Exaltation Counselor

The way some dragons talk, you would think that it was ultimately Licorice's decision who remains in the clan and who leaves to serve the Shadowbinder. This is untrue, but any dragon considering exaltation must speak to her before taking any necessary steps. It is her job to ensure that they are really leaving for the right reasons, as Exaltation is a completely permanent process. Any dragons threatening to leave for petty, stupid reasons will have their beliefs and ideas challenged, and will ultimately be convinced to stay. Those who really and truly wish to leave the clan forever to enter a life of servitude to the Shadowbinder, however, are given proper counseling to help them make the adjustment from one stage of their life to the next.

Licorice really is the right dragon for the job. She is a solemn, sincere dragon, and a great listener. Still, she isn't about to sugarcoat things that shouldn't be sugarcoated. She will impress on anyone who comes to her the seriousness of Exaltation, even if it makes her unpopular. For those who are determined, though, she is a figure of great comfort. She also helps to console the family and close friends of an Exalted dragon, reassuring them that they left for valid, personal reasons.

Even though Exaltation is not death, Licorice sees herself as a sort of psychopomp. She guides dragons across the river, so to speak, with one bank being their life as a member of the clan, an the far side being their life as a servant of the Shadowbinder. She takes this role very seriously, and dislikes any sort of interference. Unfortunately, this often includes Redd's insistence on reaping the dues that any Exalt must pay to the clan before leaving. Still, to her way of thinking, if she has done her job properly, then even this unpleasant bit of business should not discourage her charges.
