The roar of the Styx as she crashes into the black rocks of Hades is often described by those unlucky enough to pass her opening as an almighty sigh of relief.
Her rushing waters, as black as oil and just as thick, embraces the musty air, breathed only by the dead in a futile attempt to replicate life.
At last she is in her own realm.
She sees herself as the blood that pulses through the Underworld, much like the ichor that runs through the veins of its Lord. She borders this statuary of souls, keeping those that would do it harm out, and those that are inside, inside for good, both protective mother and cruel warden. She allows souls to be carried across her surface, an almost constant stream of faceless spirits. She can feel their hopes and human ambitious slip into her waters as they let go of their past life, but she can also feel their worries, fears, hatred wash away with her violent current. Her waters become heavy with the gloom and anger of mortal lives; a feeling she relishes in as the ores of Charon the ferry man stir up long forgotten anxieties from her riverbed. And yet, despite this almost kind nature she carries a ferocious ire in her heart. Anything that dares to cause havoc in her realm would feel true pain the likes no mortal, nor immortal, has ever felt before. She is a goddess of her word after all.
Her brother scorns her pride. She can hear his waters sizzling as he flows through Tartarus, scoffing at how loud her own waters flow around the Fields of Asphodel. She does not reply, she can sense his unusual anger and understands why his flames bubble with such ferocity. Unlike her brothers she has not been forgotten and unlike her sister she does not slumber.
For she is the river Styx. She grants those worthy with both the blessing and curse of imperfect inviolability. She contains the trillions upon trillions of restless souls whom hunger for the feeling of sunlight on their long decomposed skin. But most of all she holds all beings to their oaths. To feign an oath upon her waters is a foolish act, for both humans and the gods, for nothing can escape her. Even the mighty Zeus, Lord of the sky, King of Olympus and Helios, the life bringing Sun have been punished for making hasty promises, forced to watch loved ones perish by their own unwilling hand. The Styx does not differentiate between mortals and immortals. In her opinion, everyone will travel across her waters eventually.
She finally feels the end of her journey approaching as the sounds of her siblings become louder and the Styx begins to calm. The wailing of the Cocytus eventually drifts off along with the screams of the Acheron as the Five Rivers of Hades converge. The sizzling of the Phlegethon erupts into a choirs of hissing as fire meets with the frozen waters of the Lethe, who's quite murmurs now increase to that of loud chatter. As her waters dilute and her anger begins to dissolve the Styx can be heard sighing once more. For this is the true reason she protects this world so fiercely and this is why she considers it home.
