Biography

AWELA
second-in-command
strict • matronly • patient

→ PERSONALITY
Awela is a notably stubborn dragon, a trait utilized heavily during her stint in the Shrieking Wilds. However, she persists beyond basic determination and finds herself striving to obliterate her goals, rather than simply achieve them. Straightforward success isn't enough; Awela thirsts to transcend ordinary accomplishments by proving successful in all of her endeavors. The reality of her lofty goal is somewhat lacking, for such a deed is not only impossible but entirely ludicrous.

The Wildclaw's dogged character stems from the losses she suffered during her Search. Although her lover and her hatchlings chose to serve the Gladekeeper, the devastation to Awela's heart is as though they perished. She bears the guilt of their loss as though it were a physical weight, a mantle to serve as a constant reminder of a twisted challenge to excel beyond the commonplace. Whether her aim is to assuage her alleged sins or to simply bring herself to distraction, Awela can not say.

And yet, the Wildclaw finds distraction necessary to preserve her sanity; fortunately, there is ample opportunity for diversion within the Clan. Her rigid fortitude makes her an adept tutor and she has molded many a fighter into an indomitable warrior. Additionally, her ceaseless training and perseverance allows her to remain unparalleled in skill, with the exception of two - Obelus and Zeeb. But the excellence of these two, her closest confidants, serves merely to embolden Awela and re-introduce a modicum of kinship in her somewhat tempered existence.

Awela may be loathe to admit it, but the platonic affection of her two male companions isn't the only amity she encounters. History notwithstanding, the Wildclaw still wields the disposition of a well-versed matron. Without thinking, she finds herself utilizing skills only accrued by raising several nests of one's own hatchlings. It's presumably this reason that the Clan's young ones are enthralled with her, no matter how she struggles to avoid them.

→ HISTORY
Born as a Guardian in the Tangled Wood, Awela only had a brief moment to register her parent's faces before she was sent to a clan in the Viridian Labyrinth. This new clan was a fledgling in its own right; a brand new family of dragons establishing their presence in the Everbloom Gardens. Awela's new jungle home provided a stimulating environment for her young mind, keeping her wholly distracted while the clan struggled to thrive.

Their strife was well-hidden at first, but as the cracks grew into fissures, and the fissures into chasms, Clan Vespertine began to fall apart. The sudden, unexplained absence of warriors, previously steadfast and loyal, left the clan defenseless. With only a small group of adults left, it became impossible to find enough food for the hatchlings. Before long, the clan was forced to send them to new homes, to other lairs in the Labyrinth, where they could prosper.

Awela clung to hope that the bedraggled remains of her adoptive family could start anew, but her youthful optimism was crushed one morning when she awoke and the patriarchs of Clan Vespertine were gone. She stayed at the camp for three days, refusing to leave even when the other adults did, until, eventually, a bigger clan encroached on the territory, forcing her to flee. But as the adolescent retreated into the undergrowth, she felt a new sensation come over her, like an invisible, magnetic force that pulled her entire being in one direction. Her Search was finally beginning.

For the next few years, Awela was subjected to whims of that energy, its ebbs and flows dictating every decision she made. It directed her, unceremoniously, deeper into the Viridian Labyrinth, into the region colloquially known as the Gladeveins. Here, Awela fell in love with a Spiral named Cloud and, when tug of the Search was somewhat muted, she laid her first nest, firm in the belief that one of the hatchlings would be her Charge. But when the eggs hatched, the Search resumed command of her attentions, effectively proving her wrong and permanently damaging any faith she had in her own judgement.

As soon as the hatchlings grew into capable adolescents, they were consigned to the service of the Gladekeeper and Awela left her lover without a word. The period that followed this was a dark one. Awela traversed the Viridian Labyrinth, desperate to fill the aching void within her soul. She consummated many one-night stands in an effort to bring her Charge into existence, even though the pull of the Search never ceased. And it was a sucker punch straight to her gut every time an egg hatched and the emptiness was not filled.

And then, when the Guardian came to a place where the foliage began to thicken and the sounds of unseen beasts rent the air, the energy of the Search changed. It began to vibrate with a frenzied urgency and Awela knew instinctively that she would not sleep until her Charge was known to her. She allowed the Shrieking Wilds to swallow her beneath its tenebrous canopy, her claws grappling for purchase as she bolted down the lichen-drowned path.

Awela lost track of time almost instantly. Her excursion could have transpired for mere hours or entire days; Awela could not draw a conclusion. The adrenaline that once flooded her veins was long depleted and her parched tongue languished uselessly betwixt her teeth as she strove to draw oxygen into her deflated lungs. The Search continued to pulse through her frazzled nerves, its frequency increasing with every long-suffering step until, at long-last, a reverberating thrum proclaimed that her Search was over.

Nestled in the twisted roots of an ancient tree was a scroll in immaculate condition, despite the humidity and other stresses of the environment. The parchment was smooth and cream-coloured, and its exterior side was blank. A thin strip of leather, tied into a delicate bow, contained the vellum in a tidy roll. Bewildered, Awela picked up the scroll with careful talons. The moment it was free of its mossy confines, a veritable tidal wave of magic washed over her. Even having been enthralled by the Search for all these years, Awela had never tasted such raw magic before. It was intoxicating. It was bliss. It was ecstasy.

And then - it was pain.

Her maw parted in a mute scream as the magic snapped her bones and began to mold the osseous matter as though it were putty. Her skin bulged and swelled as her organs were rearranged to fit among the new bone and muscle. Awela remained frozen through it all, trapped in the grasp of the spell. Agony was the only thing she knew. Her brain refused to accept what was happening, refused to accept reality, and her psyche fought with tooth and nail against the torturous magic. It felt like a lifetime before her consciousness finally conceded defeat and Awela mercifully blacked out.

When Awela finally came to, the forest around her seemed brighter and more clear, but she chalked up her earlier indifference to detail to the Search. She lifted her head off the lichen-draped ground, feeling disoriented. A sharp hiss escaped her lips as every muscle in her body protested the simple movement and she winced as pain lanced through her muscles. She felt unbalanced and disproportionate, but it wasn't until Awela attempted to stand that she put the pieces together.

Her flesh was not her own. The chassis that she apparently inhabited was unfamiliar and strange, despite possessing colours and markings identical to which she was accustomed. A glance at the roll of parchment - now appearing worn and dirty, but still neatly tied - told Awela all she needed to know: it was a breed-change scroll and she had activated it. A Guardian no more, Awela slowly rose, wobbly as a newborn colt, and stood for the first time as a Wildclaw.

Awela would spend the next several months in the Shrieking Wilds, utilizing the harsh environment to retrain her mind and body to work as a cohesive unit. It was not a simple task; the dark forest was a brutal training ground, but the Wildclaw's physique was stronger and more agile, and its instincts were more finely tuned than the Guardian's. In less than a year's time, Awela honed her talents and transformed herself into a creature that could only be described as formidable.

Clothed in a confidence that had been previously unknown to her, Awela left the Shrieking Wilds - and the Viridian Labyrinth - in her memories, where they belonged. She decided that the neighbouring Sunbeam Ruins would be her new home - a verdict that would change her life one last time.
