently. Not only was nesting and mating considered two seperate things (though Carswell still avoided nesting with any dragons who had mates already; that just seemed like asking for trouble), but all hatchling care was taken on by the clan's Nestkeeper. Parents were of course welcome to contribute as much to their care as they wanted to (such as his companion Hreidarr, but they also weren't looked down on if they didn't. With this arrangement, Carswell found himself interacting with his children a little more with each clutch, his confidence as a parent growing each time.

Swept up by a hurricane, the thrashing winds blew Carswell over the Sea of a Thousands Currents, to the border between the Ocean and the Lightning territories. The storm dumped him straight into the ocean where he woke up in a cavern on the inside of a cliff. He aroused to find a white wildclaw by the name of Spiritwalker, tending to his slightly torn wing, he turned his head groggily to discover himself in an seaside cave with small windows looking out upon a calm ocean. Spirit walker explained that he was dropped here by a hurricane along with another dragon, a pearlcatcher.
As soon as he got the saltwater out of his system, he began to look around. He found out that the Clan of the Singing Storm hid deep underneath a cliff by the ocean, in a cavern where the water covered the floor and the sides were covered with cave entrances, some draped in curtains, others doored with wood. He soon discovered that the clan was devoted to science and magic unlike most water clans.
He found a calmness sink into him, he forgot to worry about his appearance and strange clothes, his past children and forgotten mates, it was as if time didn't exist in this ancient, untouched world of stone and water.
After what may have been weeks, months or years, he and Myst felt a call, it was time for them to leave. On his way out, the leader, Silversea, gave them to necklaces that was said to enhance their abilities and sharpen their senses. And with that they left.
