Silas doesn't speak of a time before he found Violet. Actually, it's quite rare that he speaks at all. He only makes talk with Violet who he protects with every ounce of himself. No one's been able to speak to him since he arrived. He instead just sits in silence until the cumbersome dragon that approached him decides to leave his presence.
It's not that he's super cruel and annoyed with those who approach him, he just in fact isn't very good at making small talk with others. There's not really much of a point, and he doubts that there would be much to talk about anyway. Violet is perfectly happy filling the silence with her musings, requiring little contribution from Silas. He's completely and perfectly okay with that.
Quite the worrywart, he shadows Violet everywhere she goes, making sure that the journey is always safe before taking part in it. Again, it's not because he assumes that Violet is weak and needs his constant supervision, it's just that it's what he's always done. It's what he did when he found her near lifeless in the brambles of the shadow clan. It's what he did as he nursed her back to health. It's what he will continue to do as she and Aslan prepare to return to their homelands to become the rightful rulers.
Perhaps his devotion has less to do with serving The Queen, and more to do with loving his soulmate.
